h8 being out of the groove

ice cr?m, Monday, 11 July 2011 00:26 (fourteen years ago)

out of the groove as well and it kind of sucks but am taking it easy after a half-marathon ~ 3 wks ago. Kids are out of school for the summer so I basically have to wake at 6 to run these days and I am very, very bad at that. Signed up for another half in September so will get back on the horse over next couple of weeks.

tobo73, Monday, 11 July 2011 01:36 (fourteen years ago)

first 10k i did this year a couple months ago, after spending the winter not running and taking up smoking again, i dropped from 54 minutes to 48 minutes. after spending the intervening two months training regularly and going to a fucking gym for the first time in my life, yesterday's run i dropped from 48 to 47. bahhhhh

thomp, Monday, 11 July 2011 09:13 (fourteen years ago)

I ran an informal training 10K yesterday in 50:26, which was a like a minute and a half faster than I've ever run one in a race. Nice when you can actually see the improvements. I'm getting better of running in my discomfort zone, the pace that I can uncomfortably hold for a sustained amount of time.

Jeff, Wednesday, 13 July 2011 23:15 (fourteen years ago)

set out to run 9 miles today, did maybe 6.5

i lived in my neighborhood over a yr and i still can (and did) get lost like 2 streets away from my house. 1st thing i finally found that i recognized was cuz of too much time on ilx reasons of noticing it once (collier st.) and knowing where it came out

johnny crunch, Thursday, 14 July 2011 02:28 (fourteen years ago)

Running in Hong Kong has been challenging. With mountains, poor air quality, and soul soaking humidity, my pace has suffered greatly. Great views though.

Jeff, Tuesday, 19 July 2011 03:54 (fourteen years ago)

Who's running?

Jeff, Sunday, 31 July 2011 10:48 (fourteen years ago)

ive been running around this lake a bunch, then i jump in, p dope tbqh

ice cr?m, Sunday, 31 July 2011 11:02 (fourteen years ago)

I've been running again over the past couple of months after a long layoff. I abandoned my old route completely (now I run south instead of north), at least for the time being. I still feel pretty good about my running, I was surprised at how quickly I re-adapted to the whole psychology of it, I don't know how to explain it but if you've recently taken time off from running for whatever reason then maybe it makes sense to you. I tweaked my knee again (just like the old days) and have been dealing with that over the past couple of runs.

NoTimeBeforeTime, Sunday, 31 July 2011 11:53 (fourteen years ago)

Just walked in the door from a 6.5 mile run on a steamy DC morning. First time I've done more than 4 in the past month - starting to ramp up again for another half- marathon at end of Sept. Felt pretty good, even in the heat.

tobo73, Sunday, 31 July 2011 14:12 (fourteen years ago)

you are a better man than i. living in the dc area has really zapped my will to run out of doors for the months of may-august.

tehresa, Sunday, 31 July 2011 14:24 (fourteen years ago)

Yes I am much more careful about over-doing it in the bad heat. Just a few years ago it didn't bother me at all. But I knew a dude who keeled over from a heat stroke in the middle of a half-marathon a couple years back. It was only like 85 that day and he was in p good shape. Can't help but think of that when I go out in 90+ heat.

tobo73, Sunday, 31 July 2011 17:29 (fourteen years ago)

I've been running great, no pains. However today I was going to run a practice half marathon, but ended up puking twice in the first 4 miles. I'm going to guess I'm still jet lagged or got sick coming back from Hong Kong. Regardless, it sucked and I'm bummed I didn't get to test how fast I could run a half. I've got the real thing coming up in two weeks.

Jeff, Sunday, 31 July 2011 20:39 (fourteen years ago)

i never thought i'd ever click the running running thread, but today i went for a "run" for the first time in 12 years! i'm a stat nerd with about everything i do, so i started off by just running a mile to establish a baseline (7:45, not as bad as i thought i'd do). then it started pouring rain and i got the fuck out of there. but i think i'll try to keep this up, with the goal of being able to run 4 miles or so at a decent pace.

future events are now current events (Z S), Saturday, 6 August 2011 22:25 (fourteen years ago)

Welcome to your new addiction. Stats are basically the only reason I got into running. I hate running, but I do love a good data set.

Jeff, Saturday, 6 August 2011 22:33 (fourteen years ago)

I hate running

wwwhaaat!?

jed_, Saturday, 6 August 2011 22:43 (fourteen years ago)

anyway, a very positive side effect of my running is that my psoriasis has almost completely disappeared and i think this is the number one factor. psoriasis is basically your body making too much skin and, i think, since i've given my body so much more to do than i have in recent years then that's being kept in check. it's only my theory/rationalisation but i think i'm right.

jed_, Saturday, 6 August 2011 22:46 (fourteen years ago)

so, i tried to find this in the thread above, but there are about 90K posts so...

does anyone know of a good calculator/tool that can recommend goals for distance and/or time? For example, you could enter in your time for a 3 mile run, and it would provide escalating goals for improving that time, or for running farther at the same pace?

i know i could go old school and just come up with the goals myself, but for some reason computer-generated goals are more inspiring to me

future events are now current events (Z S), Sunday, 7 August 2011 16:11 (fourteen years ago)

This is quite good (scroll down to the calculator, it's free, no need to click "Buy DVD" or w/e)

http://www.mcmillanrunning.com/mcmillanrunningcalculator.htm

boxall, Sunday, 7 August 2011 16:13 (fourteen years ago)

thank you!

future events are now current events (Z S), Sunday, 7 August 2011 16:16 (fourteen years ago)

It assumes the "best time" you enter is a race at 100% effort, so the pace it recommends for the majority of your runs is going to be much slower than that.

Also, the equivalent race performances assume you've adjusted your training for the new distance. So if you can run 3 miles in 24 minutes, you ought to be able to run a half-marathon in 1:55 - but obviously you'll have to do longer runs.

boxall, Sunday, 7 August 2011 16:16 (fourteen years ago)

I've yet to live up to mcmillans expectations of me.

Jeff, Sunday, 7 August 2011 16:31 (fourteen years ago)

Yeah, his extrapolations over longer distances are a bit optimistic. The implication he's going for is probably that you need to purchase his online coaching to reach your full potential, which is BS. But it's still a decent calculator I think.

boxall, Sunday, 7 August 2011 17:40 (fourteen years ago)

went on a run today on a track near my house, and this is what the app I was using (Fitnio, basically the first cheap running app I found on the the iPhone app store) showed as my route.

http://i55.tinypic.com/25tuh04.jpgI don't remember losing my mind and running into the street, and then cutting across the baseball field on the following lap, although I suppose it's possible.

Does anyone have any suggestions for an app that's useful on outdoor tracks? Nike+? Something that uses a sensor on the shoe? An old-fashioned stopwatch?

future events are now current events (Z S), Sunday, 7 August 2011 23:20 (fourteen years ago)

Not an app, but http://gmap-pedometer.com/ is an awesome site. To test the accuracy I zoomed all the way in on the (standard 400m) running track in my neighborhood, and it measured it as 401.6m, which is good enough for most anyone I should think.

boxall, Sunday, 7 August 2011 23:34 (fourteen years ago)

lol zs

ice cr?m, Monday, 8 August 2011 01:35 (fourteen years ago)

Yeah Gmap Pedometer is crucial - without it I'd be planning my long runs with an Ordnance Survey map and a piece of string.

naked human pyrami (seandalai), Monday, 8 August 2011 05:23 (fourteen years ago)

ugh after a couple weeks off i am apparently down to 8 and a half minutes per mile, this is basically walking

thomp, Monday, 8 August 2011 08:43 (fourteen years ago)

That's relative.

Jeff, Monday, 8 August 2011 12:43 (fourteen years ago)

On Martha's Vineyard yesterday, perfect conditions: 70 degrees, fog and drizzle. Did 5 miles in abt 7:45 per. That's about as fast as I get.

tobo73, Monday, 8 August 2011 15:20 (fourteen years ago)

so jel

ice cr?m, Monday, 8 August 2011 18:20 (fourteen years ago)

tho i guess ive been running around vermont, p nice too

ice cr?m, Monday, 8 August 2011 18:20 (fourteen years ago)

MVY is a zoo this time of year. Running on the main roads is like playing dodgeball if the balls were chevy suburbans piloted by Massachussetsians. Going out again at 7 this morn to avoid congestion.

Vermont sounds great right now.

tobo73, Tuesday, 9 August 2011 11:07 (fourteen years ago)

Thinking of the Miami Marathon.

Jeff, Tuesday, 9 August 2011 12:03 (fourteen years ago)

That sounds hot and steamy

tobo73, Tuesday, 9 August 2011 13:26 (fourteen years ago)

It's in January, so hopefully not too hot and steamy.

Jeff, Tuesday, 9 August 2011 13:29 (fourteen years ago)

Chicago Rock 'n' Roll Half Marathon yesterday in 1:55:12. Really didn't know how I was going to do since I hadn't run that distance since the Wisconsin marathon. This was only my second half marathon. I ran the same race last year and ended up re-aggravating my injury causing me to walk over half of it finishing in 3:10.

Content with the results. I know I can do better because I felt good the whole run and didn't feel like I was pushing it too much. With consistent training and not being injured I think I can get down to around 1:45.

Jeff, Monday, 15 August 2011 14:57 (fourteen years ago)

ran 7 miles on saturday for the first time in weeks. it was slower than it used to be, but it went well. no struggle. post-run, immediately went to do some shrooms and the body high was really something. reminded me how sore i am normally. easier to ignore while sober.

i have nothing to do today and i want to do as long a run as possible. just waiting for the day to cool down....

jeff, Tuesday, 23 August 2011 17:30 (fourteen years ago)

well done upper case jeff and lower case jeff

i really should get around to signing up for the oxford half marathon

thomp, Tuesday, 23 August 2011 17:39 (fourteen years ago)

wau that's some kinda post run routine you got going there

Aerosol, Tuesday, 23 August 2011 17:49 (fourteen years ago)

Do you take those in a recovery drink? Add protein?

Jeff, Tuesday, 23 August 2011 17:58 (fourteen years ago)

Hmm Oxford half marathon...maybe I should run that. At the moment I'm desperately trying to go from 0% fit to 90% fit in time to run the Dublin Marathon at the end of October.

Can't Stop the Rop (seandalai), Tuesday, 23 August 2011 23:09 (fourteen years ago)

The shrooms thing reminds me of a friend who used to like running while stoned. Can't imagine it! I keep such anal tabs on my own real state.

Did 9 miles today in about i hr 10. was nice, but was very reliant on music for motivation. wu tang.

paulhw, Wednesday, 24 August 2011 00:39 (fourteen years ago)

yeah i should've mixed them in my shake. missed opportunity.

ran a slow 10 today. went ok, but it was just too damn hot.

jeff, Wednesday, 24 August 2011 00:49 (fourteen years ago)

i ran today after a week off for vacation. for the first half mile, i had a pretty decent amount of pain on the insides of both knees. then it went away. anyone have any ideas of what that was?

that is probably a really, really stupid question, but when i mentioned it after our run my gf said that something similar happened to her once and never popped up again. so hoping others know what i'm talking about.

Z S, Wednesday, 24 August 2011 00:54 (fourteen years ago)

My knee pains are random and often pop up after inactivity and don't last so hopefully same for you. My foot pain, sadly, is chronic but I can deal.

Did 4 slow miles this morn on an off day and felt v sluggish. Maybe my bones were feeling the earthquake coming?? Half-marathon in 3 weeks.

tobo73, Wednesday, 24 August 2011 03:18 (fourteen years ago)

Yeah I'm back in the game too. Ran 6 miles on Saturday and had no pain. Ran a v cautious and slow 4 miles on Monday. Easing back into
it. Hopefully that's me done with injury.

LocalGarda, Wednesday, 24 August 2011 06:57 (fourteen years ago)

one of my heels is numb. i'm not into it.

jeff, Saturday, 27 August 2011 00:19 (fourteen years ago)

11 miles last night. Went over 600 miles on my Newtons. They've held up well. At that mileage, they've only cost me 29 cents a mile.

Jeff, Saturday, 27 August 2011 15:36 (fourteen years ago)

12 slow, flat, muggy miles in super-humid DC this morning. My feet hurt but last night I was talking to dude across the alley and learned he makes custom orthotics out of his basement. I get to make my own!
