I do like the new series but I'm also rewatching the early series and David has definitely lost something. The ending of episode 4, with the old Japanese man hurtling towards him, was far too slapstick cheese.

I can tolerate one episode based on the happenings at his dad's retirement home. I do NOT want to see those people become recurring characters.

this is OTM, unfortunately. there's a world of difference between misunderstandings based on a typo (beloved cunt) or accidentally tripping up Shaq and the current humour based on active rudeness. it's much less funny now (i'm talking about season 4 here).

i need to get hold of some of the earlier stuff: i mean, i really like the two episodes i've seen, but i couldn't understand why people were going mental about it. the idea, however, of the situations being less about LD being a bit of an arrogant, blasé chump (which is the impression i have of the character based on what i've seen) and more about him getting into situations through no real fault of his own appeals greatly.

So, does anyone know if episode 5.5 was screened on Sunday?

I've been rewatching the series lately and the end of The Doll (series 2) is unbeatable. Roughest grimmest harshest piece of funny I've ever seen.
― afffectian, Tuesday, 8 November 2005 09:33 (twenty years ago)
you're all being far too harsh on season 4

Won't spoil the ending for anyone who's seen it but does anyone else think it'll be the final series of it? Especially with relation to the drop in viewing figures. VERY surprised to see Sacha Baron Cohen and Dustin Hoffman in the finale just then. David, Gervais and the guys behind Peepshow, they're the greatest guys in TV right now.

"YOU PAID FOR THOSE GIANT FAKE TITTIES!!"
Jeff has incredible timing on those sorts of lines.
Last night's episode did have the feel of a series finale, even if it isn't. In fact, Larry dying or becoming a gentile would have been a cool ending to the series.
