no one does!
― lemon kerrang! (jjjusten), Wednesday, 6 July 2011 23:08 (fourteen years ago)
SSP is pretty cheerless tbh. the post stockyard days have been pretty bad, mainly due to the newest generation of permanent stockyard dudes who dont have anything else they ever thought of doing, other than being racists and meth.

Where I've lived or at least put some form of roots in and my take on them:
46th/Chicago -- Lived here up until grade school. I use it as an excuse to call myself a life-long Minneapolitan even though I don't have too many memories of the neighborhood. My version of The Tree of Life would include a lot of graveyard playtime footage.Burnsville -- Grew up there. A bastion of mediocrity that's recently put a pretty nice bowtie on what used to be the most dead-end portion of town. Hopefully the next generation will develop personalities as a result.Lyn-Lake -- Had a nice year there, but there's little excuse to live here if you're over, say, 25.South St. Paul -- No really, worst fucking year of my life. When cruising up and down Robert Street north of 494 is a highlight, something's gone wrong.Linden Hills -- I lived in the sort of duplex you know all the rest of the houses on the block seethed over, so my take's probably a little warped. Screw it, though. Uptight city.Minnetonka -- A chilling glimpse into how the other half lives, and happily too.Columbia Heights -- Standard dippy "great restaurants" defense.Nokomis -- I guess too unassuming and remote to count. Could be my suburban upbringing that has me quite content here.Nordeast -- My parents and a significant chunk of my friends live here. Would that I gave it more consideration when scouting condos, but they were already a little too expensive by the time I was shopping around. If I lived here, tho, I might actually use my bike instead of never using it.

Soooo accurate. The grim despair and presumed racism of this area was overwhelming.
― ephendophile (Eric H.), Wednesday, 6 July 2011 23:13 (fourteen years ago)
tbh this is the ideal

yeah thx to the music store i am all too acquainted with the weird vibe of ssp. which sucks because there could be a really cool little area thing going on down there, lots of old houses and buildings, this weird secluded old rivertown thing, but youd have to kind of clean sweep the entrenched hardline ssp peeps out first.

theres a lot to love about south mpls! i have a ton of peeps that have ended up there actually - tbf it also depends on what you consider south mpls, because its kinda huge depending on how you define it
― lemon kerrang! (jjjusten), Wednesday, 6 July 2011 23:22 (fourteen years ago)
Yeah, SSP is a small town plopped in the middle of the urban-suburban dividing line. Only it has just the bad things about small towns, not the good things.
― ephendophile (Eric H.), Wednesday, 6 July 2011 23:23 (fourteen years ago)
i consider richfield to be south minneapolis, and also, kenwood.
― goole, Wednesday, 6 July 2011 23:23 (fourteen years ago)
I def live in the most suburban-seeming place of south Minneapolis, but that also means I'm between two really great parks.
― ephendophile (Eric H.), Wednesday, 6 July 2011 23:24 (fourteen years ago)
neighborhoods I have lived in: kenwood

Used to live behind the county detox center at I-94 and Chicago. A buddy of mine visiting got mugged by a guy with a screwdriver on the Chicago overpass.
Had French doors, built-in shelves and cheap rent. Mixed memories.

Places i lived:
St Paul (on Selby near Snelling): alright, removed enough from Mac-Groveland, but I don't remember doing an awful lotPowderhorn: Great food nearby during the day, not very much close by at night, way more of a community feeling than anywhere else, but I did got robbed once.Whittier (near Lyndale and Franklin): pretty awesome, within a block there was a co-op, thrift store, liquor store, open til 1am coffee shop, a couple sketchy bars, and a SuperAmerica that got held up a lot. Also last summer my street flooded in a thunderstorm and everyone was out living it up in thigh-deep water (except for the people whose cars were fucked). Miss that place.

Hey, if you went to Sky Oaks and are around 40, we might have been there together.
A few of my earliest memories (like 2-3 years old) are being with my mom as she lunched with her ERA friends on Robert Street in West St. Paul--at whatever diner had the giant polar bear out front.
I also took the bus on my own to see Sixteen Candles in West St. Paul, having been a Molly Ringwald fan from Facts of Life.
And I played some pinball at the Chuck E. Cheese there. And did karaoke years later at some bar on Robert St. right before it takes a dip.
― bernerrrrr! berrrrrnowwww.... (Eazy), Wednesday, 13 July 2011 17:44 (fourteen years ago)
I went to Vista View and then Gideon Pond, roughly 8 years after you I think. I did have a couple summer school classes (the fun, elementary school version, with classes in sign language and stuff) at Sky Oaks, tho. Weird circle building, right?
