Tipsy -- not a zillion bucks, no. Been twice and enjoyed both. Don't know your tastes, but I've enjoyed a lot of the early plates (little fried meatballs are fun, and there's a variety of high-quality parmesans, balsamics, and prosciuttos that are a treat to savor one flavor at a time); pretty good pastas in that $16-$20 range that could get you crap pasta somewhere else; and ... actually, entree-wise, I've only had their grilled baby octopus, which is straightforwardly tasty.

I can't think of much about the place that'd be bothersome or disappointing: prices aren't bad and food's solid. (Though it's no Smith's, down MacDougal.)

nabisco, Wednesday, 17 December 2008 22:54 (fifteen years ago) link

this is somehow even worse that the blockbuster horror move the ruins. or, more topically, the pizza options available in tribeca

hey did anyone here ever get more 411 about char 4 re: foods

the schef (adam schefter ha ha), Wednesday, 17 December 2008 22:56 (fifteen years ago) link

"treat to savor one flavor at a time" -- that sounds like Gene Shalit doing restaurants or something, sorry; I just mean tasting those particularly good things almost individually and finding yourself saying, e.g., "okay, now that's a delicious vinegar." I could happily sit at the bar there just eating Reggiano and balsamic on bread.

nabisco, Wednesday, 17 December 2008 22:56 (fifteen years ago) link

theres a store in la, in los feliz, that does some srs shit w/ balsamic, $40 .5 liter bottles, im sure nyc has a similar store, but my point is just that good balsamic vinegar is l.e.g.i.t. and if i was rich i would never buy anything else

beyonc'e (max), Wednesday, 17 December 2008 22:58 (fifteen years ago) link

wait -- you are not rich??

had brunch here and it was good but not special. the bacon was certainly really tasty and not surprisingly the high point although i think the do a fig jam that is supposed to be good. a little $$ but not bad value

thx nabisco. sounds like what we're looking for. plus i've heard the wines are good.

so no. 7 has become a fast fixture. i also just tried the bar menu. the fry plate is great (i dunno if i already said that). you get a LOT of fries -- they're like really crispy. like chips. really good balsamic mayo.

also i can't get enough of that fried broccoli. i wanna sit at the bar tomorrow and just have one of those with a glass of wine. yum.

Surmounter, Friday, 26 December 2008 06:27 (fifteen years ago) link

i guess i should probably try this at some point.

where should I have lunch tomorrow on LSE/Soho, Vic and I are having our Aidan-free day , we have dinner sorted (Irving Mill) and are booked for touristy goodness up the rockefeller at 4 for the sunrise photo opps, but I'm stuck for eating (other than sampling some lab di gelato wares). Any not too pricey, relaxed ideas?

it's called "weather up" and they have $11 cocktails apparently.

― bell_labs, Friday, 28 March 2008 17:43 (9 months ago)

this place is kind of full of shit

Surmounter, Sunday, 4 January 2009 01:14 (fifteen years ago) link

they have these beautiful little cocktail glasses for some of the $11+ drinks, that can hold a shot

Surmounter, Sunday, 4 January 2009 01:47 (fifteen years ago) link

one shot.

Surmounter, Sunday, 4 January 2009 01:47 (fifteen years ago) link

Lol surmo no offense but if you're paying $11 for a cocktail you're basically asking to get ripped off btw I've been to little branch etc more than once he point being if you're looking for bang for your buck go to applebees and get a long island ice tea

8====D ------ ㋡ (max), Sunday, 4 January 2009 01:51 (fifteen years ago) link

you're right, i know you're right. it's just the place has AIRS man yknow?

omg i did go to that applebees recently, i been wanting to go for like years.

Surmounter, Sunday, 4 January 2009 01:52 (fifteen years ago) link

weather up is one of the worst bars in a neigborhood with no shortage of crappy bars.

ian, Sunday, 4 January 2009 02:04 (fifteen years ago) link

i went there once

dmr, Sunday, 4 January 2009 06:01 (fifteen years ago) link

i dont really want to get pulled into defending the place since i have no real allegiance for it but it didnt seem like such a terrible place to me, it just has a 'steez' and i guess if u dislike the 'steez' youd probably hate it but... why would you go to such a bar in the first place.

8====D ------ ㋡ (max), Sunday, 4 January 2009 13:14 (fifteen years ago) link

2) Prospect Heights: It's so nice when proprietors do the work for us: "I wanted to "tip" you guys off on a new place in Prospect Heights, Brooklyn. Its called Cornelius and is the collaboration of the folks from Franklin Park, Soda and Le Gamin. The focus is many, many, many whiskeys, bourbons and vodkas and I'm serving up some American comfort small plates. We are opening Monday, January 12th. Please come check it out. Cornelius is at 565 Vanderbilt Ave. at Pacific St." Nice presentation and approach for Brooklyn, go early and brace for crowds. [POST-PLYWOOD]

I ate at Bellavitea last week and kinda wondered how Tipsy wound up liking it.

Re: expensive cocktails I'm tempted to say it's something you're best off going all in on -- e.g., if you want to have a fancy-cocktail night, go to one of the first-wave places with $20 drinks and enjoy them and don't worry about it,* because I get the feeling any place jumping on the trend and serving tiny $10 fancy cocktails is going to be a bust, in addition to making you stand at the bar watching drinks get mixed exactly twice as often.

(* If this is really difficult, maybe the trick is to have beans for dinner at home and just figure the hundred you dropped on fancy interesting drinks everyone loved and discussed might even cost slightly less than what you'd spend on a nice restaurant and five regular-priced drinks.)

nabisco, Wednesday, 7 January 2009 23:02 (fifteen years ago) link

okay I don't think how one feels about Weather Up has anything to do with liking expensive cocktails or not. I am one of the primo cocktail snobs on ILX and I love the hell out of snooty cocktail bars but I called that place out for being shit on this thread months ago.
