AWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWW

x-post

We were happy cause we were in fucking Mexico. lol.

Yeah it's just the same hair same glasses etc. that freaks me out. I was a really young 14 year old though and didn't really start doing my own thing for like another year after this. I just didn't realize quite how much of a clone I was until I found this a couple weeks ago.

i think given her druthers my mom would have dressed me just like her, too. she would always suggest i buy stuff she would wear when we went shopping. i don't think it was sinister, just a lack of imagination.

horseshoe, Thursday, 30 June 2011 00:50 (fourteen years ago)

Yeah see I think her mini-me from from birth to 15 sort of made me go off the deep end which is how I wound up with purple hair and dressed in head to toe thrifted polyester stuff a year later. Also NAVGL but in a diff way entirely.

Also why were those glasses so big?! I blam Sally Jesse.

iirc ernest hemingway's mom made him dress like her

☂ (max), Thursday, 30 June 2011 00:55 (fourteen years ago)

my mom's collection of Ferragamos and Balenciaga in the 80s would have made me one very faggoty looking little boy. i liked wearing tight Superman shirts and sleeveless things with words like POW on them, at least until i was 9 or 10.

i had no idea about this btw!

horseshoe, Thursday, 30 June 2011 01:01 (fourteen years ago)

well i dunno if she made him dress like her but i though it was common knowldge/possible urban legend that hemingways mom used to dress him in girls clothes till he was 10! it is one of those things you say and nod knowingly as if it explains a lot about hemingway. which, well, it maybe does.

BIG HOOS aka the steendriver, Thursday, 30 June 2011 01:04 (fourteen years ago)

i just looked it up on the internet and apparently the most recent critical take is that she didn't so much dress him up like a girl as she dressed him and his sister up like androgynous Dutch dolls. idk if that's supposed to be better or worse.

xxp

horseshoe, Thursday, 30 June 2011 01:05 (fourteen years ago)

apparently he hated her, in any event, not the most surprising information i've ever acquired.

horseshoe, Thursday, 30 June 2011 01:06 (fourteen years ago)

no, but this is obviously a contrarian reading flying in the face of the conventional wisdom that she did indeed dress him like a girl

xp lol you do have dicaprio eyes in that picture jho

horseshoe, Thursday, 30 June 2011 01:07 (fourteen years ago)

:/ whats up with tinypic

flopson, Wednesday, 16 November 2011 16:49 (fourteen years ago)

IIRC back in the 19th century, probably in the early 20th century too, it was pretty common to dress both little girls and little boys in frilly clothes that may look "girlish" to someone living today. The idea that boys should dress "masculine" and totally different from girls right from the start wasn't around yet. So I don't know if Hemingway's and his sister's clothes were that different from the standards of the era.

Tuomas, Friday, 18 November 2011 13:59 (fourteen years ago)

Here's a picture of my grandfather from about 1912, to my eye dressed no different from his sisters.
