don't think I've ever been there
― british sb power (dayo), Tuesday, 21 June 2011 14:37 (fourteen years ago)
Good luck with the moves, guys.
Yeah, Telephone, to chime in with Stevie, there are not really any for-real grocery stores in Fishtown proper at this point, so that is a little weird. But depending on your transportation situation and different inclinations, maybe that is not a big deal. Many folks loooove living there. There is a store just over the border in Port Richmond, plus a huge Pathmark in NoLibs that may or may not open any day now. Plus there are a couple of little markets scattered about. Anyway, yeah good luck. I guess follow your instincts, go with a part of town that seems a good fit to you or that you feel comfortable in

god I had forgotten all about the philadelphia/jersey accent
― dayo, Thursday, 23 June 2011 15:03 (fourteen years ago)
I have a super strong Philly accent, actually.
― Mordy, Thursday, 23 June 2011 15:06 (fourteen years ago)
haha I'll have to talk to you in real life some day!
think my least favorite accent is the neast accent
― dayo, Thursday, 23 June 2011 15:09 (fourteen years ago)
I thought I had a Jersey/Philly accent bcz lady at the Starbucks on Broad & Pine asked me if my Starbucks card was an international "because of my accent", and a week later some guy asked me if I was Irish (also because of my "accent").
― brie on crüt (Stevie D(eux)), Thursday, 23 June 2011 15:16 (fourteen years ago)
UNTIL the lady @ Starbucks, rather
also "was an international ONE 'because of my accent'"
maybe I should just repost that
i used to get made fun of in high school (when I was living in Pittsburgh) because I'd pronounce "home" like "h-OE-me"
― Mordy, Thursday, 23 June 2011 15:17 (fourteen years ago)
...as opposed to?
The worst is "beggle" for bagel, IMO. Also, that tendancy to pronounce long-O with a slight "ew" sound ("prewvolewne")
― brie on crüt (Stevie D(eux)), Thursday, 23 June 2011 15:18 (fourteen years ago)
I'd have to record it really for you to hear the difference I think. It's very pronounced (punlol) tho. I pronounce most Jewish words (like bagel) w/ a normative Ashkenazi pronunciation tho.

FYI John Talabot is DJing at Snacks tomorrow (which is, as always, free and also goes til 3:30 and has free hot dogs and veggie dogs) and PLAID is playing at Johnny Brenda's on Sunday for $13

Notable things:
Pork soy sauce noodles at Nan Zhou hand drawn noodle joint at 9th and Race is like crack and also only $5, what the fuck?
International House has film screenings of some Kuchar shorts, a David Berhman documentary, and Los Angeles Plays Itself, as well as a ton of performances and screenings as part of their Sonic Arts Union retrospective
10th St bike lane kinda blows a lot
Santucci's at 10th and Christian has what I believe to be the pizza in city limits. Also, garlic bread cheesesteak. And CityPaper ranked their Uncle Something's stromboli as the best meal of 2011

I've had this nagging feeling for years that I should have moved to philly while still young, and somehow I will wind up finally doing it when I'm like 37 and not like it.
― Oh shit, that's my bone! (Hurting 2), Wednesday, 4 January 2012 18:14 (fourteen years ago)
well it will probably be safer
― iatee, Wednesday, 4 January 2012 18:15 (fourteen years ago)
I did it at 28 (not for Philly specifically, just to get the fuck out of new jersey, which was itself the result of "get the fuck put of Alabama"), just in time to start feeling awkward and old at the few shows I have any time to go to in between 9-hour days at my horrible fucking job. PROGRESS!

Or um I guess come to Cinematheque at L'Etage, we show movies and such, hooray
― muus lääv? :D muus dut :( (Telephone thing), Wednesday, 4 January 2012 20:46 (fourteen years ago)
xpost yeah sort of like that. I've had a group of friends there very much involved in a scene of sorts and making shit happen for a long time - shows, massive dance parties, art events, etc. Already a lot of them are drifting out of it, having families, and the ones who are still doing it are hanging with younger people than themselves.
Of course if I eventually move to a phily firm I can probably live the good life on my eventual salary, buy a nice victorian with a garden in the university area, send my kids to public school with all the profs' kids, get season tickets to the orchestra, etc.

― Mordy, Wednesday, 4 January 2012 21:19 (fourteen years ago)
Ya we need a Philly FAP for real. xps is L'Etage the one at 6th and Bainbridge? Bcz that's like 2 blocks away from my job. What is this cinema thing???

http://cinemathequeip.com/ - international film screening/discussion series. I accidentally ended up on the staff, mostly because I showed up regularly and occasionally spoke up afterwards.
My involvement is pretty minimal; I'm doing short essays for the site on Veronika Voss, Persona and Valerie and Her Week of Wonders in a few months.
― muus lääv? :D muus dut :( (Telephone thing), Thursday, 5 January 2012 00:28 (fourteen years ago)
what time do the movies show?
― Mordy, Thursday, 5 January 2012 00:34 (fourteen years ago)
7:00, twice monthly, alternating Sunday and Wednesday.
― muus lääv? :D muus dut :( (Telephone thing), Thursday, 5 January 2012 00:36 (fourteen years ago)
it'll be tricky for us to ever come since that's a deadzone in our evening, before baby is asleep but close to bedtime. maybe later in the year tho
― Mordy, Thursday, 5 January 2012 00:40 (fourteen years ago)
I still hate it here so much, like i got back from visiting family the other day and immediately felt the crush.
― dell (del), Thursday, 5 January 2012 00:51 (fourteen years ago)
Oh man I am so coming to a bunch of these. How does one qualify as "artist"?
― Sally Field hysterically shrieking "Gloria fucking SWANSON!!!" (Stevie D(eux)), Thursday, 5 January 2012 02:08 (fourteen years ago)
I had a horrible time in Philly the last time I was there (gastric anguish), but hey the baseball convention is there summer 2013.
― Dr Morbois de Bologne (Dr Morbius), Thursday, 5 January 2012 03:10 (fourteen years ago)
I think they ask for a sample or a website? You might be able to get the student rate...
― muus lääv? :D muus dut :( (Telephone thing), Thursday, 5 January 2012 03:41 (fourteen years ago)
I mean I am not technically a student but I do have an (expired) ID and also I only make like $800/month :-(
― Sally Field hysterically shrieking "Gloria fucking SWANSON!!!" (Stevie D(eux)), Thursday, 5 January 2012 03:50 (fourteen years ago)

― dell (del), Thursday, 5 January 2012 04:15 (fourteen years ago)
Okay, so: if anyone made it to tonight's screening of Tsotsi, please accept my apologies. God, that was like watching the South African version of Crash.

jealous that chicagilxors have such vibrant threads and there's like - just 3 of us here. anyway, I'm thinking about going to this on Sunday:
http://www.germantownjewishcentre.org/Sitewide/Events_Calendar/Not_JUST_Your_Grandmother_s_Yiddish_Concert!/
description:
An Intergenerational Event for All Ages: Featuring folk songs both old and new, theatrical gems from Second Avenue shows, Purim and Peysakh too!
― Mordy, Tuesday, 13 March 2012 03:10 (fourteen years ago)
I need a better idea of what stuff is happening in the city btw. We unexpectedly had a wide open free Sunday this last week and had no idea what to do. I couldn't google any cool events in the city (though I'm sure it was my googling skills that were deficient) and we ended up just strolling in Manayunk
― Mordy, Tuesday, 13 March 2012 03:12 (fourteen years ago)
