i find the same for bulleit. (not the rye)

I love Bulleit in anything, but I've never been sure how objective I am about its versatility - probably one of my five favorite spirits. Well. Five favorite I can afford. The Charbay hopped whiskeys are mindblowing and I would drink them every day, but I'm never going to be able to afford to replace my review samples.

Yep, it's excellent. One of the best things Cooley is making at the moment.

There's been a great sale on there recently - a third off a lot of malts (Cardhu, Dalwhinnie, etc).

Very impressed with the Macallan Fine Oak 10 y/o that I just finished off.

I like to keep my old bottles after I finish the whisk(e)y, for display & memory purposes, but should I definitely be washing the bottles out or can I leave them?

I've been washing them thus far, but was wondering if I could leave them in order to maintain the slight smell of the whisk(e)y... Would this be a bad idea?

Won't hurt to leave them unwashed.

My mum is heading to Chicago & Vancouver & environs in a few weeks & I am going to push her to try and pick me up some american whiskey once again...

I'd love George T Stagg or something relatively high-end in the bourbon or rye department that's a hell of a lot cheaper in the states if possible (from my understanding such things are roughly half the UK price if you can find them). I will have to get the low-down on her itinerary...

I'm used to spending £20-£30 for my single malts & ALL american whiskey is £20+ here, so I'd be willing to spend up to $60 or so (and possibly more for something worth it), to give you a price ballpark for ideas. Thanks!

Have you tried any of the higher-end Buffalo Trace bourbons? From my limited experience, they're superb. I don't think they're all that expensive either.

that e.h. taylor i just posted about is 75--it's a one of a kind bottling from an experimental batch they did. they also have the jefferson's 17/18 year which are 80 and one of your last chances to get some stitzel-weller bourbon.

for rye they have rendezvous for 55 and it's a good one.

I think I might be able to persuade her to give up a couple of hours to visit a specific shop within the city centre in Chicago if I gave directions, instructions on what to look or ask for & some money beforehand...

at Trader Joe's in California you can buy a bottle of Laphroaig (the 10-year) for $28. Incredible. Here on the East Coast it's like $60. If I lived there I'd drink Laphroaig all the time

We have hard liquor in all kinds of stores here but TJ doesn't sell it! I would assume their distribution chain does go this far.

yeah--the weird thing is, single malt scotch is cheaper in California than it is in Scotland, where it's made

i know it's heavily taxed in Scotland, but the economics of scotch don't make any sense to me

how cheaply can you get lagavulin

Lagavulin here on the East Coast is about $80 a bottle, last I checked.

The great thing about having a steady cash flow is that you can afford vices like that, if you pick and choose a few. The problem is that you have to pick them wisely, or you end up lusting after even more expensive scotch.

i got a few bottles of lagavulin for £30 a while ago

$60 is £40ish iirc which is a more usual price

it's a great whisky but not something you'd want to drink too often, i thought the same about laphroaig but i think lagavulin's iodiney/medicinal taste is yet more so

spent last night sampling maker's mark, knob creek,?woodford? reserve and jack daniels single barrel at a kinda posh bar

I've ordered a bottle of Knob Creek Single Barrel from Binny's, which my very kind mother will pick up next week and bring back to the UK for me in a few weeks.

I initially ordered one of the Binny's own KC Single Barrels, but they're all sold out. I decided to go with the KC as I know I already love the standard Small Batch version, so, what with the positive word on it so far, I'm certain I'm going to love the Single Barrel, especially with its extra 120 proof kick! Very cheap as well for a UK-er.

anyone ever try the low budget single malts at trader joe's? (i guess this is a cali thing only?)

the speyburn "bradan orach" is pretty good at $14.99(!). light and smooth, B+

the lismore single malt is OK, some dispute if this is even a real single malt. it's a little harsh and metallic, not as good of a deal either at $16.99 B-

finlaggan is truly wretched, i mean i'm not really into islay but this tastes like lavoris. can't remember the price, probably $16.99 D- (good for pranking your guests i suppose)

was super regular on the Lagavalin for a long time & it got to be regular which was weird. Enjoying it again after some time away.
