Hey, YOU wanted to move here.

I moved here for the FREEDOM TO CHOOSE.

Or was it burritos and Amoeba?

Nordicskillz (Nordicskillz), Wednesday, 9 July 2003 21:31 (twenty-two years ago)

A friend murdered me w/ Peja in NBA Street vol. 2, so I veto that.

Leee (Leee), Wednesday, 9 July 2003 21:32 (twenty-two years ago)

A friend hooked up with Peja! He took her to his house and said in his creepy accent, "Would you like to lay down with me?"

Yanc3y (ystrickler), Wednesday, 9 July 2003 21:35 (twenty-two years ago)

nickn - it's definitely Elyse I'm thinking of -

Then Robin strikes! She and Shannon are reading from the Good Book and get to Psalm 14: "The fool has said in his heart there is no God." Having learned that Elyse is atheist, Robin charmingly calls her over to the table. We hear Shannon say "Oh God," because this is going to be trouble. Shannon is very religious but she's certainly not pressing her views on anyone. Robin, however, has no such control and asks Elyse to read this verse. Elyse is totally offended by the second punch Robin throws her way when she says, "It made me think of you."

So Adrianne won?

jaymc (jaymc), Wednesday, 9 July 2003 21:36 (twenty-two years ago)

How the hell did Nicole get to the final 9 - she is hideous?!

N. (nickdastoor), Wednesday, 9 July 2003 21:37 (twenty-two years ago)

Whateva girl won, she was well well fit.

She was on Regis and Kathy Lee this morning!

Nordicskillz (Nordicskillz), Wednesday, 9 July 2003 21:44 (twenty-two years ago)

Ain't it great?

Ned Raggett (Ned), Wednesday, 9 July 2003 21:45 (twenty-two years ago)

She is a man called Gary Busey?

Damn caching of pages!

nickn (nickn), Wednesday, 9 July 2003 21:48 (twenty-two years ago)

That interview makes me love her even more.

Leee (Leee), Wednesday, 9 July 2003 21:54 (twenty-two years ago)

Also of amusement was when the producers in post-production would let Tyra re-dub her speeches to the girls -- the change in sound quality stuck out like a ham sandwich in Elsyse's stomach -- good for laffs!

The Milkmaid (of Human Kindness) (The Milkmaid), Thursday, 22 September 2005 14:53 (twenty years ago)

What, no one cares about Season 5? The girls aren't really all that good looking this time around anyway.

The Milkmaid (of Human Kindness) (The Milkmaid), Thursday, 22 September 2005 16:18 (twenty years ago)

Wait, Elyse and Marty aren't together anymore? Why am I the last to hear of this?

jaymc (jaymc), Thursday, 22 September 2005 16:24 (twenty years ago)

Don't you read Elyse's blog?

The Milkmaid (of Human Kindness) (The Milkmaid), Thursday, 22 September 2005 16:28 (twenty years ago)

okay, I just read that old interview with Elyse and she seriously is the greatest person ever to be on the show.

The Ghost of Black Elegance (Dan Perry), Thursday, 22 September 2005 16:35 (twenty years ago)

Yeah, the contestants this time are quite dull -- although there's some potential for catfighting as well as a beautiful, boyish lesbian.

The Milkmaid (of Human Kindness) (The Milkmaid), Thursday, 22 September 2005 16:45 (twenty years ago)

I keep up with Elyse's blog very irregularly.

jaymc (jaymc), Thursday, 22 September 2005 16:46 (twenty years ago)

as well as a beautiful, boyish lesbian

Oh really?

jaymc (jaymc), Thursday, 22 September 2005 16:47 (twenty years ago)

You should peep Kim in the new lineup. She's just your type, but she doesn't like boys.

The Milkmaid (of Human Kindness) (The Milkmaid), Thursday, 22 September 2005 16:47 (twenty years ago)

One step ahead of you, A.

jaymc (jaymc), Thursday, 22 September 2005 16:51 (twenty years ago)

Yowza.

http://wwwimage.upn.com/shows/top_model5/images/models/bio_pic_kim.jpg

jaymc (jaymc), Thursday, 22 September 2005 16:52 (twenty years ago)

Haha, her favorite magazines are: Us Weekly, The Economist, Star, and Vogue.

jaymc (jaymc), Thursday, 22 September 2005 16:53 (twenty years ago)

She has a really mannish gait, but she's purrrrrrrty. I hope she doesn't get cut.

The Milkmaid (of Human Kindness) (The Milkmaid), Thursday, 22 September 2005 16:53 (twenty years ago)

(Didn't Elyse list New England Journal of Medicine as one of her favorite magazines?)

jaymc (jaymc), Thursday, 22 September 2005 16:54 (twenty years ago)

She was planning on going to medical school, wasn't she? In fact, she had that entire eugenic argument about what made for a good model that completely creeped out the judges! So awesome.

The Ghost of Black Elegance (Dan Perry), Thursday, 22 September 2005 16:56 (twenty years ago)

Yeah, she's great. Hey, are lesbians common on this show? There was Ebony on Season 1. Any others? I haven't paid attention to the last few cycles.

jaymc (jaymc), Thursday, 22 September 2005 16:59 (twenty years ago)

I watched one and two, but the last two have been sort of a blur. I don't really remember a lot of lesbians.

The Milkmaid (of Human Kindness) (The Milkmaid), Thursday, 22 September 2005 17:02 (twenty years ago)

Allegedley, Eva from season 3.
Michelle from season 4.

The Ghost of Black Elegance (Dan Perry), Thursday, 22 September 2005 17:03 (twenty years ago)

none of them are as adorable as kim. she and her girlfriend have an "open relationship" for the time being too...

The Milkmaid (of Human Kindness) (The Milkmaid), Thursday, 22 September 2005 17:05 (twenty years ago)

is last night's episode on bittorrent anywhere? i missed it.

La Monte (La Monte), Thursday, 22 September 2005 22:34 (twenty years ago)

Kim is such a cutie!

Mary (Mary), Thursday, 22 September 2005 22:51 (twenty years ago)

I remember as way annoying from college. I wonder if she and her friends are still snorting ritalin for fun.

Candicissima (candicissima), Thursday, 22 September 2005 23:46 (twenty years ago)

Jayla and Nicole are the hottest, but I think I'll root for Kyle since her day job is being a Dairy Queen manager. That's just awesome.

milozauckerman (miloaukerman), Friday, 23 September 2005 00:35 (twenty years ago)

I don't know why I wasn't hyping Kim on this thread, though I had on my blog. But now that she has turned out to be really quite tiresome (grating voice, a certain hyperactiveness which I bet is her covering up for her utter fear of being around these catty hoes/being a girly girl), I credit that oversight to my burgeoning prescience.

I hate Twiggy. Way too middle-aged proper Brit.

Lisa is hot. She will be top three.

Leeeeeeeee (Leee), Friday, 23 September 2005 04:40 (twenty years ago)

i definitely think Kim should win. for sure the most stunning and most model looking. as usual the other ones look like UPN catalog models

breezy, Friday, 23 September 2005 05:24 (twenty years ago)

Awww, guess who got it twisted and thought she could be a model...

I'm not upset to see her go. I thought she was a nice person, but average looking at best. Also, Cassandra can suck it with her Roxette hair. She's SO MOD. Anyone else see it?

The Milkmaid (of Human Kindness) (The Milkmaid), Wednesday, 5 October 2005 13:59 (twenty years ago)

I watched the beginning of it last night, the only attractive one was the lesbian.

n/a (Nick A.), Wednesday, 5 October 2005 14:01 (twenty years ago)

Yeah, they're not most stunning group -- Kyle looks way better with brown hair though. And the man looks less mannish.

The Milkmaid (of Human Kindness) (The Milkmaid), Wednesday, 5 October 2005 14:02 (twenty years ago)

I saw it!

I thought Ebony was gorgeous but didn't know what she was doing. Right now it's a three-way race between Kim (YAY), Lisa (boo) and... Cassandra (BOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO). Nicole (?) and Nik (YAY) are the dark horses.

The Ghost of Black Elegance (Dan Perry), Wednesday, 5 October 2005 14:02 (twenty years ago)

met kahlen from cycle 4 last night (not that i recognized her; it's kinda how she introduced herself). she was talking shit about tyra, which was hilarious. she also mentioned that every year, she sends tyra a christmas card full of dolphin stickers, since tyra is apparently scared to death of dolphins.

surm, Tuesday, 6 December 2016 18:41 (nine years ago)

still love Adrianne xxx

surm, Tuesday, 6 December 2016 18:48 (nine years ago)

some all-time favourite moments:

Jade's "wonderful, fabulous" Covergirl advert
everyone in Season 10 struggling with the Covergirl advert in a foreign language
Alexandria vs Brittani and Tyra's "I don't want you here but I'm outnumbered so whatever" speech
the autocue challenge that led to Tyra yelling at Tiffany
Cassie refusing a second haircut despite having already had most of it hacked off
Kahlen's grave photoshoot and Keenyah being given "gluttony" as a theme
"what is your name?" "naime" "your name?"
Dionne - "what the fuck is on my baby's head?"
"I just want to let you know that some people have war in their countries"
Angelea, doing anything

this show was the greatest before All Stars. The show doesn't need men, or gimmick themes, or a new host in Rita Ora: it needs to go back to the basics. Find a dozen young pretty women willing to argue on camera for producers, and let them find increasingly creative ways to humiliate them through the medium of photography.

also agreed with a big fat NO to anyone but Tyra hosting

surm, Monday, 12 December 2016 20:17 (nine years ago)

wait Rita Ora is the new host? how many different ways are they going to try to make her into A Thing?

¶ (DJP), Monday, 12 December 2016 20:19 (nine years ago)

RIGHT

surm, Monday, 12 December 2016 20:21 (nine years ago)

My wife and I watched this last night. They set up a bunch of obvious callback-to-previous-cycles drama (combative trans woman insulting everyone around her, two cast members fall in love) and then promptly didn't put the people fueling it into the top 14, which was kind of hilarious. Also hilarious was Tyra showing up to give a "you must be a brand, like ME" pep talk and then ending it with "my brand is so fly now that I don't even have to be here so PEACE" and Rita Ora acting like she is a household name.

They did get Ashley Stewart on the judging panel, which is cool. Also, all 14 of the finalists actually look like models this cycle, which may be the first time in the show's history.

¶ (DJP), Tuesday, 13 December 2016 19:53 (nine years ago)

one month passes...

Ashley Graham is so likeable and fun and seems to be able to offer useful, constructive, critiques. Rita Ora is a mix of useless and irritating: her brand seems to be "I am famous because it was decided I should be famous" and her dilletantism is so apparent. She can't even deliver a NotTyraMail without reading it from a cue card.

The highlight of this season so far is Marissa pouring milk down her couture dress in the name of avant-garde fashion. The constant fighting is so boring and predictable, even if the inferred idea that Courtney threw herself down the stairs was hilarious. I will be shocked if Courtney, Cody and Tatiana aren't the final trio.

boxedjoy, Thursday, 19 January 2017 23:04 (nine years ago)

one year passes...

so the new season has aired a few episodes and it is DEFINITELY a return to form - and by form, I mean, unnecessarily cruel and hilariously so. We've had a girl with alopecia be given a makeover which consisted of binning her wigs. We've had a Trump voter given a terrible dye job - "you voted red, so you get red." We've had a girl quit because she thinks the other girls are sociopaths engaging in deep psychological warfare (her words!) because... they stayed up at night and then wouldn't let her skip the queue for the shower. The photoshoot themes have included one with a prosthetic baby bump where the girls had to fiercely glow.

boxedjoy, Saturday, 3 February 2018 10:36 (eight years ago)

also in a similar vein I can't recommend "Making A Model With Yolanda Hadid" enough. It's basically ANTM for 13-15 year olds, helmed by Bella and Gigi's mother, and the contestants have their own mothers stay with them too. Highlights so far have included Yolanda actively causing confrontation at every possible moment, a girl crying on a gymnastic set being told "it hurts? well... that's fashion", and a mother asking if anyone would like to be her surrogate at some point.

our beloved RIFF LORD (DJP), Tuesday, 27 January 2026 17:24 (four months ago)

"you wanted more" yes I definitely did want multiple episodes of race-switching photoshoots

Jokes aside, I'm not really sure how I feel about this historical critique of the show that seems to have sprung up in the past few years. When you apply to be on a reality show - any reality show, and especially something like this after the first few seasons - you cannot be naive enough to think they're not going to try to manipulate and humiliate you for entertainment purposes. The payoff is that you get the fame, the recognition - and in this show's case - the modelling work, even if it's not quite the cover of American Vogue or whatever.

I don't think that cosplaying racial stereotypes was ever acceptable even with Tyra's "I just want to show all races are beautiful!" angle. And there's some really uncomfortable moments in the early seasons where e.g Jaeda and Keenyah are subject to some very innappropriate behaviour from male models that should have been handled differently. But giving them absurd challenges that feel difficult doesn't seem unfair when you consider how the fashion industry, and modelling in particular, is so cut-throat and ruthless.

The best bits of this show didn't involve outlandish stunts though. They involved ridiculous people being given enough space to be themselves. Cycle 6 gave us Jade and Furonda, Cycle 8 gave us Natasha, Renee, Jael, Dionne, Brittani and Kathleen, Cycle 16 gave us Alexandria and Brittani. I can hardly remember the photoshoots but "I just wanna let you know, some people have war in their countries" lives in my head rent-free still.

This show remains my problematic fave, basically.

boxedjoy, Wednesday, 28 January 2026 20:23 (four months ago)

looking forward to the doc!

idk i cannot get enough of behind the scenes dirt now that the show is in our rear view mirror. however bonkers it seemed at the time, it feels like the truth was worse bc Tyra is NUTS

those contestants truly went thru it in ways that were deeply fucked for TV let alone fashion and i am here for everyone knowing that

werewolves of laudanum (VegemiteGrrl), Thursday, 29 January 2026 00:49 (four months ago)

two weeks pass...

the Shandi stuff in the documentary was exceptionally grim.

Mr Jay came across as particuarly disingenuous, and the narrative changed to suit his needs a lot. "I wanted to leave" but then stayed for another nine cycles.

Miss Jay broke my heart but it was great to see those facial expressions tell a full story at the end.
