it's worth going through the siracusa reviews chronologically btw, or at least be sure to read 10.2-10.4. as the os has become more mature the reviews have become more about specific new features rather than "architecture"

caek, Monday, 13 June 2011 13:36 (fifteen years ago)

yeah, maybe i should just read a bunch of those. (i haven't read any of them yet. i just read the first of his three part series on "avoiding copeland 2010" and need to read the other two now)

Plus, if you start at the beginning you get fun info on Rosetta and the other possibilities that were planned.

mh, Monday, 13 June 2011 14:26 (fifteen years ago)

good point -- i don't even know what that is

and what is Darwin

mh, Monday, 13 June 2011 19:03 (fifteen years ago)

the tl;dr version is that it's the core kernel and system tools and it's BSD-derived

Also decent reading for background: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/NeXTSTEP

In the late 90s I wanted a NeXT machine really badly, as they were being phased out and you could get them for a reasonable price.

NeXTSTEP was around 88-89ish, whereas the linux kernel didn't exist at all until 91ish. Linux was a hack to get a decent unix on commodity hardware.

mh, Monday, 13 June 2011 19:17 (fifteen years ago)

the computing lab during my undergrad was entirely nexts. that's how i ended up rocking OS X DP. i still have the CD somewhere.

caek, Monday, 13 June 2011 19:47 (fifteen years ago)

so I see that Apple is now selling unlocked iPhones in the USA. quick q's:

1) in the USA, can you get a month-by-month voice plan for one of these (with AT&T, say)?

2) in the USA, can you get a month-by-month *data* plan?

Euler, Tuesday, 14 June 2011 08:33 (fifteen years ago)

(prob this is not the best time to write a q looking for American answers though)

Euler, Tuesday, 14 June 2011 08:34 (fifteen years ago)

I think generally AT&T's prepaid/monthly plans have really mediocre data options. You're probably looking at $25/500MB at best, and that's on top of voice.

T-Mobile has historically had much better rates on that sort of thing, but their 3g network isn't supported by current iPhones.

mh, Tuesday, 14 June 2011 14:08 (fifteen years ago)

thankig you for that list of siracusa's reviews, mh

^ I keep seeing speculative stuff like this that reinforces my expectation that the Air is slowly devolving into an ipad with a keyboard. Apple really does seem to be gearing up for a simultaneous release of Lion and the new Air, the latter of which I reckon will be Apple's biggest push yet into the mass laptop market.

'er indoors is going bonkers with our horribly outdated and clunky Dell Inspiron running Ubuntu 11.04 (Unity is still weird enough and buggy enough to be a problem for her), and we just got a hefty tax return, so I'm thinking about grabbing her one of these new Airs. They need to not be $1200 though. I'm hoping that the new one does turn out to be an upsized ipad of sorts and slides in well under a grand.

Leee Marcello's Putting Challenge (Schlafsack), Wednesday, 29 June 2011 23:05 (fifteen years ago)

why does "apple are releasing a new air" = "air is devolving into ipad with keybaord"?

caek, Wednesday, 29 June 2011 23:30 (fifteen years ago)

maybe if you let er outdoors once in a while she would stop going bonkers

Steve Jobs takes a shower? iPad with a keyboard any day now.

Dudes is there a Mac-to-Mac Skype alternative that older Macs can run? Just about out of patience with Skype, which appears to have become a giant sack of shit.

iChat? Or is there something better?

(Facetime not an option because of my mom's old OS... I think she's on 10.5)

40% chill and 100% negative (Tracer Hand), Friday, 8 July 2011 09:28 (fourteen years ago)

have you tried skype 2.x? it still works and is much lighter.

caek, Friday, 8 July 2011 10:13 (fourteen years ago)

My complaint w/nu-Skype isn't so much its interface or RAM requirements, but video quality has become terrible - unsynced audio, big lags, dropouts, camera not working

40% chill and 100% negative (Tracer Hand), Friday, 8 July 2011 10:21 (fourteen years ago)

old one is worth a try

caek, Friday, 8 July 2011 10:21 (fourteen years ago)

iChat works pretty great for that.

stet, Friday, 8 July 2011 10:30 (fourteen years ago)

what's the problem with skype on a mac? I have 5.0 and it seemed fine the few times I used it.

akm, Friday, 8 July 2011 18:14 (fourteen years ago)

App Store prices adjusted in half a dozen countries. Aus ~15% better off, UK ~15% worse off. Speculation that prices of this week's new hardware could follow suit.

i don't know, it just gets out of sync for me all the time now, and never did before. and the video's choppy. i have an older computer, though. maybe it's not an issue if you've got a newer one.

ugh no macbooks under $1,000 here, that's disappointing.

Gary Barlow syndrome (Autumn Almanac), Wednesday, 20 July 2011 12:50 (fourteen years ago)

how much better is this new sandybridge processor? what exactly were you doing on a macbook air before that this new proc will help significantly?

dayo, Wednesday, 20 July 2011 12:53 (fourteen years ago)

The Mini is $599 or £529, a $254 (42 per cent) mark-up in the UK.

Can't wait for Gruber to ignore this one.

James Mitchell, Wednesday, 20 July 2011 13:36 (fourteen years ago)

It's a lot better than the old £699 or whatever. Previous-but-1 mini was £499, so it's sort of back in line.

stet, Wednesday, 20 July 2011 13:51 (fourteen years ago)
