whoa -- stormin'

La Lechera, Tuesday, 25 September 2007 20:44 (eighteen years ago)

I love the drumming on that record. Dude plays uncomplicated but really interesting parts.

n/a, Tuesday, 25 September 2007 20:45 (eighteen years ago)

big storming!

that episode was pretty sad but not as bad as i remembered. still, i'm not going to go on parties on boats just in case, you know?

colette, Tuesday, 25 September 2007 20:46 (eighteen years ago)

This video is funny because I think you see the drummer more than you see the singer.

n/a, Tuesday, 25 September 2007 20:46 (eighteen years ago)

Oh you better believe I was mentally recording how he played some of those parts while watching them the other night. He's got a pretty minimal kit (only one cymbal + hats) but gets a hell of a lot out of it.

dan m, Tuesday, 25 September 2007 20:47 (eighteen years ago)

er, plus bass, 2 toms & snare

dan m, Tuesday, 25 September 2007 20:47 (eighteen years ago)

Their singer is very uncharismatic.

n/a, Tuesday, 25 September 2007 20:48 (eighteen years ago)

but in general, I think a lot of the dark meaty sound came from the 1953 Neumann U-47 in front of the kit.

This is the boring answer to why good-sounding records recorded in awesome studios sound good

Jordan, Tuesday, 25 September 2007 20:49 (eighteen years ago)

Does anyone have a 1953 Neumann U-47 we can borrow?

KitCat, Tuesday, 25 September 2007 20:50 (eighteen years ago)

would i like that band better if i played an instrument?

La Lechera, Tuesday, 25 September 2007 20:50 (eighteen years ago)

You have to have some tolerance for sad bastard indie rock, I think.

n/a, Tuesday, 25 September 2007 20:51 (eighteen years ago)

When I saw them (The National) touring on the last album, the singer was very, very charismatic. Also very, very drunk. But the kind of drunk that seemed to make him all the more intense and focused instead of aloof and/or petulant.

jon /via/ chi 2.0, Tuesday, 25 September 2007 20:51 (eighteen years ago)

I don't have said tolerance, but that is a cool drum part and a good sound.

Jordan, Tuesday, 25 September 2007 20:51 (eighteen years ago)

would i like that band better if i played an instrument?

No.

jaymc, Tuesday, 25 September 2007 20:52 (eighteen years ago)

Hm. Ok. I tried to like them because you guys are always raving and I found myself feeling very little enthusiasm.

La Lechera, Tuesday, 25 September 2007 20:52 (eighteen years ago)

and I'm not really sure why I love that album so much, since I don't really like sad bastard indie rock that much. I think part of it is that his lyrics are kind of general and enigmatic, not embarassingly personal and sappy like a lot of sad bastard indie rock.

n/a, Tuesday, 25 September 2007 20:53 (eighteen years ago)

I still don't get very excited for the new album, but I like them plenty.

jon /via/ chi 2.0, Tuesday, 25 September 2007 20:53 (eighteen years ago)

I'm not a huge fan, either, Amanda.

jaymc, Tuesday, 25 September 2007 20:53 (eighteen years ago)

I didn't feel antipathy, but I did not want to listen to the album anymore. (I think the one D dl'ed is the most recent)

La Lechera, Tuesday, 25 September 2007 20:54 (eighteen years ago)

I like them. They sound a bit like old U2 to me.

KitCat, Tuesday, 25 September 2007 20:54 (eighteen years ago)

I can understand people not liking it, there's nothing really that jumps out about it and lots of people hate on dude's lyrics (though I think they're great), but I don't know, something about it just gets me.

n/a, Tuesday, 25 September 2007 20:54 (eighteen years ago)

See, I love old U2.

La Lechera, Tuesday, 25 September 2007 20:55 (eighteen years ago)

Also, two sets of brothers = cool.

n/a, Tuesday, 25 September 2007 20:55 (eighteen years ago)

love the lyrics, love the voice, love the band.

kenan, Tuesday, 25 September 2007 20:56 (eighteen years ago)

Also old U2 contains some serious belting in the vocals and this guy sounds asleep/like Crash Test Dummies dude. I like a little more belting, less laconic snoozing. Like I said, I didn't hate it or anything, but it did not move me.

La Lechera, Tuesday, 25 September 2007 20:57 (eighteen years ago)

I *heart* The National.

My sad bastard indie rock tolerance is wicked high, though.

Jenny, Tuesday, 25 September 2007 20:57 (eighteen years ago)

I think he sounds a lot like the Smog dude at times.

dan m, Tuesday, 25 September 2007 20:58 (eighteen years ago)

Yeah, my sad bastard indie tolerance is at an all-time low.

La Lechera, Tuesday, 25 September 2007 20:58 (eighteen years ago)

MINE TOO, AMANDER

river wolf, Tuesday, 25 September 2007 20:59 (eighteen years ago)

MINE THREE

Jordan, Tuesday, 25 September 2007 20:59 (eighteen years ago)

Ha ha, he does sound like the Crash Test Dummies guy.

Do you guys know if their pre-Alligator albums are any good? They have all of them at that record store on Roscoe.

n/a, Tuesday, 25 September 2007 20:59 (eighteen years ago)

So apparently they played pitchfork last year. I guess I just hadn't heard of them then.

KitCat, Tuesday, 25 September 2007 20:59 (eighteen years ago)

I wish I could sing low. ;_;

n/a, Tuesday, 25 September 2007 21:00 (eighteen years ago)

Whoa, thats some interesting stuff about the CMJ submissions on Pitchfork. The headline is needlessly alarmist, but does sound like that SonicBid site needs to get its shit together.

jon /via/ chi 2.0, Tuesday, 25 September 2007 21:00 (eighteen years ago)

I didn't mean to start anything -- I just wondered if my lack of attention to little details of musicianship/recording had anything to do with my inability to like this band.

La Lechera, Tuesday, 25 September 2007 21:00 (eighteen years ago)

i can!

xp

river wolf, Tuesday, 25 September 2007 21:00 (eighteen years ago)

Mr. November is pretty upbeat.

KitCat, Tuesday, 25 September 2007 21:00 (eighteen years ago)

IMHO Sonicbidzz blows.

KitCat, Tuesday, 25 September 2007 21:00 (eighteen years ago)

Pre-Alligator = hit or miss, according to mattttttttt

dan m, Tuesday, 25 September 2007 21:00 (eighteen years ago)

We canceled our 'membership.'

KitCat, Tuesday, 25 September 2007 21:01 (eighteen years ago)

max wants me to sing for BJs and i'm like dude all i can do is croon like bad imitation morrissey or $COUNTRY_SINGER

river wolf, Tuesday, 25 September 2007 21:01 (eighteen years ago)

oooh that sounds good

La Lechera, Tuesday, 25 September 2007 21:01 (eighteen years ago)

Haha, I heard the tail end of "Mmm Mmm Mmm Mmm" on WXRT this morning.

jaymc, Tuesday, 25 September 2007 21:02 (eighteen years ago)

We went through SonicBids for our CMJ application last year and it is some b.s.

n/a, Tuesday, 25 September 2007 21:02 (eighteen years ago)

Lady on phone just now was BIOOOTTTCCCHHH.

KitCat, Tuesday, 25 September 2007 21:02 (eighteen years ago)

I keep forgetting to learn how to be more of a biotch to biotches.

KitCat, Tuesday, 25 September 2007 21:02 (eighteen years ago)

I thought we were all singing for BJs so we could have "harmonies."

n/a, Tuesday, 25 September 2007 21:02 (eighteen years ago)

That could be misinterpreted.

n/a, Tuesday, 25 September 2007 21:03 (eighteen years ago)

NICK SINGS FOR BJs
