instapaper is great, it lets you save web pages when you're browsing on your home computer so you can read them offline on iphone

most of the clutter is on page 2, I like page 1 nice and neat

czn, Monday, 21 July 2008 12:56 (seventeen years ago)

instapaper = fuckn' awesome.

grimly fiendish, Monday, 21 July 2008 12:59 (seventeen years ago)

yes - although not so good for pages requiring a login (where it doesn't work).

toby, Monday, 21 July 2008 13:33 (seventeen years ago)

the apps store will give you the Koran for free and you can add different translations for a fee

I think this is awesome

J0hn D., Monday, 21 July 2008 14:21 (seventeen years ago)

why would you ever need to read anything offline? For the subway?

Tracer Hand, Monday, 21 July 2008 14:23 (seventeen years ago)

dressing rooms, tour bus when out of range, airplanes - I spend about half my life in these places

J0hn D., Monday, 21 July 2008 14:26 (seventeen years ago)

plus it's good for downloading image heavy/bigger pages when in wifi range for reading on the go (esp on iphone 2G) given mobilesafari has no cached browsing and edge is dog slow

czn, Monday, 21 July 2008 14:30 (seventeen years ago)

hell its good for browsing any webpage on the go even in edge range cos edge struggles with anything other than ilx really

czn, Monday, 21 July 2008 14:31 (seventeen years ago)

sunny successor, Monday, 21 July 2008 15:42 (seventeen years ago)

how do you make pages into icons?

s1ocki, Monday, 21 July 2008 20:34 (seventeen years ago)

go to the page. make sure only the part of the page you want on the icon is displayed on yr screen. press + . press add to home screen.

sunny successor, Monday, 21 July 2008 20:38 (seventeen years ago)

Some pages make an icon for you eg google but most you do the way i described above

sunny successor, Monday, 21 July 2008 20:40 (seventeen years ago)

ahhh.

nytimes app is mad slow. maybe i should just page that up.

s1ocki, Monday, 21 July 2008 20:45 (seventeen years ago)

Is Terminal a jailbreak thing?

stet, Monday, 21 July 2008 23:29 (seventeen years ago)

jeez netnewswire is AWFUL.

s1ocki, Tuesday, 22 July 2008 02:24 (seventeen years ago)

jeez netnewswire is AWFUL.

Give the guy a break, he's busy cranking out updates on a daily basis. From his blog: http://inessential.com/?comments=1&postid=3505

I’ve been working like crazy on updates to NetNewsWire for iPhone — but, unfortunately, updates aren’t being pushed to the App Store yet. I don’t know why, though I imagine it’s just that things are crazy in the early days.

I don’t know when updates will go out — wish I did.

In the meantime, here’s what I’ve been doing, and here’s the plan:

1. I’ve been fixing bugs and performance issues, and implementing some of the more obvious features. (Not done yet, but getting there.)

Some of the obvious features include things like email-link, choose-clippings-folder, send-to-Twitterrific, mark-as-unread, and remove-feed-from-iPhone-location.

The plan is to finish this up — make stable and fleshed-out the app as it exists right now.

2. Then I’ll revisit the user interface. A number of people have asked for something like a Combined View, where you see excerpts of news items. A reasonable request, absolutely. But the plan is to shore things up in #1 first, then move on to this, once there’s a stable base with a more complete set of features.

Again, I have no idea when any updates will actually appear. But I have indeed been working as quickly as I can — I’ve been pretending to myself that you’re actually getting the updates. ;) (Though not completely satisfying, the pretense fools me enough to keep me going.)

PS Here are my change notes since last Friday:

(version history continues at link)

The app store is still only showing v1.0 for NNW, but it's up to 1.0.4 now.

Elvis Telecom, Tuesday, 22 July 2008 02:45 (seventeen years ago)

terminal is jailbreak only, sorry

czn, Tuesday, 22 July 2008 08:30 (seventeen years ago)

Not that I have an iPhone, but I do love NetNewsWire on the desktop. That said, the Newsgator service is terrible, randomly decides it can read feeds and can't due to "malformed" code that reads perfectly fine in every other newsreader, on- and off-line. If you have to use Newsgator Online to sync your feeds just like with the desktop version... eh.

Nhex, Tuesday, 22 July 2008 08:40 (seventeen years ago)

i just find the fact that you can't collapse your feed folders makes it pretty much unusable. also super jerky and slow.

s1ocki, Tuesday, 22 July 2008 13:06 (seventeen years ago)

i got truphone and it seems to work pretty well... it's a voip app, 6c a minute in n america. do you think skype is coming though?

still, the ability to make cheap long distance calls & not use up my minutes is pretty incredible. only works over wifi natch but i make pretty much all my LDCs from home anyway.

Catsupppppppppppppp dude 茄蕃, Tuesday, 22 July 2008 18:00 (seventeen years ago)

is anyone else finding the gps kinda inaccurate? mine tends to be off by like 3 blocks.

s1ocki, Tuesday, 22 July 2008 18:47 (seventeen years ago)

Mine is scary-accurate. Remember, GPS doesn't work well indoors, so if you are indoors, it may just give you the location of the nearest cell tower.

schwantz, Tuesday, 22 July 2008 18:52 (seventeen years ago)

ahhh

s1ocki, Tuesday, 22 July 2008 18:58 (seventeen years ago)

fuck me, they *need* to be releasing that netnewswire upgrade ASAP. it's just crashed on me so hard it reset the bloody phone.

and, heh, opening it again takes it right back to, umm, the bit where it crashed. so it hangs all over again.

hoping syncing sorts it out ...

grimly fiendish, Tuesday, 22 July 2008 21:29 (seventeen years ago)

oh for fuck's sake. it doesn't. that is lame, lame, lame-ass fuckwittery.

grimly fiendish, Tuesday, 22 July 2008 21:33 (seventeen years ago)

that sucks a yard of dick. had to remove NNW/resync/set it up again. not the end of the world, no, but a pain.

problem seems to be with feeds that have a shitload of unread stories in them. just FYI, like.

grimly fiendish, Tuesday, 22 July 2008 21:50 (seventeen years ago)

I like the Wordpress app so far.

Catsupppppppppppppp dude 茄蕃, Tuesday, 22 July 2008 21:59 (seventeen years ago)

i've heard from many sources that either iphone developer terms prohibit "turn by turn" guidance or that something or other about the iphone makes this impractical.

is this be true? if so, what does it mean?

moonship journey to baja, Tuesday, 22 July 2008 22:01 (seventeen years ago)

i think the gps isn't accurate enough or somethin

s1ocki, Tuesday, 22 July 2008 22:24 (seventeen years ago)

Yeh, it's in the terms -- you can't make any app that provides "live" route guidance.

stet, Tuesday, 22 July 2008 22:26 (seventeen years ago)

I like the Wordpress app so far.

Oh yes? Do tell...

Ned Raggett, Tuesday, 22 July 2008 22:27 (seventeen years ago)

so ... why?

is it because they're afraid people will be driving and trying to use iphone route guidance?

do they have an exclusive deal with audi to make iphone dashboard units?

moonship journey to baja, Tuesday, 22 July 2008 23:16 (seventeen years ago)

Pandora is like my new favorite thing btw

Dan speaks much truth.

J, Wednesday, 23 July 2008 00:59 (seventeen years ago)

fuck me, they *need* to be releasing that netnewswire upgrade ASAP. it's just crashed on me so hard it reset the bloody phone.

NNW is up to v1.0.7 now, but Apple still hasn't released the updates. Apparently, Apple has a single review queue for everything and updating the update sends you to the back of the line again. Anyway, if you've got NNW questions check out the NNW iPhone forum - it's been pretty helpful.

Elvis Telecom, Wednesday, 23 July 2008 01:07 (seventeen years ago)

Last word from NNW developer Brent:

"I'm working on getting the 1.0.2 release out of the queue so I can upload 1.0.7 instead. I don't know if it will happen. They're sloooooooooooooooooooooooooooow."

Elvis Telecom, Wednesday, 23 July 2008 01:08 (seventeen years ago)

Hey Slutsky, how accurate do you find the GPS?

antexit, Wednesday, 23 July 2008 01:09 (seventeen years ago)

didn't we just talk about this in real life this afternoon?

s1ocki, Wednesday, 23 July 2008 01:17 (seventeen years ago)

wait, so if the gps doesnt do turn by turn, how is different from the first gen google maps app?

sunny successor, Wednesday, 23 July 2008 01:20 (seventeen years ago)

ok dumb question but how do i comment/see more info on photos in exposure?

all i get is a "done" button when i'm looking at a pic!

s1ocki, Wednesday, 23 July 2008 02:33 (seventeen years ago)

hit the blue right arrow in the list to see the details.

stet, Wednesday, 23 July 2008 02:41 (seventeen years ago)

thanks.

the photos near you thing is kind of nuts. at least three of the pics that came up were of friends of mine.

s1ocki, Wednesday, 23 July 2008 04:24 (seventeen years ago)

OK, I need a syncing to-do app. Do I break down and buy OmniFocus? If I do that, does that make me some GTD-spewing fule?
