instapaper is great, it lets you save web pages when you're browsing on your home computer so you can read them offline on iphone

most of the clutter is on page 2, I like page 1 nice and neat

instapaper = fuckn' awesome.

yes - although not so good for pages requiring a login (where it doesn't work).

the apps store will give you the Koran for free and you can add different translations for a fee

I think this is awesome

why would you ever need to read anything offline? For the subway?

dressing rooms, tour bus when out of range, airplanes - I spend about half my life in these places

plus it's good for downloading image heavy/bigger pages when in wifi range for reading on the go (esp on iphone 2G) given mobilesafari has no cached browsing and edge is dog slow

hell its good for browsing any webpage on the go even in edge range cos edge struggles with anything other than ilx really

how do you make pages into icons?

go to the page. make sure only the part of the page you want on the icon is displayed on yr screen. press + . press add to home screen.

Some pages make an icon for you eg google but most you do the way i described above

I’ve been working like crazy on updates to NetNewsWire for iPhone — but, unfortunately, updates aren’t being pushed to the App Store yet. I don’t know why, though I imagine it’s just that things are crazy in the early days.

I don’t know when updates will go out — wish I did.

In the meantime, here’s what I’ve been doing, and here’s the plan:

1. I’ve been fixing bugs and performance issues, and implementing some of the more obvious features. (Not done yet, but getting there.)

Some of the obvious features include things like email-link, choose-clippings-folder, send-to-Twitterrific, mark-as-unread, and remove-feed-from-iPhone-location.

The plan is to finish this up — make stable and fleshed-out the app as it exists right now.

2. Then I’ll revisit the user interface. A number of people have asked for something like a Combined View, where you see excerpts of news items. A reasonable request, absolutely. But the plan is to shore things up in #1 first, then move on to this, once there’s a stable base with a more complete set of features.

Again, I have no idea when any updates will actually appear. But I have indeed been working as quickly as I can — I’ve been pretending to myself that you’re actually getting the updates. ;) (Though not completely satisfying, the pretense fools me enough to keep me going.)

Not that I have an iPhone, but I do love NetNewsWire on the desktop. That said, the Newsgator service is terrible, randomly decides it can read feeds and can't due to "malformed" code that reads perfectly fine in every other newsreader, on- and off-line. If you have to use Newsgator Online to sync your feeds just like with the desktop version... eh.

i just find the fact that you can't collapse your feed folders makes it pretty much unusable. also super jerky and slow.

i got truphone and it seems to work pretty well... it's a voip app, 6c a minute in n america. do you think skype is coming though?

still, the ability to make cheap long distance calls & not use up my minutes is pretty incredible. only works over wifi natch but i make pretty much all my LDCs from home anyway.

is anyone else finding the gps kinda inaccurate? mine tends to be off by like 3 blocks.

Mine is scary-accurate. Remember, GPS doesn't work well indoors, so if you are indoors, it may just give you the location of the nearest cell tower.

and, heh, opening it again takes it right back to, umm, the bit where it crashed. so it hangs all over again.

Yeh, it's in the terms -- you can't make any app that provides "live" route guidance.

NNW is up to v1.0.7 now, but Apple still hasn't released the updates. Apparently, Apple has a single review queue for everything and updating the update sends you to the back of the line again. Anyway, if you've got NNW questions check out the NNW iPhone forum - it's been pretty helpful.

Last word from NNW developer Brent:

"I'm working on getting the 1.0.2 release out of the queue so I can upload 1.0.7 instead. I don't know if it will happen. They're sloooooooooooooooooooooooooooow."
