1:51. Slower than my marathon pace!

Jeff, Sunday, 29 May 2011 03:51 (fifteen years ago)

Yeah, I may try scissors. I worry it will just continue to fray and I've only worn these things once and they were kind of expensive. I could also wear socks, I guess, but it sort of defeats the purpose. I freakin' love everything else about them, they are so comfy that it's hard to resist wearing them around everywhere.

my fastest half is like 1:58, u win Jeff

10 mile race yesterday, not a half. I'd be estatic if I ran a 1:51 half. Or a 1:58. Hell, 2 hours.

Jeff, Sunday, 29 May 2011 15:32 (fifteen years ago)

I ran a sub 2 half in just training runs, never in a race though. Half PR is 3:10!!!!

Jeff, Sunday, 29 May 2011 15:34 (fifteen years ago)

haha oops :(

Jeff, Sunday, 5 June 2011 04:40 (fifteen years ago)

^srsly

Did my first beer mile tonight. 11:06. I can do better.

What's that?

tobo73, Sunday, 5 June 2011 10:53 (fifteen years ago)

Chug one can of beer, run one lap around a track, repeat 3 more times as fast as you can.

Jeff, Sunday, 5 June 2011 15:13 (fifteen years ago)

god the heat makes it a different kettle of fish going running...went on friday and it nearly killed me, could only manage about 3 miles.

MAYBE YOU SHOULDN'T BE LIVING HERE!! (Local Garda), Sunday, 5 June 2011 15:15 (fifteen years ago)

so true

jed_, Sunday, 5 June 2011 15:43 (fifteen years ago)

I went out to do Glasgow Parkrun yesterday with a bitching hangover. I made it round in 30:06, which is a PB for myself for the distance.

I was a bit disappointed though, cos around the 4km mark I felt really sick and had to stop. I walked about 30 sec to a minute, then managed to get my stride back on and ran to the end. So, new PB is good, but I could easily have broken the half hour mark had it not been for that. Next week...

scotstvo, Sunday, 5 June 2011 19:11 (fifteen years ago)

Oh man, I am totally going to try a beer mile.

the girl from spirea x (f. hazel), Sunday, 5 June 2011 20:42 (fifteen years ago)

this you irl http://i.imgur.com/v3kw8.gif (cozen), Sunday, 5 June 2011 20:43 (fifteen years ago)

sounds like a recipe for vomit

MAYBE YOU SHOULDN'T BE LIVING HERE!! (Local Garda), Sunday, 5 June 2011 20:45 (fifteen years ago)

Here's the official rules. http://www.beermile.com/faq.beer#rules

The worst part was the beer was warm. Warm pbr makes me hate life.

Jeff, Sunday, 5 June 2011 21:17 (fifteen years ago)

Tip #1 of beer mile (aka "chunder mile" round these parts): use uncarbonated beer!
Tip #2: accept that you're going to vomit, be prepared

I knew a guy at university who claimed to have the world's best time (about five minutes) but there was some controversy over the actual distance he'd run.

Terje Chocolate Orange (seandalai), Sunday, 5 June 2011 21:55 (fifteen years ago)

In the UK it's done with pints btw. Though I've never attempted it myself.

Terje Chocolate Orange (seandalai), Sunday, 5 June 2011 21:56 (fifteen years ago)

yeah it's a big thing isn't it? hash harriers etc. a drinking club with a running problem LOL

jed_, Sunday, 5 June 2011 21:58 (fifteen years ago)

did ~8miles today, havent really run for the last few months due to scheduling issues, felt rad, missed it

ice cr?m, Sunday, 5 June 2011 22:13 (fifteen years ago)

5.5 miles today in baking sun, furthest i've gone in a while, prob fucked up shin again but can't avoid that until the state can find the time to give me free physio and i have the cash to get new trainers.

do you guys fuck with energy drinks at all? i sometimes find drinking a powerade before or during a run really gives me a huge boost. in fact i almost always find it does, don't think it's just a placebo effect. i assume it's horrible for you tho, so sweet.

MAYBE YOU SHOULDN'T BE LIVING HERE!! (Local Garda), Tuesday, 7 June 2011 11:25 (fifteen years ago)

usually a banana + small glass of oj (sometimes, if i have it) + large glass of water works for me (i usually go running first thing in the morning)

Garyln (La Lechera), Tuesday, 7 June 2011 11:59 (fifteen years ago)

yeah i swear by bananas for running...

MAYBE YOU SHOULDN'T BE LIVING HERE!! (Local Garda), Tuesday, 7 June 2011 12:02 (fifteen years ago)

ha!

i have a sore hip and have had for the last week or so. hope this isn't going to be "a thing".

jed_, Tuesday, 7 June 2011 12:20 (fifteen years ago)

Ive been fucking with those energy gels recently on longer runs (12+ mi) and think they really do help. Otherwise it's bananas, water, and coffee for me.

tobo73, Tuesday, 7 June 2011 12:24 (fifteen years ago)

I don't bother with energy drinks/gatorade unless it's really long distances, like 14+ miles.

Jeff, Tuesday, 7 June 2011 12:52 (fifteen years ago)

or really really hot.

Jeff, Tuesday, 7 June 2011 12:52 (fifteen years ago)

i have no idea how some of you can post "i did 8 miles yesterday" (or 12 or 14!) like it's no big thing. i've only just managed to get up to 4 or 5 after a 5 month build up and i still have to slow or even stop and rest after three. maybe it's just because i am lol old.

when you all post that you ran e.g eight miles do you mean that you ran that continuously at a more or less steady pace or is that a cumulative amount taking in stops or periods where you slow right down or walk?

jed_, Tuesday, 7 June 2011 13:02 (fifteen years ago)

Mostly continuously. Not very fast in my case though. And I'll stop at water fountains every few miles. It can take some time to build up to that. But I've run a fall and then a spring marathon consecutively, so my endurance has been built up pretty good.

Jeff, Tuesday, 7 June 2011 13:34 (fifteen years ago)

the longest i ever run (always continuously) is 13 or 14. Never more frequently than once a week, and I've been shortening the in-between runs steadily which seems to help. I'm down to like 3.5 miles on those days. I also never run two days in a row. My knees don't take kindly to back-to-back runs, regardless of distance. am thinking about ramping up the long runs over the summer, to explore possibility of a marathon, but that has gone badly in past years.

I've always assumed that our bodies each have a certain max distance that they can handle. For some it's 100 miles, others 5, and it's just wise to be aware of that.

tobo73, Tuesday, 7 June 2011 13:41 (fifteen years ago)

haha jed a couple years ago i had the exact same reaction to people who could run 8 or 12 or w/e, and then i turned into one of those people, the body is an amazing thing praise jesus

ice cr?m, Tuesday, 7 June 2011 14:08 (fifteen years ago)

i had prob been running 3 years consistently a couple few times a week before i broke 8 miles

ice cr?m, Tuesday, 7 June 2011 14:10 (fifteen years ago)

i've been running for 2 years now, and i rarely can break the 5 mi mark, and always take (short) walking breaks after each mile or so. i feel a little creaky, and i don't want to, i dunno, break anything? putting myself into a position to get injured would be unusually expensive for me, and i live on the 3rd floor with 2 dogs. i'm not made of glass, but i'm not made of steel either.

Garyln (La Lechera), Tuesday, 7 June 2011 14:12 (fifteen years ago)

i found there are sort of waypoints, some last longer than others. it took maybe three months to get to doing 4 miles regularly, but maybe only another few weeks to be up to doing 5 and 6. then after 5 months i was up to doing 7 regularly enough, but i may have rushed things a little as have had my probs with injuries. i dunno, i did what felt good, i started running in august and by jan was doing 8 or 9, furthest i've gone is about 11 miles.

i would definitely take tobo's advice though, what i did wrong isn't so much pushing myself to long distances as trying to repeat those distances a few days later. now i know, one long run a week and keep the rest short.

i seldom stop to walk in runs but whatever works i guess. i never did at all until the last 2/3 months when i've been running sporadically to get myself back from a series of injuries.

MAYBE YOU SHOULDN'T BE LIVING HERE!! (Local Garda), Tuesday, 7 June 2011 14:18 (fifteen years ago)

and then i turned into one of those people

i suppose it could still happen. when i started in january i was going 200 yards and stopping completely because i thought i was going to die from shortage of breath and look at me now, praise jesus.

jed_, Tuesday, 7 June 2011 14:24 (fifteen years ago)

i havent been particularly ambitious abt increasing my distance/time, but ive found once i break some sort of barrier then it becomes easy to return to, its all vv psychological imho

ice cr?m, Tuesday, 7 June 2011 14:28 (fifteen years ago)

like im sure i couldve run father much sooner than i did

ice cr?m, Tuesday, 7 June 2011 14:29 (fifteen years ago)

What about running alone vs with a partner? I always run by myself and would hate to have to coordinate scheds with someone else but suspect it would be a big help in terms of motivation and discipline.

tobo73, Tuesday, 7 June 2011 14:43 (fifteen years ago)

oh yeah running w/other people is like WAY easier, tho i dont do it often

ice cr?m, Tuesday, 7 June 2011 14:46 (fifteen years ago)

i prefer running with wolves...

ideas are death (Lamp), Tuesday, 7 June 2011 14:46 (fifteen years ago)

otm

ice cr?m, Tuesday, 7 June 2011 14:50 (fifteen years ago)

I run alone 99% of the time.

Jeff, Tuesday, 7 June 2011 16:16 (fifteen years ago)

sometimes run with friends but it presents complications...meeting up, people being late, wanting to hang out after but needing a shower, etc etc. easier to just get up and run alone...into the night.

MAYBE YOU SHOULDN'T BE LIVING HERE!! (Local Garda), Tuesday, 7 June 2011 16:22 (fifteen years ago)

I try to run alone but Jesus is always carrying me

Nothing new there

Jeff, Wednesday, 8 June 2011 17:42 (fifteen years ago)

Many newbie barefoot runners continue to stride as if they were in shoes, landing heavily on their heels. ouch! dudes

ice cr?m, Wednesday, 8 June 2011 17:45 (fifteen years ago)

I took my mew Minimus trail shoes for a spin on the treadmill the other day, and found it more fatiguing on my muscles than it was to run trails with them. Really enjoying the whole minimal shoe thing, though. Over time I had adjusted my stride for mid-foot striking before actually trying minimal shoes, so now I no longer feel like I am fighting against the shoes to land on my mid-foot. The Asics I wore before had such a big cushioned heel that it was hard to avoid heel impact.

Not sure if this is the thread for it (maybe I'll start a new one if anyone is interested), but have any of you tried any of these "adventure race" things? I signed up for a Tough Mudder this fall and am super excited about it. Am training with weights, running, and HIIT type stuff.
