the university of hawaii teams used to be called THE RAINBOW WARRIORS and sort of still are, but they replaced the rainbow with a stylized H ft. hawaiian iconography and allowed each sport to choose their own name and there was this huge complicated fight over it between 1) the university, 2) hawaiian activists opposing the use of the iconography and 3) football players who had been complaining for years about being called the rainbow warriors

i think it sounds adorable. the mascot should be tiny anthropomorphic clogs or something.

i'm trying to find the old logo! it has been erased from the page of time. it looked like one of these:

there was a rural HS near me built near a freeway called, sadly, "I-35 High School". their mascot is the Roadrunners. it's even in a town, technically!

That's the awesomest thing I've ever heard of.

I keep forgetting you're from Pella, goole. Those kids I ran into with the wooden shoes in the park must be starting college now.

Pleasant Plains, Wednesday, 25 May 2011 21:35 (fifteen years ago)

yeah i'm looking at what i can see online about my hometown and it seems pretty different already *nostalgic sigh*

goole, Wednesday, 25 May 2011 21:37 (fifteen years ago)

my hs mascot was variously a pirate or a raccoon

my college mascot was...a color

yeah i grew up there, do you know the place?

goole, Wednesday, 25 May 2011 22:17 (fifteen years ago)

I live in Des Moines, a good friend from high school followed his wife to college at Central, and they worked/lived at a motel there for a while.

There are some weirdo conservative things they ran into, like people scolding you for mowing your lawn on Sunday or post-dating checks written on Sunday so it would look like they weren't shopping on Jesus day.

A really nice coworker of mine is from Pella. He unironically has a Creation Museum shirt and coffee mug that I choose to ignore.

But I love dutch letters! Tulips are pretty cool.

mh, Wednesday, 25 May 2011 22:22 (fifteen years ago)

what's better than roses on a piano?

mh, Wednesday, 25 May 2011 22:33 (fifteen years ago)

sarahel, Wednesday, 25 May 2011 22:34 (fifteen years ago)

Listen, mh, about the monks...

For one throb of the (Michael White), Wednesday, 25 May 2011 22:34 (fifteen years ago)

Hah, there is contention whether the derivation of the city name has anything to do with monks.
