been trying twitter for the first time these last two weeks. i set it up to tweet the E3 convention last week. I've since realised that nobody can really see my tweets unless they are following me.

Thus my audience of 1 person was most certainly overloaded with my news of nintendo, sony and xbox and i suspect additionally irritated by my constant moaning about motion controllers and crap game sequels.
This i found both hilarious and sad at the same time.

following celebs I've yet to comprehend a use for. fun at first, but none of them have anything vastly exciting to tell us. Do people reply to them?

It's very useful for following news and community type functions, although still wading through who and what is out there.

stupid display name. begone

Ste, Wednesday, 15 June 2011 14:11 (fifteen years ago)

But if you were tweeting the convention using a commonly used hashtag, then your audience would have been more than one; it's quite common for people to keep a hashtag stream open.

mike t-diva, Wednesday, 15 June 2011 14:15 (fifteen years ago)

It's funny and a little creepy how huge celebrities can have nothing to say but what they had for lunch, while has-beens might have interesting tweets. As I'm not into celebrity arcana I just avoid all of them unless it's some musician whose views I respect.

Deremiah Was a Bullfrog (u s steel), Wednesday, 15 June 2011 14:22 (fifteen years ago)

xp yes i started using hash tags half way through, having seen other e3 posters doing it. i had no idea what i was doing though.

Ste, Wednesday, 15 June 2011 14:28 (fifteen years ago)

At first I naively thought it would bring omgcelebrities closer to ~normal~ people but it's had the opposite effect. Even now it's creepy seeing one person following 23 people and being followed by 1.8m.

Neko Case is a good re-tweeter
Errol Morris has taken to tweeting surprisingly strongly
Norm MacDonald's twitter short fiction is kind of awesome

following 23 people and being followed by 1.8m.

yes this!

So far I'm following
Juliette Lewis
Jason Alexander
Richard Herring
Patton Oswalt

lots of video game or science type groups, including CERN

i have one irl friend on twitter lol.

Ste, Wednesday, 15 June 2011 21:34 (fifteen years ago)

The only lolfamous I'm following atm is Simon Le Bon because he's properly hilarious. Other than that my following requires either (a) reciprocity (because I only use Twitter to have conversations with people) or (b) the followee to be a former friend and active social node (because without that person in the chain I miss important conversations). It's been working pretty well, especially with most people's retweets turned off.

Most of the celebrities (which term I use with varying degrees of scare quotes) I follow are in some way involved with comedy. And Twitter is clearly kind of an ideal side-outlet for a lot of them.

SNEEZED GOING DOWN STEPS, PAIN WHEN PUTTING SOCKS ON (Deric W. Haircare), Wednesday, 15 June 2011 23:09 (fifteen years ago)

Yeah, Peter Serafinowicz has used Twitter as a test ground for new jokes in the past (and probably still does).

We are Real solid sex doll AKA RSSD (Autumn Almanac), Wednesday, 15 June 2011 23:17 (fifteen years ago)

Juliette Lewis seemed to only ever retweet. I stopped following after a while.

Questlove, John Scalzi, Warren Ellis, William Gibson...those dudes are A+ twittereererers. Love Pete Serafinowicz.
Albert Brooks & Steve Martin are p great.

i don't get how this is creepy - you expect them to follow all 1.8m of their fans back?

We attempt to reveal the lives of our predecessors through the tweets of yesteryear: Real one-line brevities from old newspapers, as they appeared--or close.

Thanks to twitter, i now know what planking is. While my initial reaction is to ridicule it is a trend, perhaps a more constructive use of time would be mocking it in an equally insipid trend that requires as little physical & mental work as possible. I think Breathing is the only action left that qualifies.
