so hard, being white
― ban drake (the rapper) (max), Wednesday, 25 May 2011 20:27 (fifteen years ago)
i have read that anti-white bias is a problem
― horseshoe, Wednesday, 25 May 2011 20:29 (fifteen years ago)
it's not really a problem. it's just a noticeable thing from time to time.
― difficult listening hour, Wednesday, 25 May 2011 20:30 (fifteen years ago)
it's really more a class thing cuz the japanese kids get it too.
― difficult listening hour, Wednesday, 25 May 2011 20:31 (fifteen years ago)
oh i wasn't even talking about hawaii! i was just referring to that times article max linked to in another thread.
― horseshoe, Wednesday, 25 May 2011 20:33 (fifteen years ago)
oh whoops! i get asked about this by a surprisingly large number of (white) people, and it's weird because haole-resentment is a thing, just like you'd expect it to be in an imperial colony with a mostly-native underclass, but it's not really a serious thing and a lot of people on the west coast ask me about it in hushed commiserating tones like they think people are being lynched and it always weirds me out/makes me uncomfortable and then i feel guilty for making whatever jokes i made about it.
(your post would not have been one of these even if it had been real though)
― difficult listening hour, Wednesday, 25 May 2011 20:47 (fifteen years ago)
yeah, when you posted i figured you must have gotten that kind of question before. i know very little about hawaii tbh.
― horseshoe, Wednesday, 25 May 2011 20:48 (fifteen years ago)
hawaiian sociopolitics are way more interesting than i thought they were when i lived there but that'd probably be true no matter where i was a bored teenager.
― difficult listening hour, Wednesday, 25 May 2011 20:52 (fifteen years ago)
your HS's shameless theft of NFL intellectual property is inspiring to me

i never liked being a viking and then i went to college at portland state where i was STILL A VIKING
― difficult listening hour, Wednesday, 25 May 2011 20:54 (fifteen years ago)
everywhere, that's where i'm a viking
― difficult listening hour, Wednesday, 25 May 2011 20:55 (fifteen years ago)
vikings are sort of a creepy mascot; sorry minnesota
― horseshoe, Wednesday, 25 May 2011 20:55 (fifteen years ago)
at least it makes some sense up here!
― goole, Wednesday, 25 May 2011 20:56 (fifteen years ago)
youve never heard of the infamous viking raids of hawaii i guess
― ban drake (the rapper) (max), Wednesday, 25 May 2011 20:57 (fifteen years ago)
Hahah the Whitehall Vikings had the exact same mascot/logo but in West Michigan. Is there only one set of HS logos in the WORLD, like one wildcat, one anchor, one viking, one...whatever. I know that it's the same everywhere, I KNOW it, and yet whenever I see that damn viking, I get a little shock of recognition.

follow up: did thor heyerdahl go to hawaii ever
Oh sorry, I confused Montague's mascot (a wildcat) with their fight song ("Anchor's Aweigh"). I guess no one is The Anchors lollllll.
― Back up the lesbian canoe (Laurel), Wednesday, 25 May 2011 21:00 (fifteen years ago)
haha my high school football team really should have been called the anchors
― horseshoe, Wednesday, 25 May 2011 21:01 (fifteen years ago)
there was a rural HS near me built near a freeway called, sadly, "I-35 High School". their mascot is the Roadrunners. it's even in a town, technically!
― goole, Wednesday, 25 May 2011 21:02 (fifteen years ago)
just as long as they use jonathan richman as their fight song.
― difficult listening hour, Wednesday, 25 May 2011 21:03 (fifteen years ago)
i don't know for sure but i kind of doubt it
― goole, Wednesday, 25 May 2011 21:05 (fifteen years ago)
omg I-35 high school. those poor kids.
― horseshoe, Wednesday, 25 May 2011 21:05 (fifteen years ago)
the university of hawaii teams used to be called THE RAINBOW WARRIORS and sort of still are, but they replaced the rainbow with a stylized H ft. hawaiian iconography and allowed each sport to choose their own name and there was this huge complicated fight over it between 1) the university, 2) hawaiian activists opposing the use of the iconography and 3) football players who had been complaining for years about being called the rainbow warriors

i went to a quaker school and our mascot was a quaker
― burberry kush (elmo argonaut), Wednesday, 25 May 2011 21:07 (fifteen years ago)
i went to a quaker school and we didnt have a mascot because we didnt have team sports because we didnt believe in competition
― ban drake (the rapper) (max), Wednesday, 25 May 2011 21:08 (fifteen years ago)

I went to school in a town named after a particular animal, and the school's mascot was... that very same animal.

i think it sounds adorable. the mascot should be tiny anthropomorphic clogs or something.
― horseshoe, Wednesday, 25 May 2011 21:19 (fifteen years ago)
i'm trying to find the old logo! it has been erased from the page of time. it looked like one of these:

That's the awesomest thing I've ever heard of.
I keep forgetting you're from Pella, goole. Those kids I ran into with the wooden shoes in the park must be starting college now.
