I had to cut my 4 miles down to 2 on Sunday because my knees have taken to stabbing me with PAIN at every footfall and now I can't even walk down stairs without limping.

Having gone from 0 miles a day for my entire life to 4 miles every other day immediately, for the last 3.5 weeks, I suspect I've just overdone it. I'm also probably not warming up properly, and everyone's telling me my bought-in-2005 (but barely used) trainers are almost certainly too old and won't be giving me the necessary support.

London trainer shop tips? Warm-up/warm-down tips? How-not-to-be-a-running-noob tips? Right now I feel like I'll never run again, and that's GUTTING because I've been loving it and it's doing me real good.

This is basically me right now. Has anybody had any good experiences in a London running shop in the last two years? I live SE and the one in Dulwich has closed.

I went from getting basically no exercise in a year to running two miles a night for a week, partly up a hill; in retrospect this was obviously stupid but having taken a week off I'm getting creaky patella-knack even doing moderate short bursts to ease back in. I'm not in agony but it feels achey and wrong.

Want to get a gait analysis done, but reluctant to be told by enthusiastic running shop dudes that I need to immediately replace my new birthday-present Nikes with some Asics shit that costs £120. Have also run without pain before (but not as regularly) so wondering if it's more of a general lack of fitness in the surrounding area

MPx4A, Wednesday, 25 May 2011 17:41 (fifteen years ago)

lol I downloaded E2-E4 yesterday, awesome.

I am just getting back into running. Started running 20 min/day 2 weeks ago and the plan is to up it by a minute a week til I'm running 36 minutes (and hopefully 4+ miles) a day by the end of August.

But my 22 minute run yesterday had me absolutely gassed. I know it takes a while to get back into the groove, but damn. Maybe it's age.

you went from no exercise at all to two miles a night every other day? the older you are, the more you are flirting with doing yourself a serious injury it will take months to recover from.

yeah, I didn't realise how far it was until I checked today. I became 28 last month, having previously been invincible

MPx4A, Wednesday, 25 May 2011 20:12 (fifteen years ago)

I'd start with a walking/running mix, and by running I mean jogging... like 12-14 minute mile pace. Shoes don't matter at this point, you should be spending six or eight months letting your muscles and bones adapt to your new running regimen. Your heart and lungs can make the adjustment in two or three weeks, but the rest of your frame takes far longer.

^ warrior king

my 26th birthday is in two days. think i may do 26 miles on my 26th birthday, then try to keep up the streak for future birthdays (27 miles for 27th birthday, etc.)—is that totally stupid, or am i onto something awesome?

i genuinely thought when i first joined that he was the admin (ilxor), Thursday, 26 May 2011 15:30 (fifteen years ago)

For you, not stupid. For me, insane.

Jeff, Thursday, 26 May 2011 15:39 (fifteen years ago)

sounds doable but it might cause you to hate your birthday

I am so wrecked this morning

jeff, Thursday, 26 May 2011 16:28 (fifteen years ago)

my pic up there is of a hot spring I chilled in btw

jeff, Thursday, 26 May 2011 16:28 (fifteen years ago)

did you chill in hot spring in middle of the run? that is burly.

did 10 hilly miles today - the first legit hot+humid day of summer here in DC - and it was brutal. my pace slowed by over a min/mile and I was just glad to finish without a heat stroke. not a good sign. one of the posters here is doing major miles in texas right? I guess you just get used to the heat. feel like it gets harder for me every year i get older.

Ilxor trains in a 120 degree sauna.

Jeff, Thursday, 26 May 2011 18:19 (fifteen years ago)

Hey does anyone here run with with a new-style ipod nano, the touchscreen ones? Does it feel OK to clip it onto the neck of a vest?

My old nano, which I used with an arm band, is kaputt. I would just get a shuffle, but I also need something for everyday use.

I ran into a tree today! More specifically a low bough went right into my face. Shows you can be dangerously inattentive when running even without music!

Today I ran to Walmart and back lol

The staff at Run and Become certainly know what they're talking about, though I don't know whether they do gait analysis. Runners' Need do do gait analysis but I haven't had much interaction with the staff.

Fear Moldova and the Nation of Leaners (seandalai), Friday, 27 May 2011 01:36 (fifteen years ago)

sports psychology question for yall. and maybe this only applies to me because i like to NOT listen to music while i run, but to what degree do other people find negativity being used as a motivating factor for endurance, whether subconsciously or not? my headspace is definitely much more clear and peaceful after the run, but during the run i find my inner dialogue is way more likely to be that of a screaming drill sergeant than a cheerful high school track coach. sometimes i wonder if i'm somehow inhibiting my potential if i allow myself to be critical, or if that kind of "aggressive" criticism ultimately produces results? not schizo, and maybe it doesn't even matter, but i'm just interested in knowing if anyone's ever found themselves considering this while they run.

del griffith, Friday, 27 May 2011 01:39 (fifteen years ago)

Negativity is a huge motivating factor for me. Nothing wrong with that. Suits my personality.

Jeff, Friday, 27 May 2011 02:29 (fifteen years ago)

yah 12 mi in to the springs, hung for 45 min or so and then 12 mi out in the rain. pretty solid trip.

jeff, Friday, 27 May 2011 06:29 (fifteen years ago)

SO awesome!

tehresa, Friday, 27 May 2011 13:16 (fifteen years ago)

Time! Pace? Did you PR?

Jeff, Friday, 27 May 2011 14:31 (fifteen years ago)

i don't really use negativity as a motivator, or really positivity either. i think i just think about the motion and feeling good and how good i'll feel if i run a bit further. sometimes there is a little battle, when i'm in pain or tired and my face goes a bit more grimacey and determined, i like these feelings too especially when you're really being gutsy with yourself...pushing yourself on. music plays a huge role in all of this for me, i often have big euphoric rushes when running, it's the only time i really listen to dance music anymore and i guess i took enough drugs for those feelings to come back a bit when i run.

around xmas i was running down the canal i normally run beside and it was totally frozen over, i got near canary wharf, for US readers that's a big financial district with a skyline etc, amazing looking at night, and then this came on and there was nobody around and i jumped up and down a bit...

Suggest Banter (Local Garda), Friday, 27 May 2011 14:38 (fifteen years ago)

no idea on pace. it was just over six hours for the whole trip but that included the springs, stopping for photos or just to poke around, talking to people, etc.

what is PR?

jeff, Friday, 27 May 2011 18:04 (fifteen years ago)

Personal Record. I was joking. I'm a comedian. Making fun of myself, since I don't really do runs where I just enjoy myself, the scenery, or anything like that. All I want to do is go faster than I did previously.

Jeff, Friday, 27 May 2011 18:07 (fifteen years ago)

I have never been more out of shape

Latham Green, Friday, 27 May 2011 18:23 (fifteen years ago)

i almost always have music on when i run on the road or around town, otherwise i'd bore myself to death. on trail runs, i often run without, in part because it's so beautiful that i want to keep it "natural," in part because i don't want to get killed by a mountain biker.

i'm not "negative" unless im in an event, in which case i _hate_ being passed or dropped in the last half of the course. no one is immune from the wrath of my psychodrama.

xp

so come right back, we have count dracula and we have adam rich (Hunt3r), Friday, 27 May 2011 18:35 (fifteen years ago)

emotionally it was a PR for sure. I had thought about going back today but my legs are so so shot. something to look forward to, I guess.

jeff, Friday, 27 May 2011 19:39 (fifteen years ago)

one of the posters here is doing major miles in texas right? I guess you just get used to the heat.

hi dere, that's me!

yup, on track for ~50 miles this week at least. you definitely have to heat-adapt. my wife asks why i go running mid-afternoon (she doesn't get it) and it's totally to get better at hot weather running.

i genuinely thought when i first joined that he was the admin (ilxor), Friday, 27 May 2011 20:18 (fifteen years ago)

yeah tbh since moving here my runs/jogs have really suffered. i hate dc weather. i can't get used to it. HELP!

tehresa, Friday, 27 May 2011 21:01 (fifteen years ago)

re: DC - what time are you running? I've been starting at like 7pm, definitely takes the edge off the heat.

I bought the NB Minimus Trail shoes last week and took them out on the trail the next day (I had never attempted to run on a trail before). The run was fine, my calves were fine, had no problem with the whole barefoot/midfoot-striking thing, but the collars of the shoes dug holes into the back of my ankles. A week later and the scabs are finally coming off. Is the skin even thick enough to build callouses on that part of your body? I'm not sure if I should keep trying or just attempt to return them (blood stains and all). Seems like all the reviews I read about them rave about how comfortable they are, especially around the collars.

rockapads, Sunday, 29 May 2011 02:57 (fifteen years ago)

oooooh i want minimus, that sounds awesome except for the ankle thing. the NB MT100 trail shoe had the same issue (fixed in the MT101)

ran 26 today, 26th birthday. 5 hours and a bit of change, didnt time it exactly

i genuinely thought when i first joined that he was the admin (ilxor), Sunday, 29 May 2011 03:37 (fifteen years ago)

rockapads, you could just take a pair of scissors to the collar?

i genuinely thought when i first joined that he was the admin (ilxor), Sunday, 29 May 2011 03:38 (fifteen years ago)

Wasn't going to but decided at the last minute to run a 10 mile race today. Went nice and easy because my knee has been bugging me since Wisconsin. Like really slow.

Jeff, Sunday, 29 May 2011 03:44 (fifteen years ago)

what was yr finish time? ;)

i genuinely thought when i first joined that he was the admin (ilxor), Sunday, 29 May 2011 03:48 (fifteen years ago)

1:51. Slower than my marathon pace!

Jeff, Sunday, 29 May 2011 03:51 (fifteen years ago)

Yeah, I may try scissors. I worry it will just continue to fray and I've only worn these things once and they were kind of expensive. I could also wear socks, I guess, but it sort of defeats the purpose. I freakin' love everything else about them, they are so comfy that it's hard to resist wearing them around everywhere.

rockapads, Sunday, 29 May 2011 05:23 (fifteen years ago)

my fastest half is like 1:58, u win Jeff

i genuinely thought when i first joined that he was the admin (ilxor), Sunday, 29 May 2011 14:06 (fifteen years ago)

my fastest half is like 1:58, u win Jeff

10 mile race yesterday, not a half. I'd be estatic if I ran a 1:51 half. Or a 1:58. Hell, 2 hours.

Jeff, Sunday, 29 May 2011 15:32 (fifteen years ago)

I ran a sub 2 half in just training runs, never in a race though. Half PR is 3:10!!!!

Jeff, Sunday, 29 May 2011 15:34 (fifteen years ago)

haha oops :(

Did my first beer mile tonight. 11:06. I can do better.

Jeff, Sunday, 5 June 2011 04:40 (fifteen years ago)

^srsly

Did my first beer mile tonight. 11:06. I can do better.

What's that?

tobo73, Sunday, 5 June 2011 10:53 (fifteen years ago)

Chug one can of beer, run one lap around a track, repeat 3 more times as fast as you can.
