i ask because when i was a kid i was like "fuck flossing," and i really regret that now. there's this great passage in "look homeward, angel" where the narrator has all these dental problems and has to get some of his teeth pulled, and he calculates desperately that if he only loses one tooth every two years, and they're mostly back teeth, by middle age he might still have some fifteen teeth left to keep up appearances. the ONLY benefit i gained from not-flossing as a youth was the swell of delight i felt at seeing my own crazy tortured dental thinking reflected so perfectly and horribly on the page.
