you spoiling the show itt twice in three days is only 40% of my problem, the other 60% is your attitude

How I Slapped Your Mother

excitebikable boy (Drugs A. Money), Thursday, 19 May 2011 07:59 (fifteen years ago)

On the fence here; I'd really have preferred not to know, but JF has a point about widely-aired promo material. Generally though if I see or know anything in advance about anything like this I find it better to err on the side of caution.

Simon H. Shit (Simon H.), Thursday, 19 May 2011 07:59 (fifteen years ago)

that exactly is my point, many of us avoid ads so as not to have shows spoiled and jf has taken that choice away from us

百万个叉烧包 (Autumn Almanac), Thursday, 19 May 2011 08:03 (fifteen years ago)

Msgboard thread about yr favorite show is a bad place to hang out if you don't want any info abt yr favorite show...

just sayin

excitebikable boy (Drugs A. Money), Thursday, 19 May 2011 08:06 (fifteen years ago)

will never enjoy show again now, because I KNOW TOO MUCH

marc gasloi (symsymsym), Thursday, 19 May 2011 08:07 (fifteen years ago)

on the rare occasion that i watch a new broadcast on television, i always get annoyed by the commercials for following shows and remember why i love hulu so much

the fact that the show is only 20-22 minutes and it's a comedy makes every little detail feel like a big spoiler, like i'm being prepped for a joke i'll see later and the joke won't make me laugh cause it was already in the back of my mind. i even find myself avoiding plot synopses now. basically i already like the show and don't need to be convinced to watch it so advance notice is just annoying.

not railing on you jf just explaining how it can be annoying for some

more fish for kunta (zachlyon), Thursday, 19 May 2011 08:08 (fifteen years ago)

This is the same thread where people live-post reactions to the show as it's airing, so getting butthurt over one inconsequential post about the commercial on tv the night before the show airs seems like much ado about nothing.

Johnny Fever, Thursday, 19 May 2011 08:19 (fifteen years ago)

30 rock is terrible for playing long detailed commercials right before it is broadcast! (in canada)

marc gasloi (symsymsym), Thursday, 19 May 2011 08:19 (fifteen years ago)

I realize a lot of people in this thread (and in most all of the tv threads) torrent these shows or wait until they air in the places they live, but commenting about an ad for a show shouldn't be considered improper behavior...even if you haven't seen or don't want to see the ad.

Johnny Fever, Thursday, 19 May 2011 08:20 (fifteen years ago)

xp That happens on NBC too. It almost NEVER affects my enjoyment of the show when it actually airs, though.

Johnny Fever, Thursday, 19 May 2011 08:21 (fifteen years ago)

can't believe someone spoilered parks and rec

BIG CUDDLES aka the steindriver (history mayne), Thursday, 19 May 2011 08:23 (fifteen years ago)

commenting about an ad for a show shouldn't be considered improper behavior...even if you haven't seen or don't want to see the ad.

you're assuming that (a) networks never spoil anything in ads and (b) everyone watches ads. btw commenting on something as it goes out live is fair game because everyone else knows to avoid the thread until they get around to watching it.

百万个叉烧包 (Autumn Almanac), Thursday, 19 May 2011 08:25 (fifteen years ago)

yo guys, I heard a major character DIES a the end of he season. Is that true, Johnny?

thats my meme dont were it out (Pillbox), Thursday, 19 May 2011 08:26 (fifteen years ago)

i.e. if I opened this thread in 18 hours' time and saw a comment about the just-aired death of tom haverford it'd be my own dumb fault for opening the thread

xp uh oh

百万个叉烧包 (Autumn Almanac), Thursday, 19 May 2011 08:27 (fifteen years ago)

the only people dying will be the folks at home DYING of LAUGHTER because this show is S0 EFFING HILARES

BIG CUDDLES aka the steindriver (history mayne), Thursday, 19 May 2011 08:45 (fifteen years ago)

this is the silliest argument.

try to enjoy the show tomorrow even though one sight gag has been revealed ahead of time everybody!

Clay, Thursday, 19 May 2011 08:50 (fifteen years ago)

nrq maybe just stay off the thread - you don't like the show, doesn't mean you have to be a morbs-on-colour-film/geir-on-rap-music dick about it.

WHO THE FUCK READS THE (a hoy hoy), Thursday, 19 May 2011 11:41 (fifteen years ago)

yeah this convo is ridic, lay off JF

also didn't this thread have spoilers about the episode with Ron in cornrows and nobody complained about that?

some dude, Thursday, 19 May 2011 12:12 (fifteen years ago)

wonder when 'threads about shows' became fans only, a place to write down funny lines from the episode as it happens... 30 rock i guess

BIG CUDDLES aka the steindriver (history mayne), Thursday, 19 May 2011 12:52 (fifteen years ago)

nah most TV threads aren't as precious as this one

some dude, Thursday, 19 May 2011 13:00 (fifteen years ago)

johnny fever otm, australians are babies, sorry guys, if you dont want to get spoilered move to the united states

ban drake (the rapper) (max), Thursday, 19 May 2011 13:51 (fifteen years ago)

I don't understand why AA is one of the people yelling at Johnny Fever when he posted the original spoiler being complained about to the thread...?

Re: ad spoilers

It's pretty well known that show runners/creators often have problems with what the network decides to reveal in the ads/promos for shows. I remember this being a big issue for Lost. So network ads can truly be spoilers--as can movie trailers, which usually give too much away.

Once an episode has actually aired, I believe the spoiler filter is off, because even people like me who never watch broadcast tv but instead watch the shows a day or two later on Hulu know to stay away from a message board thread just after real-time airing if they don't want to be spoiled.

If you want to post a link to the spoiler ad and give people the option of viewing it or not, I think that's cool, but don't just blurt it out.

President Keyes, Thursday, 19 May 2011 16:27 (fifteen years ago)

Why not just extend the "stay-away" period to a day or two before airing, rather than simply a day or two after? If the season finale's in 24 hours and you're particular about spoilers why not just hold out another 24 hours?

the littlest galáctico (boxall), Thursday, 19 May 2011 16:30 (fifteen years ago)

Will the World End in 2012?

seeing ^^^ revived and reading from this post after reading the argument here made me laugh a lot today

I HAVE ISSUES (DJP), Thursday, 19 May 2011 16:31 (fifteen years ago)

x-post

Every other message board has pretty clear rules about not doing spoilers up to the air time. Or they have "spoiler" and "spoiler-free" threads. Which we apparently can't be bothered with.

President Keyes, Thursday, 19 May 2011 16:39 (fifteen years ago)

Wish we had one of these.

Pleasant Plains, Thursday, 19 May 2011 16:42 (fifteen years ago)

nothing I tell you about that ad I saw will make it less funny when you actually see the scene.

not that I care about Parks & Rec spoilers or anything, but this statement is untrue! everything is funnier the first time you see it. especially when there's context the first time.

rockapads, Thursday, 19 May 2011 16:46 (fifteen years ago)

It's absolutely ridiculous to cry 'spoiler' when the information is in a promo for the show.

brotherlovesdub, Thursday, 19 May 2011 16:58 (fifteen years ago)

No it isn't. Keep fucking promos out of threads--they are created by network fools not show creators.

scott seward, Thursday, 19 May 2011 17:46 (fifteen years ago)

i don't even have anything to say. just stop cuz this is on tonight and we need P&R harmony.

scott seward, Thursday, 19 May 2011 17:47 (fifteen years ago)

Interesting:

Bill Hader's sketch group first practiced in Nick Offerman's workshop, of all places.

As turns out, it was Offerman's wife, Megan Mullally, who first told Lorne Michaels about Hader—who immediately phoned him and invited him out for an audition.

President Keyes, Thursday, 19 May 2011 18:10 (fifteen years ago)

people who dont want promos discussed in this thread should start their own thread and chillll out

ban drake (the rapper) (max), Thursday, 19 May 2011 18:58 (fifteen years ago)
