Shocked and angry, Peter shouts, "You're turning into a Nazi!" to which Thomas bluntly responds, "So what if I am?". Arvid suddenly realizes that there is no future for him in Germany and no hope of escape. He goes home and commits suicide in the bathtub, slitting his wrists with a broken record.

I remember having like 1st generation German guilt for finding Bale so hot in that movie too and making sure to emphasize to myself that I found him hottest before he became a Nazi.

Arvid! They cut off his fingers!
that movie is all about feeling guilty for finding christian bale as a hitler youth hot.

It was a good day to update the Albee thread while you guys are preoccupied with giants like Tony Gilroy, Lars von Trier, and whoever the fuck made Swing Kids.

i read that albee article btw, good stuff
Never got that into School Ties. Was probably too busy doing the Lindy alone in my bedroom or something.

matt damon is amazing as an evil antisemite in school ties tbh.

Is brenden fraiser in that? he's sort of creepy? I feel like there were naked boy butts at the beginning of it. This might be a false memory.
― \(^o\) (/o^)/ (ENBB), Wednesday, 18 May 2011 19:36 (thirteen years ago) link
yeah, brendan fraser. with the benefit of hindsight, he's totally creepy. there was nakedness!
― horseshoe, Wednesday, 18 May 2011 19:37 (thirteen years ago) link
i don't know how to feel about being totally played by the hot boys + antisemitism = young women will eat this shit up formula.
― horseshoe, Wednesday, 18 May 2011 19:38 (thirteen years ago) link
I really don't remember anything about School Ties. :( Maybe this is a good reason to rewatch all these. You know, to help bring clarification on this highly important and still totally relevant issue. Research, if you will.

i have a feeling i am going to be researching all of this very soon.

i'm going to read that who's afraid of virginia woolf article, too, morbz! <3
I just realized that Dr. Morbius has never seen any of "Sullivan's Travels" past the moment when Joel McCrea is arrested.
xp "School Ties" has Damon AND Affleck. And Amy Locane, remember her?

my friends and i also watched the shit out of a room with a view: rupert graves naked iirc

Since none of these movies were box office hits, how the hell did she learn about them?
Box office disappointments still get ads on TV, especially stations like MTV and Nickelodeon.

"You're quite a creepy person, aren't you?"
― buzza, Wednesday, 18 May 2011 19:48 (thirteen years ago) link
I don't get the "Sullivan's Travels" ref, Phil, because Albee is way funnier than LvT or satanic Al Pacino in this cockeyed caravan.

it's like that scene where greenberg screams for them to put rio back on except this time the party isn't at greenberg's house

x-posts - I do remember Amy Locane. Iirc she's Depp's preppy love interest in Cry Baby.
I now have one of the songs off the Swing Kids sndtrk stuck in my head. WHY DO I REMEMBER THE FREKIN' SONGS?! argh.

I liked Bourne Ultimatum a whole lot, but that's about it on this list, of the ones I've seen. Would love to love Michael Clayton, but that one and Dolores C. seemed too enamored of their lugubriousness.
I really enjoyed this interview with Gilroy, though:http://www.kcrw.com/etc/programs/tt/tt071010tony_gilroy

I read them all, you choad, AND reactivated the Visconti thread. Von Trier isn't much better than Gilroy, by the way.
