I didn't know Faulkner had been adapted to the screen this early -- does anybody have an opinion on The Story of Temple Drake (1933)? It's about to come on.

watching this right now and its fucking awesome!!!
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=R5e3ttvlymI
the "duovision" thing is srsly next level!!! weird that the trailer doesnt employ the same technique... but like, the entire movie is two shots in split screen. its like watching two cuts of the same same movie, showing two different views of the same plot the whole time
also it takes place at the hotel del corodano (sup, ned)
― (gr8080), Saturday, 17 September 2011 08:08 (fourteen years ago)
like the video to semisonic's "closing time" but instead of a band in one half of the screen its different shots of the scene in the other frame, or shots of what the characters in the other frame are talking about, or shots of someone on the other side of the hotel doing something sneaky.
i'm so into this!!
― (gr8080), Saturday, 17 September 2011 08:24 (fourteen years ago)

Hey I watched Wicked Wicked too -- it was pretty great! The stabber reminded me so much of Jeffrey Dahmer that I felt genuinely creeped out for a while. His mask was gross. The songs were also awesome.
Duovision kind of made me want to barf though, too overstimulating.

Gotta love those Earrings.

1944, Ingrid Bergman.
― Who wants to see the great Pavarotti sit on a pie? (jer.fairall), Sunday, 15 January 2012 00:36 (fourteen years ago)
s'okay, but the other one is better.
― Fotheringeir (James Redd and the Blecchs), Sunday, 15 January 2012 00:40 (fourteen years ago)
Anton Walbrook still has that Old World European reserve whereas Charles Boyer got a little hammy in Hollywood. He's great in Earrings... though

― Mordy, Friday, 13 April 2012 13:35 (fourteen years ago)
the beach party movies are (predictably) dumb. i think i was hoping for more and now i'm kinda wishing todd haynes made some kind of meticulously stylized pastiche version of a beach party movie that secretly explored in melodrama style the tensions undergirding the beach party movie conventions. seriously, tho, are any of these good enough to be worth watching? even the names sound interchangeable.
― Mordy, Thursday, 19 April 2012 02:17 (fourteen years ago)
They Live! and Escape from NY on tnite
― Mordy, Saturday, 5 May 2012 00:58 (fourteen years ago)
They Live is not without its own virtues, but it's mostly worth reading so you can know what's being talked about in Jonathan Lethem's awesome book on the film.
