Happy belated birthday. Now we know whose parents get busy in the fall, heh heh heh...

Me, too! Happy birthday, Martin.

Arthur, Monday, 10 June 2002 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Martin's parents get busy to The Fall? Well-uh HAPPY BIRTHDAY-UH MARTIN-UH!

Brian MacDonald, Monday, 10 June 2002 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Now we know whose parents get busy in the fall, heh heh heh...

You'll have to find them first - I was adopted. Total knowledge about my biological parents: she was an unmarried student nurse, he was a married surgeon.

Martin Skidmore, Monday, 10 June 2002 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Does your birthday celebrate the day you were born or the day you were adopted?

Dan Perry, Monday, 10 June 2002 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

'Birth'day contains a clue to that. I don't even know the day I was adopted. Sometime in the July, I believe.

Martin Skidmore, Tuesday, 11 June 2002 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

(For only $19.95 you too can learn Dan Perry's fearsome ability to ask mind-bogglingly stupid questions!)

CJ, I'm nervous about downloading things onto my PC. Can you reassure me?

Martin Skidmore (Martin Skidmore), Sunday, 8 June 2003 17:34 (twenty-three years ago)

don't worry, martin, I just checked. it definitely is a virus.

have a happy birthday.

RJG (RJG), Sunday, 8 June 2003 17:37 (twenty-three years ago)

Did someone say there was cake? Happy birthday! Where's the cake?

Lara (Lara), Sunday, 8 June 2003 17:44 (twenty-three years ago)

I had to buy cakes at work because it was my birthday. A dud tradition, as discussed elsewhere. Though I enjoyed eating more than my share.

Martin Skidmore (Martin Skidmore), Sunday, 8 June 2003 17:46 (twenty-three years ago)

That is a shocking tradition. We have to bring treats back if we go on a work trip abroad, which is totally dud as work trips involve being in 'work-android' mode for 16 hours a day when I'm only getting paid for eight. THEY SHOULD BE BUYING ME TREATS.

Hmm... so what presents did you get?

Lara (Lara), Sunday, 8 June 2003 17:48 (twenty-three years ago)

That sound clip is perfectly safe, Martin. It's never done anything nasty to anyone's computer (as far as I know). It's only a link to the site, anyway - it doesn't load anything onto your machine.

C J (C J), Sunday, 8 June 2003 17:58 (twenty-three years ago)

Happy birthday Martin, you old battle d'or

Tracer Hand (tracerhand), Sunday, 8 June 2003 18:09 (twenty-three years ago)

OK CJ - but when I went to the URL it did start downloading something, and I wasn't sure what.

We have to bring treats back from holidays too at work, but since I've not been on holiday in nearly three years (I brought back turkish delight from Istanbul, but it wasn't proper Turkish Delight like Fry's, they'd taken the chocolate off and covered it with powdery stuff!) it's not much of a problem. I got some CDs and comics, mainly (I was just playing the tATu album), plus a balloon snail (best balloon animal I've ever seen, for what that praise is worth) with 'HAPPY BIRTHDAY MARTIN' written on the side.

Martin Skidmore (Martin Skidmore), Sunday, 8 June 2003 19:05 (twenty-three years ago)

happy birthday, mr skidmore & the best balloon animal ever is well-deserved

Fritz Wollner (Fritz), Sunday, 8 June 2003 19:18 (twenty-three years ago)

Was thinking about him the other week.

Ned Raggett, Saturday, 8 June 2019 17:27 (seven years ago)

Was reading and chuckling at some early Krazy Kat Sundays earlier - the introduction to which I have him to thank for.

two years pass...

Martin's birthday. Still missing him. Can hear his voice in my head right now.

Tracer Hand, Wednesday, 8 June 2022 11:13 (four years ago)

That voice, by the way, can be found here:

Tracer Hand, Wednesday, 8 June 2022 13:06 (four years ago)

lol he hated that story

mark s, Wednesday, 8 June 2022 13:18 (four years ago)

yes :)

Tracer Hand, Wednesday, 8 June 2022 13:28 (four years ago)

Oh I'm glad that recording is still in circulation.

For all the time I knew Martin, I wasn't really into Science Fiction, so rarely talked with him about it. But I was lucky enough to inherit part of his SF book collection, and in the years since his death have made good progress reading those, plus lots more SF. And almost always, I wish I could talk to Martin about what I've just read. That's just one of the many things I miss.

Ward Fowler, Wednesday, 8 June 2022 14:12 (four years ago)

Truly a good fellow. Grateful to have stayed with him that one time, and truly a remarkable collection of many things he had, an ultimate library.

Ned Raggett, Wednesday, 8 June 2022 16:17 (four years ago)

two years pass...

Thinking of Martin today.

Humanitarian Pause (Tracer Hand), Saturday, 8 June 2024 08:12 (two years ago)

likewise

mark s, Saturday, 8 June 2024 09:56 (two years ago)

one year passes...

Still seeing his doughty smile, his wise gruff self deprecation. His vast hinterland of polygamous orgies and science fiction and japanese art.

Tracer Hand, Sunday, 8 June 2025 10:52 (one year ago)

❤️❤️❤️❤️

mark s, Sunday, 8 June 2025 10:55 (one year ago)

Very nice way to be remembered :)

xyzzzz__, Sunday, 8 June 2025 11:20 (one year ago)

There’s a big old school comics fan meet-up at the next London Comic Mart in a couple of weeks where I’m sure a glass and a toast will be raised in Martin’s memory - he is always missed.

Ward Fowler, Sunday, 8 June 2025 13:02 (one year ago)

Solid guy, a great host when I visited in 2003.
