Confirmation that even my wife, who has never read a sentence of the books, is hooked: at the final scene she shouted out, "we have to wait another WEEK for the next episode? Fuck you HBO". I lolled heartily, she has no idea what she is in store for.

The ending of this week's was pretty suspenseful, particularly for someone new to the story.

Very fun show.

The jousting scene was the BEST!

reggaeton for the painfully alone (polyphonic), Monday, 9 May 2011 17:38 (fifteen years ago)

^^^^ totally lived up to my expectation

and Catelyn's ambush in the tavern at the end played out beautifully

Samwell is A+, they cast him well. I love the wall boys so much.

ban drake (the rapper) (max), Monday, 9 May 2011 18:15 (fifteen years ago)

shit got pretty nuts at the end there

ban drake (the rapper) (max), Monday, 9 May 2011 18:16 (fifteen years ago)

soooo we're like halfway through the first book, yeah? -ish? should i bother to start reading? it seems long and i don't have ~that~ much free time.

kinda torn between wanting to know NOW exactly how ham it gets and savoring the madness as it unfolds.

btw found the HBO 'guide' to be v helpful in keeping track of who's who

cop a cute abdomen (gbx), Monday, 9 May 2011 18:20 (fifteen years ago)

also kinda dont want to read hundreds of pages of stuff i've just seen

cop a cute abdomen (gbx), Monday, 9 May 2011 18:20 (fifteen years ago)

if ur like me you will end up making free time to read it

ban drake (the rapper) (max), Monday, 9 May 2011 18:20 (fifteen years ago)

its kinda slow going at first but it really picks up ~200 pages in and its worth it even if youve already seen the tv show

ban drake (the rapper) (max), Monday, 9 May 2011 18:21 (fifteen years ago)

& its not exactly a "hard read" either, you could finish it over an intense weekend

ban drake (the rapper) (max), Monday, 9 May 2011 18:21 (fifteen years ago)

hmmmm

cop a cute abdomen (gbx), Monday, 9 May 2011 18:24 (fifteen years ago)

DO IT

Dreaded Burrito Gang (DJP), Monday, 9 May 2011 19:13 (fifteen years ago)

thing is, yer gonna wanna read the second book as soon as the first season of the tv show is over, so you'd better read the first book now so you don't miss anything small..

also, in the book during the jousting scene (from sansa's POV) Sir Hugh is just "some knight from the vale." and his death is less obviously diabolical.

one dis leads to another (ian), Monday, 9 May 2011 19:17 (fifteen years ago)

Didn't strike me as diabolical, but I'm guessing it's cuz the hand went asking questions?

cop a cute abdomen (gbx), Monday, 9 May 2011 19:23 (fifteen years ago)

i think u mean ser hugh

ban drake (the rapper) (max), Monday, 9 May 2011 19:23 (fifteen years ago)

Viserys Targaryen is growing on me a bit.

reggaeton for the painfully alone (polyphonic), Monday, 9 May 2011 19:24 (fifteen years ago)

I just finished book 1 on sunday...O_O

Found that reading along with the tv show sped me up, because I had a picture of everything, characters etc

HODOR

cum dude (Princess TamTam), Monday, 9 May 2011 20:09 (fifteen years ago)

I'd like to claim credit for this one, but actually my girlfriend noticed it(she's a fanatic about the books). If you look at the credits, particularly the animals engraved on the bands around the sun, you'll see that they tell the story of Robert Baratheon's war against the Mad King in Heraldic form... It's a nice geeky touch.

Stone Monkey, Monday, 9 May 2011 20:14 (fifteen years ago)

man I think reading might just be worth it to clarify things in the backstory. It took the HBO guide to figure out ~why~ the mad king killed the Starks and why Jaime Lannister wasn't really respected for icing the guy.

cop a cute abdomen (gbx), Monday, 9 May 2011 20:25 (fifteen years ago)

jaime is outright loathed and mocked for killing aerys iirc.

one dis leads to another (ian), Monday, 9 May 2011 20:44 (fifteen years ago)

the books are a little bit more expository but not much--you dont quite get the whole story of the uprising until midway through and even then its partial and in pieces

ban drake (the rapper) (max), Monday, 9 May 2011 20:50 (fifteen years ago)

Oh yeah they haven't played that up but every man's hand is against Jaime now, because Mad King or no Mad King, Jaime is an oathbreaker.

Back up the lesbian canoe (Laurel), Monday, 9 May 2011 20:50 (fifteen years ago)

Yeah Jaime's entire fame rests on the fact that he killed his king while he was a sworn member of that king's personal bodyguard. The king in question might have been mad, but that sort of thing is not going to give you a good name with anyone who hears about it. Anything else he does in the future is going to have to be pretty special if he's going to live that down.

Stone Monkey, Monday, 9 May 2011 20:53 (fifteen years ago)

yeah. i mean it took me until today to figure out that there WAS a king's guard, and that he was part of it (and why he wore that special armor). normally i'm pretty good about piecing together backstory, but the pace has been pretty quick and it's hard to keep up

cop a cute abdomen (gbx), Monday, 9 May 2011 21:10 (fifteen years ago)

read da books dog. you can always skim the parts you've seen if you get bored.

one dis leads to another (ian), Monday, 9 May 2011 21:18 (fifteen years ago)

evan you wont regret reading the books

ban drake (the rapper) (max), Monday, 9 May 2011 21:30 (fifteen years ago)

cop a cute abdomen (gbx), Monday, 9 May 2011 21:35 (fifteen years ago)

Aerosol, Monday, 9 May 2011 21:36 (fifteen years ago)

i do! im canceling ur vote aerosol

cum dude (Princess TamTam), Monday, 9 May 2011 21:37 (fifteen years ago)

All those pages? Come on man , just think this through

Aerosol, Monday, 9 May 2011 21:38 (fifteen years ago)

not going to read the books now because I like watching the TV show and having no idea what's coming.

I thought the way the king asked the lannister dude how he killed the mad king was pretty telling about the disdain that's felt towards him.

Gukbe, Monday, 9 May 2011 21:46 (fifteen years ago)

books are just gay tv programmes

cop a cute abdomen (gbx), Monday, 9 May 2011 22:28 (fifteen years ago)

this show has totally made me go back and pick up where i left off amidst book 4

difficult listening hour, Monday, 9 May 2011 23:09 (fifteen years ago)

when I first started in with the books I was bored with the endless description of the armor but then i got really into it. i think seeing the "Arms and Armor of the Habsburg Empire" traveling exhibit around the same time raised my interest.

also, the sumptuous meals described made very hungry

brownie, Monday, 9 May 2011 23:17 (fifteen years ago)
