on the evidence of this episode alone i would worry that tina fey is heading for a sorkin-style mushrooms-and-coke crash-and-burn.
― j., Saturday, 7 May 2011 01:40 (fifteen years ago)
Completely surreal episode.
lmao @ "GABBLE" instead of "GAVEL"this is 30 Rock, not Gigli

tina's not listed as a writer for the last episode
― mizzell, Saturday, 7 May 2011 19:58 (fifteen years ago)
i think hannibal's been a writer for a while, maybe all of this season?
― congratulations (n/a), Saturday, 7 May 2011 21:13 (fifteen years ago)

^^^ Took me several moments to grok that joke in its full splendor.
In other news, lots of wrongness here (i.e. didn't need to rebound from anything).

― jaymc, Monday, 9 May 2011 01:28 (fifteen years ago)
it's sad how much writing there is online about 30 Rock that's just dramatic handwringing about huge imaginary ups and downs in the quality of the show owing to guest stars or the handling of the Jack and Liz "relationship" or whatever.

Is the extra lol because he is diabetic and thus would have extra sugary pee?

― raggett doll, livin' in a rovi (some dude), Monday, 9 May 2011 01:57 (fifteen years ago)
I thought it was a one-level joke.
― crabbbittts (Abbbottt), Monday, 9 May 2011 01:58 (fifteen years ago)
That is why my explanation for a fully-grokkable next level is improbably gross! Also (warning: gross?) I just read a book about diabetics that had a little illustration of this 16th c doctor diagnosing by taste so it's on my mind.
― crabbbittts (Abbbottt), Monday, 9 May 2011 01:59 (fifteen years ago)
lol ditto xp
― Mordy, Monday, 9 May 2011 02:00 (fifteen years ago)
I think that is exactly the joke, btw. Baldwin was on Jimmy Fallon's show the other night, doing his Tracy impression, and said somthing to the effect of "my pee is so sweet I could piss on your pancakes."
― Johnny Fever, Monday, 9 May 2011 02:06 (fifteen years ago)
also guys hummingbirds look like this:

― cop a cute abdomen (gbx), Monday, 9 May 2011 02:35 (fifteen years ago)
yeah i thought the joke was just about a hummingbird levitating over a penis & drinking out of it

― NoShoutsNoCalls (Leee), Tuesday, 10 May 2011 01:45 (fifteen years ago)
More incorrectness.
However, I'm beginning to wonder if the posters on this thread are comedy formalists, and the people saying bemoaning the show are approaching it a lot more directly on the grounds of content... which I want to respect on a general basis, but I think it's terribly inappropriate for something that can get as extravagantly surreal as 30 Rock. Also, this debate kind of reminds me the question about The Simpsons and heart.
― NoShoutsNoCalls (Leee), Saturday, 14 May 2011 22:19 (fifteen years ago)
matt yglesias should stick to writing about politics frankly

― k3vin k., Sunday, 15 May 2011 00:09 (fifteen years ago)
the difference with The Simpsons is it actually did have a rather pronounced sentimental streak in its early seasons. 30 Rock got a little loonier over time but there's not really any kind of emotional core that's minimized or abandoned. also, i started renting season 1 recently and man the show has gotten so much tighter and faster since then, it almost feels a little sluggish by comparison.
― I may be banned but I'm perfectly good at it (some dude), Sunday, 15 May 2011 00:48 (fifteen years ago)
yeah I had that exact reaction when I watched season 1 again at some point. "this is so slow!" I love the speed so much.
― T.S. Eliot-themed roach fetish porn (silby), Sunday, 15 May 2011 13:57 (fifteen years ago)
Seems like 30 Rock isn't coming back until midseason :(
― The Brainwasher, Sunday, 15 May 2011 18:20 (fifteen years ago)
Is it totally out of the question that viewers may have glommed onto the show because of its characterizations and traditional sitcom tropes in addition to the jokes? I'm trying to give the ideological critics (e.g. the people who think that Liz was getting humiliated for lolz) the benefit of a doubt, even though my gut sez that they're mythologizing the origins of the show and simply don't remember laughter.
