Firefox IE Tab add-on just saved us from a load of hassle tonight - upgraded to IE9 this week and our British Gas Top Up wouldn't work any more because it ONLY works in IE6-8. And we'd run out of gas, and my wife was in the middle of washing her hair. All the shops I know of with a top up machine are closed by now, and I can't seem to find a way of installing IE8 on Windows 7. Found some dude's blog post of how to get around it using Firefox and we have hot water again. This seems like a first world problem?

Seems like a predictable Microsoft dumb shit problem tbh
From what I can tell it offers to let through all scripts by default. The single biggest concern I have about that sentence is the "from what I can tell" part. Also, it demands that you set a 20+ letter password in a text file. A TEXT FILE.

To be fair to Microsoft, I think it's British Gas with the problem. I'm pretty sure there is no reason why the page has to be rendered with IE6-8 other than British Gas's shitty software checks the browser version and won't proceed otherwise. I guess could've tried spoofing the user-agent or something but I'm no expert at HTTP programming so just installing a FF add-on was a great solution.

Oh yeah, I know what you mean. 'er indoors uses the Weight Watchers points tracker (she's not overweight fyi coz she uses weight watchers ^__^) which until a few months ago would only run on IE and Netscape. NETSCAPE. We don't have Windows at home so I had to add a user agent to Chrome just so she could access the thing that she pays $40/mth for.

for some reason i can no longer edit/print/work with google docs in firefox - it lets me open the docs but tells me there's a browser error and i need to refresh, except that doesn't do anything.

Been using FF4 at work, didn't seem to be horrible so now I've finally installed it at home if only for quicker startup. One thing I don't like though, is that pressing F6 doesn't take you directly to the address bar anymore (it takes you to the tab bar, from which you can tab to the address bar).

So do I, but sometimes I only have one hand to type with and there's no real way for me to finish this sentence in a way that's not perved.
― Doctoral Who (Leee), Saturday, 28 May 2011 18:03 (fifteen years ago)
i checked for updates the other day and it recommended FF5 Beta. recommending a beta over the current stable version is a bit odd imo. (but given it's on my windows partition i won't ever use it!)

Upgraded kind of by accident and one slightly weird thing is that Google home page appears without Doodle. How to rectify?

OK, this "Switch to tab" thing is pretty neat.

Doodle has finally appeared for Les Paul's birthday. Thing crashes on a nightly basis though.

http://www.computerworld.com/s/article/9217813/Mozilla_ships_Firefox_5_holds_to_new_rapid_release_plan
"Although the company said it added more than 1,000 improvements to the browser, most were minor bug fixes or tweaks. Among the most significant changes were enhanced support for HTML5 and new support for CSS (cascading style sheet) animations.
Firefox 5's user interface is nearly identical to Firefox 4, for instance."
doesn't sound essential although it pretty much insisted i upgrade this morning (and then failed to connect to the upgrade server...)
― koogs, Wednesday, 22 June 2011 08:42 (fourteen years ago)
Pretty much as essential as any point release, this really should've been 4.1 - security fixes are enough to get the upgrade, though I can't think of a single site that uses WebGL. They're considering the major release numbers to be 3.6 and 5, I believe.
― Nhex, Wednesday, 22 June 2011 13:12 (fourteen years ago)
Is it as crashy as 4, bc this shit is driving me up the wall
― Janet Snakehole (VegemiteGrrl), Wednesday, 22 June 2011 13:14 (fourteen years ago)
hasn't crashed in the 4 hours i've been using it, but then i never had any trouble with 4.
yes, they've adopted the chrome technique of uping the major number every 6 months. just because bigger numbers look like the thing has more of a history. it's all hype. (and is causing the plugin developers a headache apparently)
― koogs, Wednesday, 22 June 2011 13:29 (fourteen years ago)
That's a good point, Koogs. It's the biggest downside of all these new upgrades, constantly being confronted with addons that aren't working anymore. This is bugging me to no end.
Other than that, unlike Vegemitegrrl, FF 4 has been more stable for me than its predecessors.

― Janet Snakehole (VegemiteGrrl), Wednesday, 22 June 2011 22:46 (fourteen years ago)
skipped 4, went straight to 5
feels a little faster, but it takes like 10 seconds (and sends firefox to using 50% of cpu) to load gmail, which is weird and bad
― mookieproof, Wednesday, 22 June 2011 23:03 (fourteen years ago)
5 doesn't load for me. I had to downgrade to 3.6.

If you have firefox crashes, try making a new profile. Backup your bookmarks, take a note of your addons, google firefox profile manager on how to proceed in detail (I don't know by heart, mine doesn't crash)
― StanM, Thursday, 23 June 2011 02:14 (fourteen years ago)
^ thought they recommended this for every major upgrade, even
― StanM, Thursday, 23 June 2011 02:16 (fourteen years ago)
at work i appear to have 4 copies of each bookmark (not adjacent to each other so i never see the bottom 3 copies unless i scroll (and scroll and scroll) down).
ubuntu lucid is still on 3.6 and you don't get the option to upgrade until the package is upgraded (you can install it separately but it's a hassle)
― koogs, Thursday, 23 June 2011 07:23 (fourteen years ago)
Is there any reason that, with Firefox 5, there's a different font that appears on this site?
― EDB, Thursday, 23 June 2011 12:06 (fourteen years ago)
could be the html5 kicking in (if you upgraded from 3). i've noticed a different default font (smaller, serif) in text input boxes (but not here) and rounded corners on the Add a Post box.
