i take pics when i make pretty food at home, but i've never whipped out the camera at a restaurant.

still, jbr's food pics make me mad jealous of the fine cuisine of which she often partakes!

tres letraj (tehresa), Sunday, 4 December 2005 05:47 (eighteen years ago) link

my saturday night consisted of drinking beer and eating tacos and watching movies and realizing someone had moved my cellphone during food prep into a big wet spot on the kitchen counter which proceeded to seep into the battery casing and render it inoperable >>>:-X

i don't partake of "fine cuisine" that often actually; i used to a lot more but i've been kind of a hermit this past year.

i am drinking the rest of the beer i stole from the fridge before i left. it serves those bastards right for putting me out anywhere between $40-150. so, yes.

i am usually very anti-mixing, which is why i hardly ever do shots -- BUT last night, i had one beer, then a glass and a half of wine, and then a few more beers, and i was fine.

Liquor before beer, never fear.
Beer before liquor, never sicker.

yeah, don't know about wine though.

I am *a bit* of a foodie -- I like good food and I like seeking out new foods and new places to eat -- but my gfs dad is severely obsessive. Nothing was more castrating than having him judge our shortage of good cooking utencils.

Abbadabba Berman (Hurting), Sunday, 4 December 2005 06:05 (eighteen years ago) link

haha that's ok... my dad gives a full report of every meal when he returns from business trips!

I don't know a lot of people who seem to take pictures of what they and their dining companions eat as much as you do.

i know, it's totally weird and nobody does it.

xpost Heehee, my gfs brother was just complaining about the exact exact same thing before his dad got here. He was doing an imitation of his dad going on and on about some place in Quebec City (where he goes frequently on business) that had "good simple food."

Once, on a visit to North Carolina where the gfs parents live now, while my gf and her mom were shopping, her dad took me into Williams Sonoma and literally took me shelf by shelf, telling me something about everything in the entire store -- (in thick Israeli accent) "This... this... this is the BEST porcelain like you have only in 3-star Michelin restaurant in France... these knifes, they are German knives, HIGHEST quality! But...but the Japanese have killed them now...this is Le Creuset, it is the BEST! It is like a dream to own an entire set of Le Creuset ..."

Jody, don't get so defensive, geez! I just said I don't personally know anyone else who does it as much.

Abbadabba Berman (Hurting), Sunday, 4 December 2005 06:14 (eighteen years ago) link

xpost My gfs dad will give you a detailed description of SUBWAY and how even though it's not really any good he considers it the best food when you have nothing else to eat. And he'll tell you this again the next time he sees you.

Miss Misery, I miss Austin in-stores. Was it Waterloo, or some new place?

Here in DC, you can barely get a decent breakfast taco, let alone an in-store. Instead, it's been pizza, booze, and Young Adam, since it's too cold to go out.

Stephen X (Stephen X), Sunday, 4 December 2005 06:27 (eighteen years ago) link

bottom line: i think cooking and food presentation are interesting. i also think photography is fun, and i want to get better at it, and (amateur) food photography is a relatively easy way to practice, esp. in low-light settings like restaurants.

i'm really honestly surprised that ilx has such deep-seated issues with looking at pictures of food. it says more about you guys than it does about me. sheesh, it's not like i'm not posting images of 13-year-old girls.

sigh.

The Great Pagoda of Funn (Jody Beth Rosen), Sunday, 4 December 2005 06:28 (eighteen years ago) link

tres letraj (tehresa), Sunday, 4 December 2005 06:37 (eighteen years ago) link

I never said I didn't like them myself.

Abbadabba Berman (Hurting), Sunday, 4 December 2005 06:37 (eighteen years ago) link

Hey I never had any problems with pictures of food as long as it isn't meat! I went to the store and got meself a nice raspberry chocolate tart thingy to which I added fat free whipped cream and thawed organic raspberries. I feel so happy now. And I haven't finished the damn wine yet.

this all goes back to chris's july 4 photo thread from a few years ago. people didn't want to look at any pictures from that weekend that didn't include drunk ilxors making stupid faces.

The Great Pagoda of Funn (Jody Beth Rosen), Sunday, 4 December 2005 06:40 (eighteen years ago) link

My mom sent me a package of Omaha Steaks last week and that was what we made, along with oven-roasted potatoes that came out fantastic. They seem like good steaks, but the whole shipping meat through the mail thing is a little weird (even with dry ice) and a couple of them appeared to be slightly discolored.

We also bought a peach-raspberry pie from the new gourmet store in town which was great but a tad too sweet.

Abbadabba Berman (Hurting), Sunday, 4 December 2005 06:43 (eighteen years ago) link

i've had omaha steaks. the filet mignons (filets mignon?) were pretty lifeless, but i remember the burgers being good.

The Great Pagoda of Funn (Jody Beth Rosen), Sunday, 4 December 2005 06:44 (eighteen years ago) link

Stephen, this was at Sound On Sound on North Loop. While Waterloo is likely to have a Bob Schneider instore the road bands and punk acts play at Sound on Sound.

JBR, I got tired of looking at pictures period. At least ones where people were in it were interesting but picture after picture of plates of food got really boring really fast. I'm not trying to be rude b/c, truly, switching images off has been one of my best ILX experiences ever. I enjoy this place so much more now that I can pick and choose my images.

Miss Misery xox (MissMiseryTX), Sunday, 4 December 2005 06:46 (eighteen years ago) link

xpost Yeah, that's exactly how I'd describe the filet mignons we had -- good word for it. The ribeyes were tastier though.

Abbadabba Berman (Hurting), Sunday, 4 December 2005 06:46 (eighteen years ago) link

Earlier in the evening I did have a fun band practice though -- we wrote a kind of deliberate Talking Heads parody (which is very unlike us) that included the lyrics "Maybe I'll go downtown. Maybe I'll go downtown in my gym shorts."

Abbadabba Berman (Hurting), Sunday, 4 December 2005 06:48 (eighteen years ago) link

see, i usually can't stand looking at drunken party photos. i find them incredibly obnoxious, everyone mugging for the camera and looking ghoulish. fapping is fun, hanging out with friends is fun, but... bleah. those pics are never ever flattering.

not that others shouldn't enjoy them, of course.

The Great Pagoda of Funn (Jody Beth Rosen), Sunday, 4 December 2005 06:53 (eighteen years ago) link
