I went to the Apple store today and got a fresh iPhone since mine had one of those little cracks in it. Went well.

Genius is great, it just doesn't work yet.
So, it's basically NNW then?

haha. amazing that pretty much the very first third-party app is still essentially useless.
― s1ocki, Monday, 15 September 2008 05:02 (seventeen years ago)
at least for my purposes (which include using it)
It was good before this last revision.
― You touched me officer, sorry (Autumn Almanac), Monday, 15 September 2008 06:53 (seventeen years ago)
so. upgraded to 2.1 ... and the backup during the first sync took longer than ever before.
― grimly fiendish, Monday, 15 September 2008 11:12 (seventeen years ago)
Do another. Mine's dead quick now.
― You touched me officer, sorry (Autumn Almanac), Monday, 15 September 2008 11:12 (seventeen years ago)
Backup times seem to be proportional to the amount of "stuff" that occurs on your iPhone since the last sync. What "stuff" takes longer than not is the question. Otherwise, it's better to backup often than never, especially for appaddicts like myself, so get used to it or get something else instead.

Also having mild fun with Spore Origins, and killing time with Asphalt 4 (which is a pretty average game, but a pretty great tech demo, frame rate issues aside).

what exactly does backup, back up?
― s1ocki, Wednesday, 17 September 2008 14:27 (seventeen years ago)
Backup stuff is explained here. What it backed up pre 2.1 was different to what it backs up now, post 2.1.
― JimD, Wednesday, 17 September 2008 14:30 (seventeen years ago)
my iphone is still essentially broken when it comes to updating or installing new apps. really fucking annoying.

GymGoal Lite is fantastic. It provides detailed descriptions of just about every weights exercise you can think of, including correct techniques and pictures. It also offers a load of workout programmes based on your selection (days in a split, weights/pulleys, etc.) and gives you a log to record it all in. Now that both my trainers are completely unreliable and shit I will give this a try.

http://www.apple.com/support/usbadapter/exchangeprogram/
Today Apple announced the Apple Ultracompact USB Power Adapter Exchange program.
Apple has determined that under certain conditions the new ultracompact Apple USB power adapter's metal prongs can break off and remain in a power outlet, creating a risk of electric shock. We have received reports of detached blades involving a very small percentage of the adapters sold, but no injuries have been reported.
The ultracompact USB power adapters were supplied with every iPhone 3G sold in the following countries, and may also have been purchased separately as an accessory:
* US * Japan * Canada * Mexico * Several Latin American countries (click here for a detailed list of countries)
Note: Apple USB power adapters supplied with original iPhones or supplied with iPhone 3G units sold in other countries are not affected.
Customer safety is always Apple's top priority, and therefore we have voluntarily decided to exchange every ultracompact power adapter for a new, redesigned adapter, free of charge.
Users with ultracompact power adapters should immediately stop using them until they exchange them for a new, redesigned ultracompact adapter...

I with they would implement folders on here. I'd like an area where i can stick specific document-related apps. For example, they have e-books as individual apps, also stuff like the American Constitution, Decl. of Indepedence, various Bibles, the Qur'an, etc.
Call it something like iBookshelf or whatevers.

Why can't I directly download podcasts onto this thing?
― You are wrong (Autumn Almanac), Tuesday, 23 September 2008 11:18 (seventeen years ago)
Because providers would be irritated by the additional huge data use, 3g is slow and unreliable for large file transfers, and it eats battery?

WIFI
― s1ocki, Tuesday, 23 September 2008 16:31 (seventeen years ago)
Yeah. itunes only works on wi-fi anyway, so why not let it do podcasts then as well?
― You are wrong (Autumn Almanac), Tuesday, 23 September 2008 20:36 (seventeen years ago)
They even went to the trouble of rejecting an iphone podcast app because it 'duplicated functionality'. Not only are there laws in place against that kind of thing (hello Microsoft ongoing European court case), it doesn't duplicate shit.
― You are wrong (Autumn Almanac), Tuesday, 23 September 2008 20:38 (seventeen years ago)
I thought they meant it duplicated the iTMS store, but now they've banned a GMail client for duplicating the mail app, which is some bullshit.
― /-\|/-\|/-\ (stet), Tuesday, 23 September 2008 20:57 (seventeen years ago)
There must be repercussions. The way the app store is handled is crap to begin with (two-week delays in getting software on the site?), but when you start knocking people back at the very last minute, you're asking for a crap reputation.
The whole process is new, so perhaps Apple just needs time to sort itself out. But perhaps it's just Apple being a penis.
― You are wrong (Autumn Almanac), Tuesday, 23 September 2008 21:01 (seventeen years ago)
And devs STILL can't communicate with one another due to the ridiculous NDAs they're all forced to sign.

http://www.fastcompany.com/big-idea/android-google-s-new-phone-will-force-apple-unlock-its-iphone-within-6-months?partner=rss
September 25, 2008
G1, the new phone using Google's Android OS, will force Apple to unlock its iPhone within 6 months. - Inspired by David PogueGoogle’s new cell phone, a potential competitor to the iPhone, has the tech world all abuzz. While most seem to think the Android doesn’t stand a chance at outshining its Apple made counterpart, one thing that may negatively impact iPhone sales is the Android’s relative openness.
Writes David Pogue: “Android, and the G1, are open. Open, open, open, in ways that would make Steve Jobs cringe. You can unlock this phone after 90 days—that is, use any SIM card from any carrier in it. The operating system is free and open-source, meaning that any company can make changes without consulting or paying Google. The App store is completely open, too; T-Mobile and Google say they won’t censor programs that they don’t approve of, as Apple does with the iPhone store. Yes, even if someone writes a Skype-like program that lets people avoid using up T-Mobile cellular voice minutes.
Android is not as beautiful or engaging as the iPhone’s software, but it’s infinitely superior to Windows Mobile—and it’s open. The G1 is only the first phone to use it, the first of many; it’s going to be an exciting ride.”

Next question - what about ringtones? The only thing I've found to let me change from/add to apple's pre-installed ringtones is the iTunes function to create a ringtone from a song (which I must have purchased from the iTunes store). Am I missing something obvious?
― mitya, Sunday, 28 September 2008 11:18 (seventeen years ago)
Yeah. You can cut an ordinary song down to 30 seconds, rename it to .m4r and drag it into the Ringtones section of itunes.

Sweet, thx! Next question -- MMSes (like SMS/texts but with some kind of imbedded media, usually pictures). Not possible? The only option I'm getting is to email photos, but I want to send them to people's phones.
