Alas.
Several of the writers are quitting because the hours were insane. Other than a three act story, there was no consistent template to the show, so every episode had a week to be conceived and executed from scratch, almost as if we were doing a pilot each week. I still owe my girlfriend an anniversary because I was in the edit bay working on Halloween. My girlfriend can justify it, because she knows how rare and important this opportunity is, and if the show sells in syndication, we get super rich, but imagine being someone that's not getting paid any more to write my show than they would get paid to write Glee, where everyone's clearly home by 5. Imagine having husbands and children and fiances, and coming home at 3am, and when they ask why it took so long, the answer is "Dan decided at eleven pm that it needed to be like The Matrix, not like Popeye." I have no doubt that the writers that worked on season 2 of Community worked harder than any writing staff in the world (so did the cast and crew, but that wasn't your question). I also think they will be proud of the work they did for the rest of their lives.

Even if there's big writer turnover on Community, I trust Harmon to hire another batch of good ones. More people get jobs and the concepts stay fresh!

'where everyone's clearly home by 5', ha

I'm sorry about my in-and-outness, trust me, this format will have me coming back for a while, typing about how smart I am to smart people kind of trumps minecraft, but what trumps it all is I am trying to assemble a writing staff of geniuses for season 3 and the only way to do that is to read A LOT OF scripts.
haaaa

I'm not sure if that quote about season 2 makes me feel better or worse about how up-and-down I've found it to be. It does seem to be a "higher highs, lower lows" situation.
― Jouster, Tuesday, 26 April 2011 08:15 (fifteen years ago)
except Modern Warfare and the chicken fingers episodes, those are still my favorites.
(Does anyone else kinda hate how inscrutable the episode titles are? I mean, they make sense if you think about them, but seeing them in a list format is basically useless)
― Jouster, Tuesday, 26 April 2011 08:22 (fifteen years ago)

The bit about fat Neil and the other girl talking about how awesome it was the week they were gone was great! Also love the continued reference to an episode that didn't happen!

I'm a bit dense but I didn't catch this? Could you explain?
― she started dancing to that (Finefinemusic), Friday, 29 April 2011 13:30 (fifteen years ago)
During last week's "clip" epsidoe they kept flashing to stuff they did that was never actually aired as part of the show - a fishing trip on St. Patrick's Day, the Habitat for Humanity thing, etc. Last night Fat Neil referenced how great it was when the Jeff and Britta group was gone on that St. Patrick's Day fishing trip since finally one class session wasn't all about them.

missed this because I was working late and my wife was watching William & Kate biographies
note to self: adjust DVR schedule

Yeah, they finally stopped leaning on the way-tired "Chang is pathetic" schtick and let him be awesome.

See, I liked that way more than the ref-heavy eps - this week's AV Club write-up (they switched around the writing staff for a "second opinion" period) nails why I've been having a hard time w/ it lately.
Grumbling aside, bring on the motherfucking paintball.

― da croupier, Friday, 29 April 2011 17:36 (fifteen years ago)
actually, Harmon himself acknowledged the show needs a certain amount of tweaking somewhere in that reddit thing, but I can't be arsed to find it.
― Simon H. Shit (Simon H.), Friday, 29 April 2011 17:42 (fifteen years ago)
wow you mean he doesn't think it's beyond improvement
― da croupier, Friday, 29 April 2011 17:42 (fifteen years ago)
the guy also said on reddit he thought the writers on season 2 will be proud of their work for the rest of their lives so i wouldn't read too much into him feeling the show needs "tweaking"
― da croupier, Friday, 29 April 2011 17:48 (fifteen years ago)
I was just sayin', Harmon seems to have a healthy sense of perspective, he's not one of those perpetual self-defenders. I appreciate that he's so open about every aspect of what goes into making a network sitcom.
― Simon H. Shit (Simon H.), Friday, 29 April 2011 17:57 (fifteen years ago)
Totally, though looking at his Twitter, he's perpetually telling people who think the show isn't kicking ass to fuck off
