d00dz - is there an app that will automatically put me into airplane mode after, say, 30 seconds of failing to find a signal?

Photosynth is fun. This is my first successful panorama. It's the view from my building's front door, and of the building itself. And my foot. http://photosynth.net/view.aspx?cid=a0501e97-3dda-4288-9bd8-96bedc1f998d

Not an app question, but who has experience with on-the-go rechargers? Right now I'm looking at Duracell's Instant and Powerhouse chargers, which are in essence Li-Ion battery packs with USB ports attached, and they are also built to spec for iPods/iPhones (which have weird circuitry that don't work w/ a lot of portable USB chargers). I mean, it'd be nice to find one that takes AA or AAA's, but I don't think they even really exist or work well w/ iPhones. Any tips?

Google Reader's page on Safari has never refreshed without my making it do so, even when I leave Safari to switch apps or not use the phone. I've been trying different things to make it refresh of its own volition but it's not doing it.

I was thinking about this conversation today, and I should clarify that I would experience the random refreshes when switching between safari "tabs", not using multi-tasking to switch between applications. My original post did not indicate this.

Jeff, Tuesday, 10 May 2011 22:08 (fifteen years ago)

Hey Stevie. I've no experience with the Duracell chargers (though they seem to be well-reviewed) but your post has just reminded me I need something for Glastonbury. Was previously just thinking of taking my old Sony Ericsson, which lasts for days, but now you've inspired me to order one of these monsters:

Alba, Tuesday, 10 May 2011 22:26 (fifteen years ago)

I believe the refreshing has to do with Safari has a limited cache space..used to drive me nuts so I use a feed reader now. Forget the name so I'll post this then check!

byline is my #1 fav app

iatee, Wednesday, 11 May 2011 02:18 (fifteen years ago)

I don't have a dataplan so I just dl my whole reader feed and read it in the subway / wherever

iatee, Wednesday, 11 May 2011 02:18 (fifteen years ago)

Pretty much should never use Safari when you can use an app.

stars on 45 my destination (James Redd and the Blecchs), Wednesday, 11 May 2011 03:20 (fifteen years ago)

Since posting that, Safari has refreshed my Reader feed a couple times, but it hasn't been a problem for me since if I see something I want to read later, I just uncheck Mark As Read.

Any recommendation on a good podcast app? I don't listen to any podcasts currently and haven't for years, so I'm not even sure what I'm looking for in an app. Except that I want it to automatically update and store podcasts or something like that.

a giant and leaky bag of mayhem (Jesse), Wednesday, 11 May 2011 15:07 (fifteen years ago)

itunes

caek, Wednesday, 11 May 2011 15:10 (fifteen years ago)

You can just iTunes to manage podcasts, you don't need an app for it.

However, if you do want an app, instacast is nice.

Jeff, Wednesday, 11 May 2011 15:11 (fifteen years ago)

Oh. OK. Thanks. Bye.

a giant and leaky bag of mayhem (Jesse), Wednesday, 11 May 2011 15:13 (fifteen years ago)

I got instacast but I'm still not sure what exactly it does

licorice oratorio (baaderonixx), Wednesday, 11 May 2011 15:55 (fifteen years ago)

Manages podcasts.

Jeff, Wednesday, 11 May 2011 15:59 (fifteen years ago)

I use Downcaster, does pretty much everything I need.

What do people thing is the best way to access google reader on the iphone right now?

American Fear of Pranksterism (Ed), Monday, 23 May 2011 22:27 (fifteen years ago)

Reeder app, by a mile.

After going through a half-dozen of these, I went back to using Safari and connecting directly to the mobile version of reader.google.com. The dedicated apps are just too slow, too buggy, or designed for people who subscribe to < 50 feeds.

Also, is it too difficult for ANYONE to include feed management (subscribe/unsubscribe, etc.) in their apps?

Stockhausen's Ekranoplan Quartet (Elvis Telecom), Monday, 23 May 2011 22:46 (fifteen years ago)

reeder has gotten slow but it still gets a vote from me.
i would use elvis' suggestion, except offline reading is essential.

harlan, Monday, 23 May 2011 22:50 (fifteen years ago)

Instapaper, then? I'm a cheapskate so I use Feedler, which is nice for costing $0

I Like Fuck (Stevie D(eux)), Monday, 23 May 2011 23:06 (fifteen years ago)

Reeder for Mac has just got feed management, so I guess it'll be in the next iPhone version.

stet, Monday, 23 May 2011 23:30 (fifteen years ago)

Still happiest w/ the mobile site on Safari.

Any free text app recommendations would be appreciated. TextPlus is not great - very slow and clunky.

Jesse, Tuesday, 24 May 2011 00:44 (fifteen years ago)

I haven't noticed any slowdown in reeder and I subscribe to 143 feeds.

Jeff, Tuesday, 24 May 2011 01:00 (fifteen years ago)

Crazy not to use reeder I say. When is the mac version coming out?

iatee, Monday, 27 June 2011 03:52 (fourteen years ago)

im seriously considering jail breaking my 3gs but im scared too. however i also don't want to pay $45 a month for a hotspot. A woman at my work did hers recently. She said ATT are supposedly trying to keep an eye on bandwidth used for this reason but they aren't trying too hard. noone she knows has been busted

There's a new Kairosoft game out, FYI. Same folks who did GameDev Story. I like their games since you can run these little 16-bit pixel-art isometric worlds an b/c they're addicting as all hell

Synthcam is an intriguing free photography app.

http://itunes.apple.com/us/app/synthcam/id412992079?mt=8

Uses the video camera to create creative blur/fake bokeh as well as providing a way to take low-noise photos in low light.

I'm still getting the hang of it but already have some interesting results.
