Shakey Mo Collier (Shakey Mo Collier), Thursday, 17 August 2006 20:54 (nineteen years ago)

Walk up to Sutter and Jones and go to Canteen - for breakfast, lunch, or dinner. It's the best restaurant in the city. I had a great lunch there yesterday (Garabanzo bean soup with poached egg, and a Rock Cod sandwich, with made-to-order (!!) root beer) for about $15.

schwantz (schwantz), Thursday, 17 August 2006 20:55 (nineteen years ago)

But dinner requires reservations...

schwantz (schwantz), Thursday, 17 August 2006 20:55 (nineteen years ago)

I'm sorry but the title of "best restaurant in the city" goes to In-N-Out Hamburger.

Steve Shasta (Steve Shasta), Thursday, 17 August 2006 20:57 (nineteen years ago)

Bocadillos is also really near where you are - fancy tapas. Piperade is a few blocks away (killer Basque food).

schwantz (schwantz), Thursday, 17 August 2006 20:57 (nineteen years ago)

I want to go to a Japanese restaurant with phil-two -- a restaurant with very attractive but demure staff.

youn (youn), Thursday, 17 August 2006 22:01 (nineteen years ago)

phil, rachel is in town for a week or so.

jaxon (jaxon), Thursday, 17 August 2006 22:22 (nineteen years ago)

gee, the weather here is so mild. kinda windy too. i only brought like 1 long sleeve shirt, and that green velvet jacket and the rest short sleeve.

thanks for the recommendation. the pho was so tasty and had tripe in it. yum.

i ended up getting a room at the hilton for $72 on priceline, which was only $3 more than the grant plaza - some dumpy place in chinatown. what a steal. i spent today going to expensive shops pretending to almost buy things. tried on a $3000 suit and toyed with the louis vuitton salesperson by almost putting my name on the waitlist for that ridiculous gold watersnake / leopard print / LV monogrammed bag thats like $4500.

youn, you live in SF?

jaxon, you guys goig out? i think im gonna try to go to tubesteak tonite or, uh, popscene. then the blowup tomorrow.

polyphonic, i guess im not a burrito fan in general. i'd rather have a taco or tostada or something without big mounds of rice in it. where good taco here?

ok!! see you later

Phil, I would have loved to have met you, but am, alas, domestically oriented this evening in preparation for sojourn to Tahoe this weekend.

M. White (Miguelito), Friday, 18 August 2006 01:35 (nineteen years ago)

Ahhh drats! Next time I guess. Have fun in Tahoe.

BTW, my friend is putting together the Vice Guide to SF so if anyone wants to contribute, lemme know. She need suggestions on where to drink, eat, bowl, dance, bingo, karaoke, gay bars, etc. The weirder the better.

phil-two (phil-two), Friday, 18 August 2006 01:57 (nineteen years ago)

How long are you in town?

M. White (Miguelito), Friday, 18 August 2006 02:05 (nineteen years ago)

tuesday morning/afternoon im driving down to LA

phil-two (phil-two), Friday, 18 August 2006 02:08 (nineteen years ago)

I may have to console a friend about a moribund cat on Monday, but if you're anywhere downtown (I work 3 blocks from your hotel) around four on Monday, I'd be glad to buy you a quick drink.

M. White (Miguelito), Friday, 18 August 2006 02:39 (nineteen years ago)

phil, if you're still around, rachel and friends are going to Popscene tonight. i'm home. not into indie-schmindie crap. she's here for a wedding saturday. i'm hanging w/the inlaws tomorrow night, but have no plans yet saturday.

jaxon (jaxon), Friday, 18 August 2006 04:26 (nineteen years ago)

Pretty much everywhere they have burritos, they have tacos. And you can get them however you want for them if you ask.

polyphonic (polyphonic), Friday, 18 August 2006 06:40 (nineteen years ago)

As far as the Vice Guide goes, Tulan is the best cheap vietnamese place in the city. It's in a particularly lovely part of the Tenderloin.

ahh, hm, i dunno where i'll be at four on monday yet, but i'll post here if i'm around. my friend has a car that day and we were thinking of driving around to wine places, or something. it would be great to meet you though!

phil-two (phil-two), Friday, 18 August 2006 19:42 (nineteen years ago)

I'm gonna be in San Fran tomorrow. What's Blow-Up?

And how is this owl-themed dive bar?

Mary (Mary), Friday, 18 August 2006 19:54 (nineteen years ago)

"owl themes dive bar"?

Shakey Mo Collier (Shakey Mo Collier), Friday, 18 August 2006 19:54 (nineteen years ago)

The Owl Tree on Post Street?

M. White (Miguelito), Friday, 18 August 2006 20:03 (nineteen years ago)

ah - I never go drinking in Nob Hill!

Shakey Mo Collier (Shakey Mo Collier), Friday, 18 August 2006 20:08 (nineteen years ago)

Post Street isn't Nob Hill!

M. White (Miguelito), Friday, 18 August 2006 20:14 (nineteen years ago)

Yelp sez:

C Bobby's Owl Tree
(415) 776-9344
**** based on 53 reviews
District: Nob Hill
601 Post Street
San Francisco, CA 94109

but what do I know, I've never been there.

Shakey Mo Collier (Shakey Mo Collier), Friday, 18 August 2006 20:16 (nineteen years ago)

It's Nob Hill in the fantasy of a dodgy real estate broker, maybe. It's at the edge of the 'Theater District'/Union Square, kitty-corner from the Bohemian Club.

M. White (Miguelito), Friday, 18 August 2006 20:32 (nineteen years ago)

My sister lives in Nob Hill, anyway, maybe I can walk down there to get away from it all and commune with the fowl.

Mary (Mary), Friday, 18 August 2006 20:33 (nineteen years ago)

the owl bar is the scariest place in SF. there are hundreds of owls, and THEY'RE ALL STARING AT YOU!!!
http://www.theowltree.com/

jaxon (jaxon), Friday, 18 August 2006 20:56 (nineteen years ago)

I like the Owl Tree. Good, cheap drinks. Funky and singular décor. Nice people.

M. White (Miguelito), Friday, 18 August 2006 21:09 (nineteen years ago)

owls are evil. david lynch told me so. But M. White hates David Lynch... hmmm...

Shakey Mo Collier (Shakey Mo Collier), Friday, 18 August 2006 21:12 (nineteen years ago)

I don't hate HIM. I merely find most of his work tedious.

M. White (Miguelito), Friday, 18 August 2006 21:25 (nineteen years ago)

And if the owl was good enough for Athena than it's good enough for me.

I remember seeing a great-horned owl in Yosemite when I was 5.

They also have one of the weirdest digestive systems.

M. White (Miguelito), Friday, 18 August 2006 21:31 (nineteen years ago)

"When an Owl is about to produce a pellet, it will take on a pained expression - the eyes are closed, the facial disc narrow, and the bird will be reluctant to fly. At the moment of expulsion, the neck is stretched up and forward, the beak is opened, and the pellet simply drops out without any retching or spitting movements."

TMI

Shakey Mo Collier (Shakey Mo Collier), Friday, 18 August 2006 21:33 (nineteen years ago)

The Owl Tree looks adorable.

Mary (Mary), Friday, 18 August 2006 21:37 (nineteen years ago)

You can't say 'TMI' after you click on a link that says "weirdest digestive systems", Shakey.

x-post

Mary, you should go, that southern part of Nob Hill area has some cute neighborhoody bars.

M. White (Miguelito), Friday, 18 August 2006 21:39 (nineteen years ago)

Tell me where that is? My sister lives a few blocks from Grace Cathedral and we are usually in some Euro cafe nearby.

Mary (Mary), Friday, 18 August 2006 22:01 (nineteen years ago)

What's the weather like there, by the way? Do I need long sleeves/sweaters/a jacket?

Mary (Mary), Saturday, 19 August 2006 00:07 (nineteen years ago)

What's the weather like there, by the way? Do I need long sleeves/sweaters/a jacket?

Yes! Always expect it to be chilly in SF. Don't fall into the trap of so many tourists, who have to buy cheap fleeces that say "SF" on it when they get here.

mikef (mfleming), Saturday, 19 August 2006 00:30 (nineteen years ago)

My sister told me to bring a fleece, yet I don't have any.

I do have a T-shirt with an owl on it to wear to the pub, though.

Mary (Mary), Saturday, 19 August 2006 03:02 (nineteen years ago)

if your sister told you to bring a fleece, she obviously lives in the marina

jaxon (jaxon), Saturday, 19 August 2006 05:36 (nineteen years ago)

To be fair, the fleece was for Big Sur.

Mary (Mary), Saturday, 19 August 2006 11:40 (nineteen years ago)

Though she used to live in the marina:)

How is the Swan Oyster Depot?

Mary (Mary), Saturday, 19 August 2006 14:41 (nineteen years ago)

its fucking cold here. though went shopping and got this great second hand shearling coat for $150! and a cashmere sweater for $18! ahhh, san francisco. why bars close at 2 :(

phil-two (phil-two), Sunday, 20 August 2006 08:40 (nineteen years ago)

The Swan Oyster Depot, if you haven't already been, Mary, is excellent.

M. White (Miguelito), Monday, 21 August 2006 12:48 (nineteen years ago)

two months pass...
I'm going to have one day in San Francisco proper, and it's going to be next Sunday - what should I do? I don't have much of a plan - we were thinking of trying Pizzeria Delfina, which I gather is in Mission - is there much to do around there? Maybe grabbing some cheap good Cal-Mex food somewhere would be good, too (people keep telling me about fish tacos). What's the most fun/interesting things to do on a Sunday afternoon?

toby (tsg20), Sunday, 22 October 2006 14:54 (nineteen years ago)

There is plenty around there. Walk along Valencia St. There are tons of boutiques, plus Aquarius Records, Borderland Books, Good Vibrations. And if you feel like thrifting there are tons of places on Mission St itself.

Alex in SF (Alex in SF), Sunday, 22 October 2006 16:00 (nineteen years ago)

if you're gonna be in the mission, u should probably see if anywhere is renting track bikes

jaxon (jaxon), Sunday, 22 October 2006 16:38 (nineteen years ago)

If you like seafood, go to the Swan Oyster Depot (http://sanfrancisco.citysearch.com/profile/885734). There's also pretty good views and okay shopping around there.

If you like owls, go to the Owl Tree.
http://static.flickr.com/93/233339917_5acf9048ae.jpg?v=0
But check the schedule, it only open like Thur - Sat I think.

The ferry terminal is also a good toursity place, especially if the weather is nice, and there's lots of overpriced boutique food there too.

Mary (Mary), Sunday, 22 October 2006 19:03 (nineteen years ago)

is it really dumb to stay near the wharf? i know about the tourists&tacky&"dirty"¬-for-locals and gather you gotta wait forever for the cable cars, so it might not be very convenient for getting to the Mission or Berkeley, but if it's yr first time, and you wanna relax near the water, and don't care much about downtown, and you want to walk to the Presidio and other parts North?

gabbneb (gabbneb), Monday, 23 October 2006 02:44 (nineteen years ago)

It's not dumb if you get a good deal on a hotel.

Alex in SF (Alex in SF), Monday, 23 October 2006 03:01 (nineteen years ago)

I wouldn't hang out by the wharf though. That would get old real fast.
