think its time for a new iphone :( roll on june

Romford Spring (DG), Friday, 15 April 2011 12:56 (fifteen years ago)

My point was that the ~guts~ of 10.7 could well be rebuilt to properly take advantage of the sorts of chips that go into iOS sorts of devices.

As stet mentioned, iOS is a branch/derivative of OS X. The problem with A5 and such is that there are actually fewer things there to take advantage of! It's a low-power chipset that has a high level of integration, but all things considered, it doesn't have all the features of an i7 or even Core Duo chip.

Apple has never made a secret of the fact that iOS is the same core. It's kind of painfully obvious considering the tools for development are public, and even before that was provided, people jailbreaking devices were able to take advantage of their knowledge of unix/OS X to do what they do.

So wait, I am not crazy and Schlafsack and Autumn Almanac are the same person?

mh, Friday, 15 April 2011 15:22 (fifteen years ago)

DG, all reputable sources are saying it's going to be at least September before we see new phones. :/

nooooooooooo

Getting the macbook air 13" in the end!

forest zombie (Vasco da Gama), Friday, 15 April 2011 15:27 (fifteen years ago)

Look I don't know, perhaps iOS and OS X are now forks of the same lump of crazy gravy that is The Apple Operating System Of The Future in which case I would be talking shit, but if we knew that to be a fact then it would mean that Apple's wall of secrecy has failed and we wouldn't be having this discussion in the first place.

fwiw, this is the part that confused the hell out of me, because Apple has never kept this a secret!

new iphones in sept makes me hope-think that ipod touches will get a cell chip. unlikely, i know, but i hope so much!

does anyone have the 2010 unibody mac mini? what's the performance like?

shaane, Friday, 15 April 2011 16:41 (fifteen years ago)

DG, all reputable sources are saying it's going to be at least September before we see new phones.

thankfully. maybe they can make some computers in the interim.

jed_, Friday, 15 April 2011 16:42 (fifteen years ago)

can't. too busy putting some iphone gesture bullshit into os x and calling it 10.7.

caek, Friday, 15 April 2011 17:17 (fifteen years ago)

Mission Control, Versions, and the Resume functionality look ok!

mh, Friday, 15 April 2011 17:34 (fifteen years ago)

Wow, cheers for that iOS Core link, I had no idea Apple was telling everyone about it. So if the iOS/-X monster core is already built tough and A5 is just a chip that does fewer things then that person upthread should just buy whatever it was that (s)he was going to buy before I got involved.

I made a second account to use from work (for a host of reasons, none of which involve socks) but gave it a stupid name and now I'm stuck with it.

two weeks pass...

Sounds like rubbish to me but http://unplugged.rcrwireless.com/index.php/20110503/devices/8804/hot-rumor-apple-ipad-3-to-be-fully-3d/

[...] Apple’s third generation tablet, already in the advanced planning stages and very much 3D, we’re told.

“The fact that the iPad 3 is 3D is a dead cert,” one Hollywood insider close to the big movie studios told RCR, adding that the screen would be the real magic. She went on to say that the big film studios were currently running around like blue arsed flies trying to gear up to release plenty of 3D content in time for Apple’s next launch.

lol

caek, Thursday, 5 May 2011 07:49 (fifteen years ago)

yeah, there's absolutely no way.. the ONLY 3d thing i can imagine apple would consider for the ipad is the eye-tracking pseudo-3d stuff

mbp died :(

started making strange noises, guessing the HD is fucked. surprised it lasted so long, i made it out of two broken macbooks. everytime i took it apart i'd be left with a bunch of screws and no idea where they're meant to go, or i'd lose screws in the carpet or my shoe or something. the top keyboard bit is attached with 3 screws at the mo hehe

anyway, psyched about buying one of those new iMacs, my first new apple product. for any uk ppl andertons do excellent 0% finance options that i haven't seen elsewhere...

so i've been thinking about getting a new computer

macbook air seems ~amazing~ but i'm leery of its lack of juice. macbook pro 13" seems pretty ideal but i'd want an external monitor for it. but i just realized something: the price of a mbp is the same as a 21.5" imac (with better spec). and the cost of an external monitor is only hair less than the cost of something like an ASUS netbook.

tell me why it would be dumb/annoying/whatever to have a netbook/imac combo instead of a laptop/external deal?

cop a cute abdomen (gbx), Thursday, 2 June 2011 15:55 (fifteen years ago)

also i searched for a 'netbook' thread and couldn't find one---what's the ilx hivemind think of them? all i do w/my laptop when i'm out and about is email/web stuff.

cop a cute abdomen (gbx), Thursday, 2 June 2011 15:57 (fifteen years ago)

netbook+ubuntu = great

Latham Green, Thursday, 2 June 2011 16:01 (fifteen years ago)

are there any netbooks that come with ubuntu preinstalled? or would i have to work around?

cop a cute abdomen (gbx), Thursday, 2 June 2011 16:02 (fifteen years ago)

1) two systems = cognitive overheads, ime
2) different operating systems = pain in the ass, even assuming the one that isn't OS X isn't awful (it will be)

caek, Thursday, 2 June 2011 16:04 (fifteen years ago)

do you have any linux experience ?

caek, Thursday, 2 June 2011 16:05 (fifteen years ago)

what do you want the netbook for? would an ipad cover your portable needs?

caek, Thursday, 2 June 2011 16:05 (fifteen years ago)

probably, tbh

cop a cute abdomen (gbx), Thursday, 2 June 2011 16:06 (fifteen years ago)

get that + imac then u madman.

caek, Thursday, 2 June 2011 16:07 (fifteen years ago)

some of the sync issues go away, and you're not dealing with windows or a hobbyist operating system.

caek, Thursday, 2 June 2011 16:08 (fifteen years ago)

that seems....reasonable

cop a cute abdomen (gbx), Thursday, 2 June 2011 16:09 (fifteen years ago)

it's going to be ~$100 more than a netbook, but assuming you value your own time ...

caek, Thursday, 2 June 2011 16:10 (fifteen years ago)

what are you doing that a macbook air will not have the power for btw?

caek, Thursday, 2 June 2011 16:10 (fifteen years ago)

video? video games?

caek, Thursday, 2 June 2011 16:10 (fifteen years ago)

lightroom? A video game. just one.

cop a cute abdomen (gbx), Thursday, 2 June 2011 16:13 (fifteen years ago)

pornography?

☂ (max), Thursday, 2 June 2011 16:14 (fifteen years ago)

no

cop a cute abdomen (gbx), Thursday, 2 June 2011 16:14 (fifteen years ago)

hmm. LR was always fine for me on my 2008 macbook, which the current air is much faster than. i think you'd be fine with 4GB. you shoot raw right? might be worth taking LR and your library down to an apple store on a usb stick and trying it on a MBA. i think they'll cooperate with that.

air has a decent graphics card, almost identical to my MBP, which runs HL2, portal et al. fine.

caek, Thursday, 2 June 2011 16:18 (fifteen years ago)

i'm thinking about an air actually.

i need 1 computer not 2, something i can tote to and from work every day (getting a bit sick of the 15" MBP in this regard). i use mine for some astro stuff but the horsepower requirements are qualitatively similar to LR + videogame type stuff. tbh the main concern is that you can only get it with a 256GB hard drive.

caek, Thursday, 2 June 2011 16:20 (fifteen years ago)

bear in mind that for normal desktop use the air will probably "feel" faster than most other apple portables because of the SSD hard drive.

caek, Thursday, 2 June 2011 16:20 (fifteen years ago)

My wife needs a new laptop and is thinking Mac for editing scores and storing music. I am assuming MBP over Air is the way to go re: storage/power/real estate tradeoffs?

low-rent black gangster nicknamed Bootsy (DJP), Thursday, 2 June 2011 16:22 (fifteen years ago)

i think the air only makes sense if you're travelling with it and you don't have big storage needs.

caek, Thursday, 2 June 2011 16:28 (fifteen years ago)

that is my thought as well; also I have issues paying that much for a screen that small
