Wow, I wonder if they have any period footage or production art or anything? Or if it's just a bunch of talking heads? Will definitely watch either way.

Jodorowsky writes, again in his book El Topo:

"When I wanted to do the rape scene, I explained to [Mara Lorenzio] that I was going to hit her and rape her. There was no emotional relationship between us, because I had put a clause in all the women's contracts stating that they would not make love with the director. We had never talked to each other. I knew nothing about her. We went to the desert with two other people: the photographer and a technician. No one else. I said, 'I'm not going to rehearse. There will be only one take because it will be impossible to repeat. Roll the cameras only when I signal you to.' Then I told her, 'Pain does not hurt. Hit me.' And she hit me. I said, 'Harder.' And she started to hit me very hard, hard enough to break a rib...I ached for a week. After she had hit me long enough and hard enough to tire her, I said, 'Now it's my turn. Roll the cameras.' And I really...I really...I really raped her. And she screamed."

I've still never seen The Rainbow Thief, either, but I bought that boxed set that came out a few years ago (El Topo, The Holy Mountain, Fando y Lis and some short films, plus the soundtracks to El Topo and The Holy Mountain), and I got the recent DVD of Santa Sangre too. Would love to interview Jodorowsky.

some dune projects have begun, then been abandoned, over the past few years. i realize it's a very hard story to convert into a film, but so was the lord of the rings trilogy, and that was done very well.

I like the Lynch version fine, altho obviously its totally different than what Jodo would've done with it

Interview with the dude who did the analog synth score

score was great! film in general was p fun, not a ton of new stuff I didn't know but nice to see all the players reminiscing and some of the animatics were pretty cool.

Rad movie. Best parts were Jodo's stories about trying to recruit Dali and his reaction to seeing the David Lynch "Dune" but the whole thing was delightful.

I've no doubt his Dune would have been a royal mess. I get the impression Jodorowsky has a lot of interest in the visual, stylistic, and iconographic potentialities in Dune, but he hardly talks about the story at all.

So uh... a customer brought in an old, illustrated/storyboarded script for Jodorowsky's Dune. I'm going to try to get photos of the illustrations because they're kind of awesome. Don't know who did them - doesn't look like Moebius or anything. This doesn't look exactly like the book in the documentary, btw.

that's harsh. i have to admit he comes across as really charming in the documentary about his abortive attempt at "dune", but i still couldn't help thinking "if this movie ever got made, it would be terrible." i kind of like some of jodorowsky's films, but they're essentially kitsch.

This is a book of original art by Moebius & HR Giger. Did Christies really think it would fetch only $35K?

A big chunk of that book is available online in decent scans. The storyboards are great. I think there's no way a quarter of that version of Dune as seen in the sboards would've made it onscreen.

There were regular double bills of El Topo and The Holy Mountain in Toronto for many years while they were being kept out of distribution in the States by Allen Klein. Apparently it was a contractual requirement for them to be shown together; I watched them both on the same night and that was WAY too much Jodorowsky at once.
I just saw Santa Sangre recently, with no particular expectations, and was really pleasantly surprised. For a filmmaker who I tend to think of as having a narrow range of effects (doing one particular thing very well), there was a lot of humour and emotional depth to the story that was entirely compatible with the usual grotesquerie. The Dance of Reality, which I saw a few years ago, was soulful in the same way, but I had supposed that that was a recent development in his style, related to the film being autobiographical. I'd probably rank him above Fellini now.

Love Jodo for the most part but no way he even touches Fellini as a filmmaker.

Fantastic Planet would be my 1973 experimental pick.

The comparison of the two came to mind because of the circus milieu of Santa Sangre. My personal view on Fellini is that he peaked early with I Vitelloni, and got bigger not better.

i finally saw Holy Mountain, last night, in a small room. the colors were bright, the sounds were loud. i thought all the scenes with the fool carrying his replica around were so good. climbing that giant tower, then the alchemist descending the staircase in the slowest of realtime motion. at the end, the alchemist sending the fool home with the woman and chimpanzee who have been following him, before he can reach the top of the mountain. lots to think about.

i wish i were a little more versed in all the symbolism that permeates the film. for example, i recognized these symbols when they appeared and thought it was from the i ching,

i might do some internet hunting and see if i can find a shot-by-shot breakdown of the symbolism throughout the movie. would like to watch El Topo soon as well! also, are his 21st century films good?

I like The Dance of Reality, Endless Poetry is a decent sequel but not as good.

i think the new ones were supposed to be a part of a 5-film autobiographical series? i wonder if that's been abandoned or if the scripts/screenplays are somewhat developed

Maybe I posted on another thread, I got the incal a couple of christmases ago. It was abysmal.

He's been paired with some truly stunning comic artists. His plots are nonsense, but I'm willing to roll with it and enjoy the art.

I gave up on The Incal pretty early. Moebius was not fully operational and I think even Jodorowsky was disappointed in his work there.

Santa Sangre is great, an ultra-lurid telenovela-style horror movie. But it's a regular movie-movie, with a plot and whatnot, not a pure yank-your-brain-out-your-ass shotgun blast of symbolism like The Holy Mountain. I don't think any movie on earth is like The Holy Mountain, really.
