i dunno is it wise to start laying down early vilka boas constrictions

the salmon of procrastination (darraghmac), Wednesday, 13 April 2011 10:27 (fifteen years ago)

you're right prefabricated villas-boas prejudices wouldn't necessarily be built on secure foundations.

Will.Have.Known (Local Garda), Wednesday, 13 April 2011 10:31 (fifteen years ago)

he'll need some timeshare to make a property market snake joke

the salmon of procrastination (darraghmac), Wednesday, 13 April 2011 10:33 (fifteen years ago)

so do people genuinely think Dalglish won't get this job?

the pinefox, Wednesday, 13 April 2011 10:55 (fifteen years ago)

probably worth waiting a bit before ruffling boas' feathers imo

Jlloyd, I'm ready to be heartbroken (ken c), Wednesday, 13 April 2011 10:56 (fifteen years ago)

Would be politically virtually impossible to let Dalglish go unless they were replacing him with, like, Guardiola or someone. It's still difficult to tell quite how good he is, or can be, though.

Matt DC, Wednesday, 13 April 2011 11:02 (fifteen years ago)

Dalglish could step aside or upstairs or whatever or be persuaded to. Up to him really.

Tom D (Tom D.), Wednesday, 13 April 2011 11:06 (fifteen years ago)

Rooney gives an interview about saying the wrong thing in front of the TV cameras to Torksport's Keysey and Graysy.

I wonder what gave those two particular former Sky Sports presenters the insight to etc etc.

James Mitchell, Wednesday, 13 April 2011 11:12 (fifteen years ago)

it was just banter

Will.Have.Known (Local Garda), Wednesday, 13 April 2011 12:25 (fifteen years ago)

I've never seen a Villas Boas team play, but loads of people saying if Dalglish doesn't get the job then he's the man they'd want. Dalglish will get the job though.

A spokesperson for the Arsenal Supporters' Trust (AST) welcomed Usmanov's stance.

"AST welcomes Red and White Holdings' [Usmanov's investment company] commitment to Arsenal and calls on all shareholders to work together," the supporters trust said in a statement.

"Their priorities should firstly be making Arsenal a successful football team, secondly placing no leveraged debt on the club or taking dividends and management fees out of the club, and thirdly helping supporters be directly involved in the club's shareholding."

I for one am at a loss to think of any more pressing moral imperative on Alisher Usmanov

MPx4A, Wednesday, 13 April 2011 17:15 (fifteen years ago)

no leveraged debt, no management fees, no dividends

So what's in it for a shareholder, altruism aside?

death, taxes and (onimo), Wednesday, 13 April 2011 18:39 (fifteen years ago)

Exactly. Football fans have their heads in the clouds about things like this. A normal dividend payout should be welcome because the only other thing a sensible owner should do is fatten the club up and sell to a greater fool.

Danny Fiszman died, according to the official site.

lol please say kroenke or usmanov was indirectly involved some way.

"If they do make it to the final and I can somehow get a ticket," he said, "I'll find it impossible to say no ... even if it means selling my house, scooter and all my clothes.

"If money was no object I'd be back for both games, but there is a wedding in the pipeline and I'm moving into a new house this month ... on an island where the cost of living is so high that even Jermaine Pennant might only be able to afford three cars.

"So even a line like 'but Tony Pulis is going to be wearing a suit at Wembley' isn't cutting it with the wife-to-be."

My father in law was working as a copper in Bermuda (with the shorts and everything) when my mum in law married him and Mrs V spent her first 2 or 3 years there I think.

A Zed and Two Nults (Noodle Vague), Thursday, 14 April 2011 12:58 (fifteen years ago)

why is this the press photo for the brothers attempting to stamp out the use of the "Y-word" in football?

The straws make a Y.

death, taxes and (onimo), Thursday, 14 April 2011 13:51 (fifteen years ago)

There is a 'y' in 'unfunny'.

James Mitchell, Thursday, 14 April 2011 13:53 (fifteen years ago)

isn't this y word used by people who are of the faith the y word describes? or at least people sort of referring to themselves as being of that faith even if they're not?

Will.Have.Known (Local Garda), Thursday, 14 April 2011 13:56 (fifteen years ago)

yeah, the brothers argument seems to be that using it in that way encourages others to use it in a more hateful way against them

mizzell, Thursday, 14 April 2011 13:57 (fifteen years ago)

whats goin on, cant get into link? is this abt yids?

the salmon of procrastination (darraghmac), Thursday, 14 April 2011 13:57 (fifteen years ago)

Is it racist that I presumed Baddiel was a Spurs fan?

'If Spurs call themselves 'Yids,' it leads to other teams chanting it back at them in a negative way with hatred which leads to those other chants about the Holocaust.'

Football fans of course being a mild-mannered sort who would never use offensive chants unless encouraged to by opposing fans.

Matt DC, Thursday, 14 April 2011 14:05 (fifteen years ago)

all that said i do find it horrible when i hear it...from spurs fans even. it's just not a very nice chant.

is it racist that when I scrolled down that article really quickly I momentarily thought the photo of all the Spurs fans holding up flags with the crest on looked like KKK hoods :(

Frank-Lampard-backing-anti-semitism-campaign.html (DJ Mencap), Thursday, 14 April 2011 14:28 (fifteen years ago)

Is it racist that the Daily Mail think Frank Skinner is David Baddiel's brother?

James Mitchell, Thursday, 14 April 2011 14:29 (fifteen years ago)

'If Spurs call themselves 'Yids,' it leads to other teams chanting it back at them in a negative way with hatred which leads to those other chants about the Holocaust.'

Football fans of course being a mild-mannered sort who would never use offensive chants unless encouraged to by opposing fans.

Yes, quite. My sense of the chronology is that there used to be many racist football supporters and a lot of racist football chanting - because Spurs had a Jewish element in their support, this was the target that opposition fans picked on. In response to this the Spurs fans (who are mostly not Jewish) all self-identified as 'Yiddoes' and the 'Yid Army'. Twenty-odd years passed and racism became far less acceptable/visible at football matches, as it did in wider society. David Baddiel went to a football match and heard some anti-semitic chanting from his fellow Chelsea fans, which offended him. He decided to try to persuade Spurs fans to stop calling themselves 'yids' in the hope that it would stop supporters of other clubs singing about concentration camps.

I mean, it's well-intentioned but probably doomed to failure because:
a) Spurs have been calling themselves Y-words for so long that it's ingrained as part of their identity and they won't take kindly to being asked to stop
b) The kind of people who think it's amusing to sing about gassing people at Auschwitz are probably not just doing it in response to Spurs fans calling themselves 'yids', but because they're scum

they claim that A small number of both Jewish and non-Jewish Spurs fans use the Y word in what they consider to be an inoffensive manner.

In my admittedly distant experience, it is used by basically every Spurs fan.

mizzell, Thursday, 14 April 2011 17:08 (fifteen years ago)

This is fairly lolsome. From Mediawatch

Annoyed by tabloid journalists? Irked by the reams of bulls**t that pour from their faces? Annoyed that you never get a chance to question them about it?

ChelseaFC TV presenter Gigi Salmon (great name) clearly is, and after inviting Daily Mirror hack Martin Lipton on her show on Thursday, she decided to take the old boy to task.

Lipton had scribbled a half-arsed story on Thursday morning claiming that 'dressing room sources' at Chelsea had told him that they want Jose Mourinho back at the club, and the wonderful Ms Salmon decided to press him on where he'd got his story from.

kinda a 50/50 tbh...he's never gonna reveal a source if someone did say it. but it's not even that contentious anyway, of course some of the players want jose back. could be a made up story but even still.....don't feel it's that heinous.

Will.Have.Known (Local Garda), Friday, 15 April 2011 12:56 (fifteen years ago)

Oh it's not. His squirming is amusing though

Number None, Friday, 15 April 2011 12:57 (fifteen years ago)

of course some of the players want jose back

will have (argh) been the case since JM left so he deserves to be taken to task just for being really lazy and unimaginative. if he'd actually said that and explained 'this kind of story is common practice' etc. would prob be fair enough tho!
