― You Say Various Things (Autumn Almanac), Tuesday, 12 April 2011 23:58 (fifteen years ago)
(San Francisco, CA) On Tuesday, March 29, 2011 at 10am. Residents of the South of Market community (SoMa), along with the members of the South of Market Community Action Network (SOMCAN), Tenderloin Filipino Community Association (TFCA) and other concerned San Franciscans will hold a RALLY in front of Twitter’s office building to stand firmly behind the goals that the City should not pass the “Payroll Expense Tax Exclusion in Central Market Street and Tenderloin area” until Twitter commits to a comprehensive Community Benefits Agreement (CBA) and the Board of Supervisors push through a companion legislation that will prevent the displacement of over 7,000 community residents from the South of Market and Tenderloin neighborhood.
Additionally, in asking for a pay-roll tax break, Twitter is going to remove a projected $22 million, to disappear from City Hall’s budget. Given that Twitter has benefited greatly from its partnership with the San Francisco community, it is great cause of concern that Twitter wants to rid itself of this social responsibility. In exchange for these, the SOMA and Tenderloin communities are demanding a comprehensive Community Benefits Agreement (CBA). The CBA will help define how Twitter’s presence will benefit the surrounding low-income communities and keep Twitter Corporation accountable to our neighborhood and residents’ concerns.
Residents of the community are also very concerned that if this tax-break ordinance goes through without any other external protections, such as companion legislation, the move by the City of creating a tax-exempt zone for large corporations will cause the displacement of Twitter’s neighbors through landlords exploiting the revitalization of the Central, South of Market and Tenderloin areas as an excuse to raise their rents.
Antonio Zavala, a father of two and a SOMCAN member states, “South of Market, and District 6 in general, is the most affordable place in the whole city. If our landlord raises our rent it will force a lot of families to be homeless or pushed out of the city.”
These concerns reflect the need for the Board of Supervisors to push through a companion legislation that will protect the community from displacement caused by higher rents due to revitalization of the existing community. We can already see the effects of Twitter’s corporate irresponsibility coming to light with other corporations, such as Zynga, who is threatening to leave San Francisco unless it receives tax breaks and other benefits.
The CBA, drawn up by local community organizers and residents, will not protect the community by itself. What is needed is a companion legislation that will protect the community from higher rents and from future big businesses from coming in and changing the make-up of the community, which in turn will cause the nightmares of residents, such as Zavala, to come to life.Twitter needs to partner with its neighbors to ensure the existing presence of long time residents in the neighborhood will be protected by keeping public officials accountable to the displacement issues that will arise by the payroll tax exempt ordinance. Twitter also needs to live up to its corporate responsibility by not trying to undermine the needs of the community, through undercutting the CBA by making it non-comprehensive and fitting only their needs as a corporation and not as a community partner.

is it british for restraining order?
― Stone Colde Sylke Freek (forksclovetofu), Monday, 9 May 2011 00:25 (fifteen years ago)
It means the press can't even mention that there is an injunction in place (I think), the rationale being (I think) that if you are, say a footballer having a fling with some minor celeb and said footballer puts gets an injunction against newspapers saying that, the mere fact of the injunction might imply guilt in some places? Typing it out now that doesn't seem right, maybe someone else can explain it better?

my first assumption is that the people behind @injunctionsuper are just bored students making shit up - i mean why on earth would anyone believe them?
as jemima khan has pointed out, the proof she hasn't got a superinjunction is that she's actually being named everywhere.
― lex pretend, Monday, 9 May 2011 09:21 (fifteen years ago)
she's volunteered the 'information' tho
― Romford Spring (DG), Monday, 9 May 2011 09:24 (fifteen years ago)
xp at least some of the ones @injunctionsuper mentions are true though. and i'd have thought that papers could report her denial even if an injunction was in place - she'd have effectively trashed it herself.
i was opposed to superinjunctions but if they're keeping naked photos of jeremy clarkson out of the papers, i can see their uses.
― joe, Monday, 9 May 2011 09:25 (fifteen years ago)
