Tommy Wiseau's "The Room"

Wiseau's dialogue is really something. Even little things like when Claudette says "I've always thought of him as my son-in-law." Who says that?!

The dialogue is definitely one of the weirder parts of the movie, that's kind of the source of most of the WTF moments in the film, just little things like Mark randomly saying "I'm thinking of moving into a bigger place...I'm making good money now" apropos of nothing is what makes this so good. I just noticed that none of the characters really have any reason to enter or leave a scene. It's always "well, I gotta go", or "hey, I was just uh...wondering if I could talk to Johnny", or "I need to borrow a cup of sugar". Also totally love the guy who plays the boyfriend of the sister, he's not in the movie long, but every scene with him is ridiculous.

i watched this with my mates and they just thought it was boring and shit. they didn't "get it" at all.

at this point though it kinda feels like reading the bible. i'm so familiar with the big scenes from reading about them in other places that what's the point.

xxp did you see the movie beforehand? if not I would think it would be a pretty confusing experience

also, it's totally worth seeing anyway - i didn't find the youtube clips funny at all when I first saw them, but once you watch the movie and see the absurdity unfold, it's much much better

No, first time seeing it. It didn't take long to get up to speed. It's not like the fan shoutbacks are terrifically complicated.

I don't think it would be nearly as good watching it at home. At the theater you've got the collective drunk hivemind shouting things at the screen, throwing spoons, etc

I was struck by how competent the actual photography and sound were. I think that's kind of the key - how totally at odds that is with the quality of the writing, acting, editing. If it just looked like crap it would be no different from a thousand other shitty vanity movies.

I wasn't really prepared for the ass-grinding though.

i feel like it's one of those "bad" movies that is actually incredibly entertaining to watch . it's pretty amazing . if the flower shop scene easily youtubed appeals to you at all "hi doggie!", then you should probably take in the whole thing. also, i can't believe i'm typing this out loud, but his love interest in the movie is incontrovertibly hella sexy. there, i said it.

also, one of the best names for a film ever. it's not called the thin green line or the endless mile or the scarlet pumpernickel or whatever. it's called "the room". it's the cinematic equivalent of kierkegaard walking around with one pant leg shorter than the other. just because...

the girl was what I'd consider "informercial hot", as in she's not really leading lady type material but you can talk yourself into believing it.

Oh god looking through the YouTube clips.. is just.. like I actually didn't hear about 50% of the dialogue in this movie because people were yelling so much. The flower shop scene is amazing, she's like "Oh hi Johnny, I didn't realize it was you!" Yeah how could you, guy is unrecognizable with his shades on

Strongo, you should totally still see it. Familiarity of clips didn't ruin the overall vibe at all - seeing it alone might be a chore, but worth some kind of date/group viewing, assuming you don't mind being a cliche.

I've seen a lot of bad movies - including the one with the infamous "GARBAGE DAY!!" scene (still my favorite scene of all time). The Room is kinda like that scene, over and over again. It's so perfect that it rises above parody. Especially the scenes with the guys just hangin' out, talking women, and throwing footballs. Like, "so, how is your sex life?" is a funny line, but the way he says it apropos of nothing in some random coffee shop conversation is what makes it so great.

i tend to think bad movies like "Snakes on a Plane" or "Birdemic" will probably be forgotten in a few years, but "The Room" is going to be a classic my whole life

It's kind of amazing someone could still pull off an Ed Wood-ian triple threat with seemingly no self-awareness at this late a day, but Tommy Wiseau, man...Tommy Wiseau.

for whatever reason I'm really hoping that his real place of origin never gets leaked. there are so many questions about the guy, but he talks SO MUCH and everything he says just adds more questions while resolving nothing. that's part of what makes him so awesome.

the crew seemed decent though didn't they? the actors were not great but most of them were like 4th or 5th choices and aren't even really actors so for that they did alright. the only actively terrible actor was the guy who was dating Lisa's sister, he seemed to be the only one who didn't play his part straight at all. the problems with the movie had to do with the pacing and the dialogue, which Tommy apparently was reluctant to change no matter how much the actors tried to "help him out". apparently in the first cut he kept saying "you're TAKING me apart, Lisa!"

i like the story about how he was a negligent director b/c he would disappear every 10 minutes or so in order to psyche himself into character

I like the doctor in the movie - he is such an awful psychologist - for no reason he suddenly labels Lisa a psychopath - just becuase she is having an affair

I'm going to start referring to sneaking booze as "psyching myself into character" now

xp probably the best character is the guy who he inexplicably gets replaced with like 80% of the way into the film
