Yeah, the £12m for Adam story still worries me more than the £35m for Carroll one.

Ismael Klata, Sunday, 10 April 2011 13:38 (fifteen years ago)

We all know how this will end.

James Mitchell, Sunday, 10 April 2011 13:59 (fifteen years ago)

Chief football writer Phil McNulty reports from Bloomfield Road: "The sudden elevation of Jens Lehmann after an absence of almost three years in the Arsenal goal following Manuel Almunia's injury is now the major talking point of Arsene Wenger's team selection.

The Geirogeirgegege (nakhchivan), Sunday, 10 April 2011 14:11 (fifteen years ago)

amazing.

Lehmann good old fashioned crazy still

popular gay automobile (a hoy hoy), Sunday, 10 April 2011 14:11 (fifteen years ago)

can nult not tell that his insensate doggerel regularly fails to parse correctly, or is he just too lazy to bother rereading what he just typed

The Geirogeirgegege (nakhchivan), Sunday, 10 April 2011 14:16 (fifteen years ago)

"And a nice little jig from an elated Arsene Wenger. Who can blame him as things were nervy for a while."

James Mitchell, Sunday, 10 April 2011 14:18 (fifteen years ago)

Both teams have scored at least one goal in every single game at Bloomfield Road this season.

death, taxes and (onimo), Sunday, 10 April 2011 14:26 (fifteen years ago)

So basically it comes down to getting over that last hump, beating Utd? We were never going to get over our Chelsea fear and then beat them, we were never going to get over our Barca fear and then beat them... Utd are gonna win the fucking league.

back to adam for a sec, must admit i was open to the idea of signing him in january, but having paid more attention to him since then, i don't really get it. we miss alonso, sign adam, he'll do. no. build the team around more rounded pass and move players like lucas (liverpool's player of the season by a mile) and aquilani. hell, if lucas get's criticised for giving the ball away too much when his completion rate is regularly pretty much perfect, then god knows what kind of stick adam would get. but he's british and he can take a free kick. bollocks. if kenny does sign him then he'll need to eradicate the 'gotta be the hero' mindset that he seems to have thrived on at blackpool.

good win that for arsenal. thought blackpool were really hateful after they pulled that goal back. don't mind teams having a go and getting stuck in, but they were just plain dirty.

territory of the magic wand (Chris), Sunday, 10 April 2011 14:34 (fifteen years ago)

I don't think anyone outside punditry or Arsenal optimists doubts it

Ismael Klata, Sunday, 10 April 2011 14:35 (fifteen years ago)

xps

Ismael Klata, Sunday, 10 April 2011 14:36 (fifteen years ago)

tbf i doubt 'inside' punditry because fuck an alan shearetc. we win our game in hand and beat utd, its a 1 pt difference. not saying we will do it but its odd how we have been totally fucking written off. also you'd think everyone involved would benefit from calling it a race instead of a boring inevitability.

charlie adam would be fine if a whole midfield didn't go just through him.

popular gay automobile (a hoy hoy), Sunday, 10 April 2011 14:41 (fifteen years ago)

think Arsenal will rake Liverpool and even beat Spurs somehow

^^^Stan Kroenke set for Arsenal takeover deal

cockroach shakespeare (Noodle Vague), Sunday, 10 April 2011 19:35 (fifteen years ago)

What's that going to mean? Better than Usmanov doing the same, presumably.

Ismael Klata, Sunday, 10 April 2011 19:42 (fifteen years ago)

can't help but feel that it'll impact on the financial prudence somewhere down the line, I can't imagine Kroenke's doing it for the love of the club.

cockroach shakespeare (Noodle Vague), Sunday, 10 April 2011 19:50 (fifteen years ago)

Was always going to happen. A million times better than Jabba The Hut. He has so far paid outright for all shares and I believe he is not going to leverage the club for the rest of them.

popular gay automobile (a hoy hoy), Sunday, 10 April 2011 19:51 (fifteen years ago)

i don't think there's any suggestion of a Glazer-style debt problem, not initially, but I kinda wonder about any businessman who thinks an EPL club is an investment.

cockroach shakespeare (Noodle Vague), Sunday, 10 April 2011 19:53 (fifteen years ago)

Yeah Arsenal having to learn how to be thrifty in the transfer market might take Wenger out of his element.

popular gay automobile (a hoy hoy), Sunday, 10 April 2011 19:53 (fifteen years ago)

you think it'll mean being thrifty? cos I think it might mean ill-advisedly silly money being thrown at the wrong players, like at every other oligarch club.

cockroach shakespeare (Noodle Vague), Sunday, 10 April 2011 19:55 (fifteen years ago)

I think Wenger would burn down the stadium if someone told him to do that.

popular gay automobile (a hoy hoy), Sunday, 10 April 2011 19:58 (fifteen years ago)

but I kinda wonder about any businessman who thinks an EPL club is an investment

Well yes. John Henry's the only credible guy who shares that view so far as I can tell. Tbf it seems to have worked out alright for the Glazers (so far).

Ismael Klata, Sunday, 10 April 2011 20:04 (fifteen years ago)

The Roma takeover is a US sports tycoon as well iirc - a theme emerging?

Ismael Klata, Sunday, 10 April 2011 20:13 (fifteen years ago)

A few have done it properly - Levy, the people at Arsenal, Venkys

popular gay automobile (a hoy hoy), Sunday, 10 April 2011 20:15 (fifteen years ago)

Shinawatra nailed it best imo

Ismael Klata, Sunday, 10 April 2011 20:18 (fifteen years ago)

really hope adam to liverpool isn't a thing again this summer. number of times he needlessly looks for a killer ball is so silly

ah cmon are you just trolling me now buck

the salmon of procrastination (darraghmac), Sunday, 10 April 2011 22:10 (fifteen years ago)

i'm not denying gerrard's propensity to go hollywood. not sure how stevie me has anything to do with being concerned about the flaws in adam's game dude.

territory of the magic wand (Chris), Sunday, 10 April 2011 22:36 (fifteen years ago)

i just thought that it was strange to point it out as a major flaw given that he'd probably be closer to a replacement for gerrard long-term than any other player, but rly it was tired lols from me

i still think he'd be a good buy, but not at 12m or anything like. as long as we don't give ye kranjcar or anything, really not looking forward to losing him and keeping some of our other dross

the salmon of procrastination (darraghmac), Sunday, 10 April 2011 22:40 (fifteen years ago)

alright luv. it's a pretty easy flaw to iron out i'd imagine, 'hey son, go short once in a while'. i think the priority should be to keep aquilani though.

territory of the magic wand (Chris), Sunday, 10 April 2011 23:03 (fifteen years ago)

risky trying to work him into a team vs selling him while stock is high, is the thing there.....

the salmon of procrastination (darraghmac), Sunday, 10 April 2011 23:10 (fifteen years ago)

Looking forward to more Japanese girls supporting Arsenal.

James Mitchell, Monday, 11 April 2011 07:48 (fifteen years ago)

beckham is joining arsenal?

Jlloyd, I'm ready to be heartbroken (ken c), Monday, 11 April 2011 08:01 (fifteen years ago)

The statement to the stock exchange said: "The offer will not be funded by way of any debt finance (banks loans, payment in kind loans or other debt or quasi-debt interest bearing obligations) for which the payment of interest on, repayment of or security for any liability (contingent or otherwise) will depend on the business of Arsenal."

KSE appear happy to continue with how Arsenal are run but it is unclear what Kroenke's stance is when it comes to the transfer market.

Arsenal are currently second in the Premier League as they chase winning the title to end a trophy drought going back to 2005 when they won the FA Cup.

And, while Usmanov has previously called for Arsenal to invest heavily on the pitch, the club's board of directors have steered a more cautious financial path.

They have focused on using the additional income generated by the 60,300-capacity Emirates, which opened in July 2006, to lower Arsenal's debts.

The stock exchange statement added: "It is their (KSE) current intention that, if the offer becomes or is declared unconditional, they will continue to support and adhere to the self-sustaining business model hitherto pursued by the board of Arsenal."

The official site makes it clear he's got an agreement with Lady Nina but isn't quite there yet with Fiszman:

KSE has entered into a call and put option agreement with DF Nominees (the company holding Mr Daniel David Fiszman's interests in Arsenal Shares) in respect of 10,025 Arsenal Shares, representing approximately 16.11 per cent. of the issued share capital of Arsenal.

In addition, KSE has received irrevocable undertakings to accept the Offer from Lady Nina Bracewell-Smith and the Arsenal Directors who hold Arsenal Shares (other than Mr Fiszman and Mr Kroenke) in respect of all the Arsenal Shares which they hold, representing in aggregate 10,448 Arsenal Shares (approximately 16.79 per cent. of the issued share capital of Arsenal).

James Mitchell, Monday, 11 April 2011 08:04 (fifteen years ago)

Arsenal fans with one less thing to be smug about it, poor dears

Tom D (Tom D.), Monday, 11 April 2011 08:16 (fifteen years ago)

Could well be nothing more than a frustrated fan tbh. Expect to see the likes of diaby and almunia out before long

the salmon of procrastination (darraghmac), Monday, 11 April 2011 08:23 (fifteen years ago)

Hope he has the sense to get Pep in and not Bob Bradley.

James Mitchell, Monday, 11 April 2011 08:30 (fifteen years ago)

Is the Guardian worse than it used to be?

James Mitchell, Monday, 11 April 2011 09:24 (fifteen years ago)

Think Charlie Adam will go to Man United, not Liverpool - strikes me as the kind of player Fergie loves. There's a wishful thinking as it might stop them trying to sign Modric (and in fairness Adam would be available at about a quarter of the price).

Going back to the Pinefox/Darraghmac discussion upthread, Modric is the one player who really shouldn't be sold at any price, we'd have to totally rework the team. If we get silly money from Bale and invest it in a couple of reliable strikers I'll... still be upset, but not as much.

I'm not sure how much Kroenke would actually change at Arsenal? I can still see a Prem club, especially one like Arsenal, being a good investment. There's bound to be an internet rights bonanza at some point.

Matt DC, Monday, 11 April 2011 09:43 (fifteen years ago)

The fact that Kroenke already owns 100% of Arsenal Broadband would seem to back up that final point.

Matt DC, Monday, 11 April 2011 09:45 (fifteen years ago)

Always find it hard to believe Charlie Adam is that good, I saw him when he was a Rangers. Also, he can't get in to the Scotland team!

Tom D (Tom D.), Monday, 11 April 2011 09:45 (fifteen years ago)

How would an internet rights bonanza work though? It's been mooted for a few years now and I'm no closer to understanding - exclusive HQ streaming (iirc Dan uses this for mls) is all I can think of, but I'm not persuaded that'd do better than the current tv deals.

A proper European league is the end point here I think, as it's the one guaranteed way to raise the earning power of the game. Arsenal don't necessarily need it in order to be a good investment (depending on price obviously) but I suspect most other clubs would.

Ismael Klata, Monday, 11 April 2011 09:50 (fifteen years ago)

Also, he can't get in to the Scotland team!

He can now. Was going to say he was useless in the last game I saw him in, then remembered it was against Brazil, so that's OK. Except you should still be able to deliver a decent corner against Brazil, you'd think. But now.

ailsa, Monday, 11 April 2011 09:57 (fifteen years ago)

No, even.
