yet again it's time for me to lament the loaning of my motd box set to my ex's dad the week before she booted me out.

Leeds in the mid-70's, spurs in the early eighties, chelsea with osgood, some of the clips show teams that would prob be decried as super-wenger in terms of flamboyance today.

Except for employing actual murderers at centre half, obviously

I watched the famous World Cup final between England and Germany in 1966 recently, and I was actually surprised by how similar it was to the modern game. Sure, there was a bit less athleticism but it was quite recognizable (to my relatively untrained eyes).

40% chill and 100% negative (Tracer Hand), Thursday, 7 April 2011 09:29 (fifteen years ago)

Two pretty athletic teams there

Tom D (Tom D.), Thursday, 7 April 2011 09:30 (fifteen years ago)

yeah, my Dad tells a story about Alan Ball going up to Ramsey after one game and complaining that all he'd done was run up and down the pitch without seeing the ball all game. Ramsey told him if he didn't like it he didn't have to play.

cockroach shakespeare (Noodle Vague), Thursday, 7 April 2011 09:31 (fifteen years ago)

Rooney's ban has been upheld. Thinking Mick McCarthy shd try and stand a bit further away from the pitchside mics otherwise he could be out for a season.

lebron and andy carroll up front

Will.Have.Known (Local Garda), Thursday, 7 April 2011 12:47 (fifteen years ago)

Very interesting
about periods of footy.

I have watched 1981 cup final a couple of times.
It's slower etc
but Hoddle (who plays a lot on the flank I seem to recall) plays far more fine passes than people remember
(including one for Crooksy goal)
but you'd expect me to say that.

the pinefox, Thursday, 7 April 2011 12:57 (fifteen years ago)

i've caught everything i can on hoddle, and as far as i can see england haven't had a player of his consistent ability since. Gazza and le tissier come closest in terms of natural gifts, maybe?

Would be interested in pov of our aged constituents on that one.

the salmon of procrastination (darraghmac), Thursday, 7 April 2011 13:08 (fifteen years ago)

Gazza about the best. 53 caps for Hoddle. That's less than I thought.

Tom D (Tom D.), Thursday, 7 April 2011 13:12 (fifteen years ago)

Gascoigne above all others for me, though I was slightly too young to appreciate him fully. Since him, Rooney and Scholes, now Wilshere. Between Hoddle and Gascoigne? Not sure, it seems to have been a dark age. John Barnes never really did it for England is the received wisdom, so I guess Beardsley? Lineker is far better than he gets remembered for (if at all), but not really what you're getting at here.

Ismael Klata, Thursday, 7 April 2011 13:14 (fifteen years ago)

Think I'll start a new thread on ILF so the Prem chat doesn't get infected with cigs, booze and lard.

territory of the magic wand (Chris), Thursday, 7 April 2011 13:14 (fifteen years ago)

wilshere and rooney?

That's not a lot of top-class international performances between a pair of names, IK

the salmon of procrastination (darraghmac), Thursday, 7 April 2011 13:22 (fifteen years ago)

Jumping the gun with Wilshere a bit aren't we?

Tom D (Tom D.), Thursday, 7 April 2011 13:23 (fifteen years ago)

Nah, when someone emerges who's obviously got it, there's no point hanging about. Whether he fulfils it is another matter.

Ismael Klata, Thursday, 7 April 2011 13:26 (fifteen years ago)

Anyway, we're not just talking about 'for England' are we? Le Tiss can't feature if we are.

Ismael Klata, Thursday, 7 April 2011 13:28 (fifteen years ago)

Whether he fulfils it is another matter.

Well he's Arsenal so he probably won't

Tom D (Tom D.), Thursday, 7 April 2011 13:30 (fifteen years ago)

has the premier league published rules yet as to how far away from the camera do you have to be to swear and not get banned?

Jlloyd, I'm ready to be heartbroken (ken c), Thursday, 7 April 2011 13:39 (fifteen years ago)

why hasn't any managers started hiring people to watch footages from every angle to get key players from opposition teams banned? if i were a manager...

Jlloyd, I'm ready to be heartbroken (ken c), Thursday, 7 April 2011 13:40 (fifteen years ago)

would only work for utd

the salmon of procrastination (darraghmac), Thursday, 7 April 2011 13:45 (fifteen years ago)

truth. rooney proved it

Jlloyd, I'm ready to be heartbroken (ken c), Thursday, 7 April 2011 13:52 (fifteen years ago)

I saw Lineker play a few times and he was not better than he is remembered, he was a lot worse.

And this wasn't, I think, just a matter of being in decline (he was say 29 at the time).

the pinefox, Thursday, 7 April 2011 13:54 (fifteen years ago)

Lineker was a v. gifted goal-poacher and sometimes that's all u need to be. He had a great World Cup in 86 and I think of him as heralding the dawn of something a little better than the god-awful Brian Robson years for England.

cockroach shakespeare (Noodle Vague), Thursday, 7 April 2011 13:55 (fifteen years ago)

lineker scored goals like it was his job. Not much more to say about him really.

the salmon of procrastination (darraghmac), Thursday, 7 April 2011 13:56 (fifteen years ago)

scores goals like he makes puns

Jlloyd, I'm ready to be heartbroken (ken c), Thursday, 7 April 2011 13:59 (fifteen years ago)

i remember when they gave lineker goal of the season for some shitty tap in just cos he was moving to japan. think it was the year of that absolute belter curling counter-attack goal from dwight yorke...tho could be muddled.

Will.Have.Known (Local Garda), Thursday, 7 April 2011 14:02 (fifteen years ago)

agree that Lineker was goalscorer etc

but if that's all that counts then having seen him, ever, wouldn't count

you'd just have to look at the stats

the point about having seen him must involve the idea that he could have been better, or worse, than remembered, in ways not shown by excellent goal tally

then again, Mr Klata only said Lineker better than remembered, not that he'd seen him
so maybe what he meant was, people forget how many goals he scored

I don't think they do, though!!

the pinefox, Thursday, 7 April 2011 14:13 (fifteen years ago)

between Hoddle and Gascoigne (if Mr Klata meant temporally, in that sentence) the best player was Chris Waddle.

the pinefox, Thursday, 7 April 2011 14:14 (fifteen years ago)

Yes!

Ismael Klata, Thursday, 7 April 2011 14:15 (fifteen years ago)

ah yeah. I was leaving waddle out as being a wing wizard, tho really he and beardsley are probably overlooked too.

the salmon of procrastination (darraghmac), Thursday, 7 April 2011 14:19 (fifteen years ago)

Hoddle's relatively low number of caps tells you a lot about what's been wrong with English football for a long time. "Fine passes" seem like something that's come into fashion here relatively recently, and we wonder why so few players can do it.

Matt DC, Thursday, 7 April 2011 15:20 (fifteen years ago)

It's cos they waste their time trying 'Hollywood balls' instead

Ismael Klata, Thursday, 7 April 2011 15:21 (fifteen years ago)

That whole concept of "luxury players"... but then if you win the World Cup with Nobby Stiles, Jack Charlton and Alan Ball...

Tom D (Tom D.), Thursday, 7 April 2011 15:23 (fifteen years ago)

in 1966

the salmon of procrastination (darraghmac), Thursday, 7 April 2011 15:31 (fifteen years ago)

"We English will play the next 50 World Cups and we'll never win one. The people in charge at the FA played football maybe 50 or 60 years ago and still think that we can win a World Cup in the same way we did in 1966."

Sir Joseph de Barton

Tom D (Tom D.), Thursday, 7 April 2011 15:32 (fifteen years ago)

the torresscoredforchelsea website now has a fancy 'no' font and sponsors. :(

next it'll be prawn sandwiches and wags and 50 jagerbombs.

Jlloyd, I'm ready to be heartbroken (ken c), Thursday, 7 April 2011 15:38 (fifteen years ago)

then Abramovich overpaying massively for the url

Ismael Klata, Thursday, 7 April 2011 15:45 (fifteen years ago)

So looks like Gary Neville is taking over Andy Gray's old job

Number None, Friday, 8 April 2011 10:06 (fifteen years ago)

no surprise really

Although god help us all.

How will he do during utd games, dyou think?

the salmon of procrastination (darraghmac), Friday, 8 April 2011 10:10 (fifteen years ago)

Anyone >>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>> Andy Gray

Tom D (Tom D.), Friday, 8 April 2011 10:10 (fifteen years ago)

Would smash him in the face.

James Mitchell, Friday, 8 April 2011 10:12 (fifteen years ago)

well done sky in picking the one person that seems truly detestable to listen to. also good luck having him covering liverpool matches.

would it really be too much to find someone interesting and knowledgable and not hate filled?

popular gay automobile (a hoy hoy), Friday, 8 April 2011 10:21 (fifteen years ago)

yes

The Geirogeirgegege (nakhchivan), Friday, 8 April 2011 10:21 (fifteen years ago)

Yeah, the first Utd - Liverpool game of his tenure should be interesting.

Number None, Friday, 8 April 2011 10:22 (fifteen years ago)

At least he appears to have a brain

Tom D (Tom D.), Friday, 8 April 2011 10:22 (fifteen years ago)

Assume this is stopgap until he becomes Fergie's eventual successor as most annoying arsehole in football managment?

Tom D (Tom D.), Friday, 8 April 2011 10:25 (fifteen years ago)

i think he'd be alright, really, but he's not very reasonable nor balanced on certain subjects that are gonna be coming up on a daily basis

the salmon of procrastination (darraghmac), Friday, 8 April 2011 10:26 (fifteen years ago)

I agree, the only obvious alternative is Redknapp and he can only be better than him. But then I rarely see Sky so...

Ismael Klata, Friday, 8 April 2011 10:28 (fifteen years ago)

Yeah i basically never watch Sky now thanks to streaming
