Right across the park across the street from you (Portsmouth Square) is fairly decent Vietnamese place called Golden Star, up Kearny toward North Beach, there's House of Nanking and around the corner up Columbus is Brandy Ho's. None of these are great but they should do.

Walk up to Sutter and Jones and go to Canteen - for breakfast, lunch, or dinner. It's the best restaurant in the city. I had a great lunch there yesterday (Garabanzo bean soup with poached egg, and a Rock Cod sandwich, with made-to-order (!!) root beer) for about $15.

Bocadillos is also really near where you are - fancy tapas. Piperade is a few blocks away (killer Basque food).

gee, the weather here is so mild. kinda windy too. i only brought like 1 long sleeve shirt, and that green velvet jacket and the rest short sleeve.

thanks for the recommendation. the pho was so tasty and had tripe in it. yum.

i ended up getting a room at the hilton for $72 on priceline, which was only $3 more than the grant plaza - some dumpy place in chinatown. what a steal. i spent today going to expensive shops pretending to almost buy things. tried on a $3000 suit and toyed with the louis vuitton salesperson by almost putting my name on the waitlist for that ridiculous gold watersnake / leopard print / LV monogrammed bag thats like $4500.

jaxon, you guys goig out? i think im gonna try to go to tubesteak tonite or, uh, popscene. then the blowup tomorrow.

polyphonic, i guess im not a burrito fan in general. i'd rather have a taco or tostada or something without big mounds of rice in it. where good taco here?

As far as the Vice Guide goes, Tulan is the best cheap vietnamese place in the city. It's in a particularly lovely part of the Tenderloin.

It's Nob Hill in the fantasy of a dodgy real estate broker, maybe. It's at the edge of the 'Theater District'/Union Square, kitty-corner from the Bohemian Club.

Yes! Always expect it to be chilly in SF. Don't fall into the trap of so many tourists, who have to buy cheap fleeces that say "SF" on it when they get here.

two months pass...

I'm going to have one day in San Francisco proper, and it's going to be next Sunday - what should I do? I don't have much of a plan - we were thinking of trying Pizzeria Delfina, which I gather is in Mission - is there much to do around there? Maybe grabbing some cheap good Cal-Mex food somewhere would be good, too (people keep telling me about fish tacos). What's the most fun/interesting things to do on a Sunday afternoon?

There is plenty around there. Walk along Valencia St. There are tons of boutiques, plus Aquarius Records, Borderland Books, Good Vibrations. And if you feel like thrifting there are tons of places on Mission St itself.

If you like seafood, go to the Swan Oyster Depot (http://sanfrancisco.citysearch.com/profile/885734). There's also pretty good views and okay shopping around there.

If you like owls, go to the Owl Tree.

But check the schedule, it only open like Thur - Sat I think.

The ferry terminal is also a good toursity place, especially if the weather is nice, and there's lots of overpriced boutique food there too.
