i enjoyed rehab, there were so many gruesome stories, also meals which i'd missed quite a few of in the preceding months, also i persuaded an earnest hippy to shave off his beard by telling him it was 'a mask', also a washed-up nz rockstar was in there due to exhaustion and he was made to play softball and he was hopeless. i had a dear little bed in a wood panelled room and the rehab was in a thermal resort town near some mountains so in the evenings we'd sit in these lovely thermal pools while it snowed around pretending we were romantic olden days tb patients taking a cure in the alps. when we got there we had to sign forms agreeing that the government would pay for everything plus give us a $200 cheque every week to pay for extras. and by the end i was used to not drinking which was good because the tra-la days were over and i couldn't ever enjoy drinking anymore. of course if i still enjoyed it i wouldn't have gone near the joint.

estela, Wednesday, 6 April 2011 10:16 (thirteen years ago) link

i've always thought rehab would be like being cuddled all day and told you're loved no matter how much of a lie that might be, same fantasy i have about being a monk except with less of the cuddling. i get this urge to lie down on the pavement and be picked up and repaired but in all honesty here u don't get repaired you just get hosteled and down down. which is cool too but don't want kids visiting Sally Army hostel plus i don't know so many philosophers in the park bench drinking posse

i would prefer to try estela's rehab, if it's a choice btwn the two.

the salmon of procrastination (darraghmac), Wednesday, 6 April 2011 10:22 (thirteen years ago) link

same fantasy i have about being a monk

i went on a retreat to a monastery in ireland when i was about 17, me and two other students in my class. we spent 3 days in a vow of silence and then on the final day we could talk. i went for a huge walk in the mountains and met one of the monks and had a big chat, he seemed honestly one of the happiest most relaxed people i've ever spoken to.

reckon there would be huge boredom though, if you don't have the whole faith in god thing.

Will.Have.Known (Local Garda), Wednesday, 6 April 2011 10:23 (thirteen years ago) link

yeah, that's my issue. i want being a monk to be sitting around reading books and chilling all day but i couldn't fake the god stuff

cockroach shakespeare (Noodle Vague), Wednesday, 6 April 2011 10:24 (thirteen years ago) link

don't do boredom tho.

There's a paragraph in the Barthelme story "Lightning" which always makes me want to become a monk, for about 5 seconds:

talked to a Trappist monk who had been struck by lightning in 1975 while working in the fields at the order's Piffard, New York, abbey. Having been given permission by his superior to speak to Connors, the small, bald monk was positively loquacious. He told Connors that the one deprivation he had felt keenly, as a member of a monastic order, was the absence of rock music. "Why?" he asked rhetorically. "I'm too old for this music, it's for kids, I know it, you know it, makes no sense at all. But I love it, I simply love it. And after I was struck the community bought me this Sony Walkman." Proudly he showed Connors the small device with its delicate earphones. "A special dispensation. I guess they figured I was near-to-dead, therefore it was all right to bend the Rule a bit. I simply love it. Have you heard the Cars?" Standing in a beet field with the brown-habited monk Connors felt the depth of the man's happiness and wondered if he himself ought to rethink his attitude toward Christianity. It would not be so bad to spend one's days pulling beets in the warm sun while listening to the Cars and then retire to one's cell at night to read St. Augustine and catch up on Rod Stewart and the B-52's.

Also Estela's rehab sounds a hell of a lot better than the ones my mother's been in but maybe that's sue in part to diffs between US/AUS healthcare sys? In order to go to nice ones here you have to pay out the wazoo.

ENBB, Thursday, 7 April 2011 14:35 (thirteen years ago) link

yeah i'm not fucked up enough for NHS rehab and i'm not really on speaking terms with any higher powers so i have horrible feeling i will just have to tough this sobriety thing out by myself/get chained to the bed every few days when the thirst kicks in

She is the best, THE BEST. Maybe she's growing out of the monster photos that I remember but her teeth used to be sharp and pointy and her curls go everywhere and are RED and she always struck me as someone who would get close to you and then bite and relish it completely without any attack of conscience and you'd never see it coming.

So basically I was otm w/r/t adorably cheerful sociopathy.
