tehresa, Sunday, 3 April 2011 04:04 (fifteen years ago)

tried on my sister's newton shoes this weekend (encourage midfoot strike but a little bit more of a shoe than the barefoot type shoes). they are kinda neat and i would love to try some out! went to their site and saw that they retail for like $150. ouchhhhh.

tehresa, Tuesday, 5 April 2011 00:33 (fifteen years ago)

Which model of newtons were they?

Jeff, Tuesday, 5 April 2011 01:12 (fifteen years ago)

not 100% sure but based on the images on website i am guessing this one.

tehresa, Tuesday, 5 April 2011 01:17 (fifteen years ago)

pushed through for a 27 mi run. forgot to bandaid my nipples and may lose a toenail from it, but i feel pretty good.

jeff, Tuesday, 5 April 2011 04:55 (fifteen years ago)

Didn't you just run 13.1 miles for the first time like two weeks ago??

Jeff, Tuesday, 5 April 2011 11:52 (fifteen years ago)

6 tonight, feel slightly better, but super sore it band again. Last big week of training before taper. I need it.

Jeff, Wednesday, 6 April 2011 03:59 (fifteen years ago)

i am gonna copy & paste a story of mine from the Pringles Poll! thread b/c no one appreciates it over there ;_;

here is my 'pringles story'

i was doing my first ultramarathon last year, a 37 mile footrace in 85 degree texas weather on a rocky/hilly trail that started at 7pm and went overnight (i finished close to 5-6am). i was close to mile 30, absolutely fucking wiped out and weak and felt like i was gonna die, and sat down at an aid station and this lady goes "you have to go on... you're almost there! here, eat these, they help" and she handed me like 12-15 pringles and i ate them all. perfect runners' food for ultramarathons-- super salty, super carbohydrate packed, high calorie to low mass ratio, and you dont even have to fucking chew them, you just smash them against the roof of your mouth with your tongue and they shatter and you can swallow them. trust me, it sounds stupid but it gets really hard to chew/swallow once your body realizes you've been running for 9 fucking hours and basically shuts down your digestive system to focus on other maintenance. anyway, i ate all the pringles, washed them down with a cup of coca-cola (i havent had soda in about a decade, ever, other than a blanket exception for long trail runs; that shit also works wonders out there), changed socks and shirt, and after about 5 minutes suddenly i felt fucking incredible. got up, shuffled around the trails for another hour and a half at like 5:00am and BOOM-- THIRTY SEVEN FUCKING MILES.

they were original pringles btw, so i voted original.

and i dont normally eat pringles, or soda like i said, but ill eat or drink anything on a run so long as it keeps me moving

yep, two weeks ago. ran 20 this saturday for the first time and then 27 yesterday. i'm not getting much faster but i'm definitely getting stronger and cutting weight. oddly enough, my muscles are less tired / stiff in the morning than they were when i first ran 7 or 13. things feel good.

jeff, Wednesday, 6 April 2011 04:10 (fifteen years ago)

(xp) nice story. i'll have to give pringles a shot. i'm sure they'll go well with my bottle of chia.

jeff, Wednesday, 6 April 2011 04:12 (fifteen years ago)

I admire your total disregard of gradually increasing your distance. I probably would have done the same if I could

Jeff, Wednesday, 6 April 2011 11:44 (fifteen years ago)

Pringles needs to make a gel.

Jeff, Wednesday, 6 April 2011 11:47 (fifteen years ago)

hahaha O_O

jeff, Wednesday, 6 April 2011 23:31 (fifteen years ago)

I'm back running. Totally out of shape, running about 2 miles a day for the past week, lol. I've noticed it takes me about 3 months to get where I want to be, 4-5 miles at 8:45ish pace. But, yay anyway.

Welcome back, we missed you.

Jeff, Thursday, 7 April 2011 01:22 (fifteen years ago)

20 miles today in 3:30. Not bad considering it took me nearly 4 hours to run 20 miles in the Chicago Marathon.

Jeff, Saturday, 9 April 2011 18:33 (fifteen years ago)

Feel surprisingly good today. Maybe I'm finally getting used to these distances.

Jeff, Sunday, 10 April 2011 17:02 (fifteen years ago)

nice!

jeff, Sunday, 10 April 2011 19:25 (fifteen years ago)

apparently the nike watch has accuracy and connection issues so I'm going to get a garmin... but which one? the fr 110, 210, or 310xt or even the old/bulky but cheap and feature rich 305?

anyone got any of these or a strong view on which one I should go for?

thetan is cheatin (cozen), Monday, 18 April 2011 17:33 (fifteen years ago)

I have the 310xt and like it a lot. Depends on how much you want to spend. The 305 has almost all the same features of the 310 and can be found on the cheap. The 205 has all the same features of the 305 except isn't compatabile with a heart rate monitor, and can be found even cheaper. I'm not as big of a fan of the smaller Garmin models. Would rather have the big data display.

Jeff, Monday, 18 April 2011 18:10 (fifteen years ago)

i wonder if seandalai made it to the london marathon yesterday after his injury issues? hopefully he'll pop in to report. my friend avril finished in 2h54m o_O

jed_, Monday, 18 April 2011 19:36 (fifteen years ago)

305 just looks bulky online... I have small wrists and it ain't bad at all.

the girl from spirea x (f. hazel), Monday, 18 April 2011 19:48 (fifteen years ago)

2h45

!!!

thetan is cheatin (cozen), Monday, 18 April 2011 19:48 (fifteen years ago)

2h54m20s iirc!

jed_, Monday, 18 April 2011 19:54 (fifteen years ago)

jeez. was reading an article yesterday about how much more it will take for someone to shave the last four minutes off the record and run a marathon in under two hours and i was just all O_O how do i shave three hours off my time...

in other news, my car got wrecked so i am considering just running most places, if i can. has anyone ever run with a backpack before? seems bouncy and cumbersome. should i get a backpack with a waist strap?

jeff, Monday, 18 April 2011 20:17 (fifteen years ago)

seems bouncy and cumbersome

depends on the size of it. I run with a medium-size backpack (not like a hiking rucksack, just a schoolbag sized adidas one), and I just pull the arm straps pretty tight. Holds it in place nicely.

scotstvo, Monday, 18 April 2011 20:44 (fifteen years ago)

yeah i think that's my only option at the moment. maybe i will see if the running store has something snug. going to run a quick 3mi over to a friend's house and then go see a show tonight. good times.

jeff, Monday, 18 April 2011 21:39 (fifteen years ago)

How do you handle the sweating?

Jeff, Monday, 18 April 2011 21:56 (fifteen years ago)

i had my favourite run so far a few days back - along the canal and back along the river walk after running round the park. 5 miles in total and only stopped briefly on two occasions on the way back (peanuts to most of you but i was proud of it!).

thing is the sky was amazing, one of those beautiful blue, pink, mauve and grey glasgow skies which really lifted my spirits... then, just as i was slowing down for the home strait, beach house's Zebra came on the ipod. i had to keep going until the song finished, spirits totally lifted, really buzzing by the end!

:D

jed_, Monday, 18 April 2011 22:00 (fifteen years ago)

i wonder if seandalai made it to the london marathon yesterday after his injury issues? hopefully he'll pop in to report.

I realised some time in March that I had no chance of getting fit quickly enough...I got demoralised, stopped even trying to train and started avoiding this thread. I hope my injury has passed by now (through lack of use if nothing else) and I'm going to get back into training this week. I'll do an autumn marathon (Dublin?) and hopefully run London again next year.

Stars of the Lidl (seandalai), Monday, 18 April 2011 22:06 (fifteen years ago)

damn, sean. onwards!

jed_, Monday, 18 April 2011 22:21 (fifteen years ago)

How do you handle the sweating?

well i'll have a change of clothes in the bag, so that will help some. they know i'm running there and they're supportive of the comedy of my situation, so it will be fine. we're just going to a smoky club anyway, so maybe my funk will give me some cred.

i had to keep going until the song finished, spirits totally lifted, really buzzing by the end!

i love moments like this. i had one where i had run into a storm and came out of it right as i hit the dreamy end of LCD Soundsystem 45:33. clear blue skies and the rain tapering off. it was really awesome.

jeff, Monday, 18 April 2011 22:52 (fifteen years ago)

I have a Jekyll and Hyde thing going on with posting to this thread the CHIPS vs. FRIES one.

the girl from spirea x (f. hazel), Tuesday, 19 April 2011 00:49 (fifteen years ago)

*and*

the girl from spirea x (f. hazel), Tuesday, 19 April 2011 00:50 (fifteen years ago)

I'm dripping sweat after even the shortest runs, so I've never been able yo handle the run to things or events. It would be convenient thiough.

Jeff, Tuesday, 19 April 2011 01:40 (fifteen years ago)

i usually get my first serious sweat about 30 minutes in and i tried to run faster to get there (2.5mi in 16mins) but the sweat broke as soon as i got there. it was no trouble though, as i just took a quick shower at my friends' place. went to the show and had a lot of beer and the run home was drunken, uphill and just as fast. i enjoyed it. probably not the best solution for my carlessness, but it is kinda fun in certain situations.

jeff, Tuesday, 19 April 2011 07:35 (fifteen years ago)

i'm also back...my shins and ankles are sore still but i think the muscles are strengthening. i've been trying to adjust my stride so as not to hammer as much pressure on my right ankle, so a lot wider stride with more use of my upper legs, it seems to be working.

due to the break my distance is affected a bit, i've been doing 4 miles every second day. i did play football last night though which could lead to all sorts of other injury!

amazing weather for it lately, it's so good running in just shorts and t-shirt (apart from having nowhere to keep my money)

rip. this woman was synonymous with the ny marathon in my mind, she dominated it when i was a kid.

~~buying vibrams~~

jeff, Thursday, 21 April 2011 22:17 (fifteen years ago)

Interesting. What do you run in currently?

Jeff, Thursday, 21 April 2011 23:31 (fifteen years ago)

something similar to this:

http://www.moon-boots.com/es/images/l/nike_dart-7-junior_grau-schwarz_gray-black.jpg

cheap nikes, basically. definitely plan to take it easy with the vibrams for a little bit until i get used to them. got these:

http://www.csneaker.com/wp-content/uploads/2010/06/21/VIBRAM-FIVEFINGER-Five-finger-bikila-shoe.jpg

in fact, maybe i will go for a short run right now.

jeff, Friday, 22 April 2011 00:00 (fifteen years ago)

52:03 for a 10K race today, unofficially. Not bad for a race I was supposed to take it easy in.

Jeff, Saturday, 23 April 2011 16:53 (fifteen years ago)

So hard to take it easy in a race when you're feeling good.

Jeff, Saturday, 23 April 2011 16:53 (fifteen years ago)

ran my first decent run in the vibrams today -- 6.6mi, 8:50min/mi. first time i've cracked 9min/mi. gonna be sore tomorrow i bet.

jeff, Monday, 25 April 2011 01:50 (fifteen years ago)

I keep forgetting that I'm supposed to run a marathon in a week.

Jeff, Saturday, 30 April 2011 04:22 (fifteen years ago)

ran 4 miles today, mostly back from injury now i just need to build my fitness back up. summery heat really saps the strength too but my pace was great today and i got some serious endorphin rushes!

Will.Have.Known (Local Garda), Tuesday, 3 May 2011 11:48 (fifteen years ago)

Welcome back!

In did two runs while I was in Florida that were horrible. Too hot and I was sick. Had to stop every half mile to catch my breath and blow massive snot rockets.

Marathon in 4 days.

Jeff, Tuesday, 3 May 2011 12:22 (fifteen years ago)

yeah a friend of mine did the berlin half marathon and got hospitalised with dehydration, he collapsed after the finish. kinda scary, he woke up barely knowing his name or where he was etc.

not worried about that really but having began running about last september, heat is a whole new thing for me. mostly it's great as no jacket etc and no snot freezing to my face etc!

good luck with the mara, i had to miss that berlin half cos of doing a play but hope to do my first half marathon this summer instead.
