NHS guidelines suggest that by two years old, toddlers can say around 100 words and start putting them into short sentences.
Ms Douglas questioned whether somebody with just 100 words at their disposal would be able to form sentences with full grammatical syntax structures.
"Perhaps they would just concentrate on nouns or verbs like 'football', 'kick' or 'harder'," she says.

Parkin admitted his fitness was below 100 per cent because of a freak golfing accident during the build-up campaign in Austria."I was driving a golf cart, but didn't realise how steep the hill was," he said. "One thing led to another and it ended up on its roof."

Just started the reading the piece on Xavi in The Blizzard, and it's just struck me - wouldn't it be great if he, or any player for that matter, could wear shades or a headband with a tiny camera built-in so you could see the game from his perspective. That'd be well cool.

Google have finished with their street view cameras now, maybe Xavi could wear one of those for a 360º view.
Better use of swoopycam™ too, I wonder why it's never made its way to this country?

That's a weird top five from Holt. Nasri, Bale, Berbatov, Hernandez, Tevez much?
― Matt DC, Thursday, 31 March 2011 17:07 (fifteen years ago)
And if you're going to include Scott Parker you can sure as hell make a case for Charlie Adam.
― Matt DC, Thursday, 31 March 2011 17:08 (fifteen years ago)
Hernandez surely just hasen't played enough to make the list? Also VDV & Modric > Bale ffs. Not so long ago I saw Redknapp's case for Bale as POTS in The Sun and the only case he could make for him as the best player in the PREMIERSHIP was a game where Spurs LOST 4-3 in EUROPE. Didn't use 1 example from the league.
― Nult AGL (a hoy hoy), Thursday, 31 March 2011 17:12 (fifteen years ago)
Obviously Holt is mental. I mean the whole crux of the article is that he won't vote for Nani cos of what a horrible person he is and then he puts Terry on his list.
― Number None, Thursday, 31 March 2011 17:15 (fifteen years ago)
And yeah, Bale has done nothing in the prem
Plus the five guys Matt cites have been relatively quiet the last few weeks. The player of the year should be the guy who's played out of his skin the fortnight before the award is announced.
― Ismael Klata, Thursday, 31 March 2011 17:15 (fifteen years ago)
Nani would make my 5. With Nasri, Tevez, VDV and... Gary Cahill? Well I did not expect that to be the name I would easily type.
― Nult AGL (a hoy hoy), Thursday, 31 March 2011 17:17 (fifteen years ago)
Bale has done nothing in the prem
Not convinced this is true and not convinced it's relevant either: why should the player of the season be chosen purely on league performances? I'd have thought VDV and Bale had both done enough to be in the running. And Nani, fwiw.
― in a wonderful balloon! (Nasty, Brutish & Short), Thursday, 31 March 2011 18:12 (fifteen years ago)
I thought it was just for the league but i'll stand corrected if it isn't.
― Number None, Thursday, 31 March 2011 18:16 (fifteen years ago)
i'm sure it is.
He had a very good run in the league in the calendar year last year but since p neville's cheap shot he's not been in the running.

this definitely, but there must be scope to enhance this considerably: there was a documentary several years ago about sex and the male gaze where cameras were built into (i assume) glasses that men wore. so actual eye movements linked to objects viewed. would be interesting to apply this tech to sport rather than hackneyed debates about the male gaze.

"We are actively seeking a naming partner if we move to a new stadium but will definitely not consider renaming Anfield," said Reds chief Ian Ayre.
So, NAMING RIGHTS THREAD good for another year then.

"The real power Liverpool could do for us, and for the Premier League, is if there was a way they could nurture foreign players from Asia," said Laws.
"The markets in Asia and the Middle East are so nationalistic, they are very proud about their countries."One appearance from a player, say from Dubai in the Premier League, and you'd have the whole of Dubai watching it."
"One appearance from a player, say from Dubai in the Premier League, and you'd have the whole of Dubai watching it."
However, Laws thought it was "not that important" if Liverpool once again miss out on a place in European club football's most prestigious competition because matches are played when the bank's target audience in Asia is asleep. He also said that the club's struggles on and off the pitch this season had actually benefited his company."I would have thought that Liverpool have had more exposure around the world this season than anybody else......without the turmoil at the club there wouldn't have been [the publicity]," he said."They are a mid-table team with an outside chance of getting into the Europa League again."

Second quotes are from the shirt sponsor, btw.
And, you know, if it was someone from Etihad saying Man City needed to sign a player from Abu Dhabi to make them more money, or F&C Investments saying it was good for Birmingham to be in a relegation dogfight because it meant they were in the papers more, or Autonomy saying in public Spurs were a mid-table side and no more then you wouldn't be able to move for the lulz around here.
And, of course, this thread title.
― I said Omorotic, not homo-erotic (aldo), Friday, 1 April 2011 06:44 (fifteen years ago)
yeah people here universally love liverpool.
i read that story and i don't give a toss. a bank wants to make money, how shocking. here was i thinking standard chartered knitted hats for the elderly and were having a particular fine few years due to the recent cold snaps, hence they sponsored a football club for 80m.

arbeloa seems cool, and he loves crouch
"During the World Cup we were on the PlayStation constantly," Arbeloa smiles. "It was always el Chori [Raúl Albiol] and me against Sergio Ramos and Jesús Navas. They were Spain, we were England and it got pretty intense. We always put Crouch up front – and he scored loads. We bought ourselves England shirts. You'd be there in the Spain hotel and there were two guys in white, "Gerrard" and "Crouch" on the back.
"Spurs might not be as famous as Chelsea or Manchester United but they will be very dangerous," he continues. "I wasn't pleased with the draw because it was easy but because I wanted to play in England. And when I saw Spurs, I said to el Chori: 'We're going to get Crouch shirts, so we can play in them – real ones, this time.' It'll be a bit big on me, but still ..."

Were they at Liverpool at the same time?
― Matt DC, Friday, 1 April 2011 15:44 (fifteen years ago)
Yes, but only for a season and a half. Crouch signed before 05/06 and left after 07/08, Arbeloa signed January 07 and left after 08/09. That match at Barca was actually Arbeloa's full debut.

Gavin Law, the group head of corporate affairs for Liverpool's shirt sponsor, Standard Chartered, has said the bank would like the club to sign Asian players, in order to exploit one of the bank's largest markets.
"We would love the club to have players of nationalities from the markets in which we operate," Mr Law said. "They are not going to get them from all 75 but if they could sign some – if they could get a Korean, Indian, Chinese player – look what Park [Ji-sung] has done for [Manchester] United in terms of coverage in Korea.

The most interesting stat I saw today is that if West Brom take any points tomorrow then Kenny will have been less successful than Roy at Liverpool (current stats 7w 4d 4l 15 goals vs 13w 9d 9l 31 goals - ok it's twice the value but near identical in ratio).
― I said Omorotic, not homo-erotic (aldo), Friday, 1 April 2011 18:14 (fifteen years ago)
