my three big running spots:
- Town Lake (i work within 1/4 mile of the trail; head down on weekends for 1-2 ten mile loops)- Walnut Creek Park (~5 min drive from my home; great 11 mile trail loop, moderately hilly, more so than Town Lake, but not as hilly as...)- Emma Long Park (this is a couple minutes west of 620 and 2222; hilliest trail in Austin that i've found, main loop is 6 miles, and honestly it's off limits to pedestrians [it's a motocross/mountain biking park] so when i head out there, it's at like 6am or earlier before anyone else hits the park, lest i be "discovered" - anyway, if i do that 6 mile loop 2-3 times, i am WHIPPED)

Thanks! I'll give Walnut Creek park a spin this weekend. 11 miles is the perfect distance.

map here: http://www.austinridgeriders.com/documents/Walnut%20Creek%20Metro%20Park_Kiosk.pdf
for the 11 miler, stay on the yellow trail w/ blue dots. if you're going counter-clockwise overall (as shown by the arrows on the yellow/blue trail) there are signposts at most trail intersections with a blue square/diamond that point in the right direction to keep on that path. probably also good to print the map yr first time out there (i certainly did)

13 miles sunday, 6 miles yesterday, sore today
― jeff, Tuesday, 29 March 2011 19:51 (fifteen years ago)
hahaha, wow, those trails are definitely more complex than town lake. maybe I'll walk around all day first and then try running them. looks like a great park, though.

i'd say i could give you a tour but that sounds kinda creepy ^__________^
― hey ilxor, thanks for contributing, glad you stopped by (ilxor), Wednesday, 30 March 2011 02:57 (fifteen years ago)
I'll take a running tour on the slim chance I ever set foot in Austin again.
― Jeff, Wednesday, 30 March 2011 03:14 (fifteen years ago)
whoa buddy do you have something against austin??
― hey ilxor, thanks for contributing, glad you stopped by (ilxor), Wednesday, 30 March 2011 03:24 (fifteen years ago)
Ha, not really. I've only been once, went to SXSW about 8 years ago but haven't had a reason to go back. I liked it, really. I wish I had been a runner them.

can't stand nocera :/
― jeff, Wednesday, 30 March 2011 09:18 (fifteen years ago)
i'm going to the barkley marathons this weekend, the race Engle wrote about for Runner's World this week:
http://www.runnersworld.com/cda/microsite/article/0,8029,s6-238-511--13905-1-1X2X3-4,00.html
"going to," mind you. i'll be watching, not running.
― mte, Wednesday, 30 March 2011 11:27 (fifteen years ago)
no way! soooo jealous :/
"running" and "race" are generous words, btw, in reference to a course that makes world-class runners average 25-35 minute miles
― hey ilxor, thanks for contributing, glad you stopped by (ilxor), Wednesday, 30 March 2011 14:04 (fifteen years ago)
why did i decide to go running in 83 deg heat
― jeff, Wednesday, 30 March 2011 21:48 (fifteen years ago)
I'd take that right now. In DC and the weather sucks.
― Jeff, Wednesday, 30 March 2011 21:55 (fifteen years ago)
so cold and damp :(
― tehresa, Wednesday, 30 March 2011 22:04 (fifteen years ago)
it was ok but i had to stop after 7 mi because i didn't have enough water and i hadn't put on any sunscreen. now i am tan and dehydrated
― jeff, Wednesday, 30 March 2011 22:12 (fifteen years ago)
I'm still going to get out and run tomorrow morning. Nothing fancy, just around all the monuments and things.
― Jeff, Wednesday, 30 March 2011 22:31 (fifteen years ago)
Assuming I don't drink too much tonight.
― Jeff, Wednesday, 30 March 2011 22:35 (fifteen years ago)
going for a run after one or two beers feels great, but after three it becomes unpleasant.
― the girl from spirea x (f. hazel), Wednesday, 30 March 2011 23:09 (fifteen years ago)
I did 5 miles immediately after three beers and some charcuterie a couple of weeks ago. Not my best run ever.
― Jeff, Wednesday, 30 March 2011 23:54 (fifteen years ago)
Wait, that's exactly what I've eaten tonight. Plus oysters. http://twitpic.com/4f479u
― Jeff, Wednesday, 30 March 2011 23:55 (fifteen years ago)
three beers and a run makes me feel like a washing machine, all those suds sloshing around in there.
― the girl from spirea x (f. hazel), Thursday, 31 March 2011 00:21 (fifteen years ago)
I thought you were talking about the night before, not immediately before! Running after drinking anything sounds muy sloshy to me.
― Ralpharina (La Lechera), Thursday, 31 March 2011 00:22 (fifteen years ago)
La Lechera, two weeks ago it was immediately before. I had dinner at Bin 36, then went for a 5 mile run when I got home. This time, it will merely be the night before. I think it will be better this time.
― Jeff, Thursday, 31 March 2011 00:36 (fifteen years ago)
tehresa, please make DC sunny and 60 degrees when I wake up in the morning.
― Jeff, Thursday, 31 March 2011 00:37 (fifteen years ago)
Night before, don't sweat it! Even I could handle that.
― Ralpharina (La Lechera), Thursday, 31 March 2011 00:47 (fifteen years ago)
where'd you eat, jeff? that looks tasty!
i want sunny and 60, too. so cold. making me really unmotivated and will probably just settle for going to the gym tomorrow.
― tehresa, Thursday, 31 March 2011 01:08 (fifteen years ago)

now that summertime is approaching, I am going to resume my margarita triathlons... run for an hour, swim for an hour in barton springs, and then drink margaritas for an hour at trudy's.
― the girl from spirea x (f. hazel), Thursday, 31 March 2011 02:12 (fifteen years ago)
i love this.
― tehresa, Thursday, 31 March 2011 02:15 (fifteen years ago)
i am going ot steal it when my pool opens but i am lazy and might go to like 30 or 45 min each.
― tehresa, Thursday, 31 March 2011 02:16 (fifteen years ago)
the key is to maximize the alcohol multiplier you get by running in 90-degree heat, jumping into a spring with 70-degree water and then downing a margarita. your BAC and calorie count stays low, but your brain gets lit up like a christmas tree.
― the girl from spirea x (f. hazel), Thursday, 31 March 2011 02:26 (fifteen years ago)
count me in!!! O_O
― hey ilxor, thanks for contributing, glad you stopped by (ilxor), Thursday, 31 March 2011 03:20 (fifteen years ago)
Didn't run this morning, sleep won out. I suppose it was asking too much to have 2 morning runs in a week. Will try and get one in late tonight.
― Jeff, Thursday, 31 March 2011 14:32 (fifteen years ago)
anyone have recommendations for in-ear/isolation headphones to use while running? my pair of ER-6i phones just crapped out on me and i'm wondering if there's a good option less than $80 before i spend that again (i mean they lasted several years but STILL)
― hey ilxor, thanks for contributing, glad you stopped by (ilxor), Thursday, 31 March 2011 14:57 (fifteen years ago)
20 mi run, 11:30 pace
so tired
― jeff, Saturday, 2 April 2011 23:54 (fifteen years ago)
wow! :-)
― jed_, Sunday, 3 April 2011 00:07 (fifteen years ago)

I tried and failed at 18 today. New pain, achilles.
― Jeff, Sunday, 3 April 2011 01:00 (fifteen years ago)
so this looks really fun... i think i am too chicken to attempt it.
― tehresa, Sunday, 3 April 2011 04:04 (fifteen years ago)
tried on my sister's newton shoes this weekend (encourage midfoot strike but a little bit more of a shoe than the barefoot type shoes). they are kinda neat and i would love to try some out! went to their site and saw that they retail for like $150. ouchhhhh.
― tehresa, Tuesday, 5 April 2011 00:33 (fifteen years ago)
Which model of newtons were they?
― Jeff, Tuesday, 5 April 2011 01:12 (fifteen years ago)
not 100% sure but based on the images on website i am guessing this one.
― tehresa, Tuesday, 5 April 2011 01:17 (fifteen years ago)
pushed through for a 27 mi run. forgot to bandaid my nipples and may lose a toenail from it, but i feel pretty good.
― jeff, Tuesday, 5 April 2011 04:55 (fifteen years ago)
Didn't you just run 13.1 miles for the first time like two weeks ago??
― Jeff, Tuesday, 5 April 2011 11:52 (fifteen years ago)
6 tonight, feel slightly better, but super sore it band again. Last big week of training before taper. I need it.

i am gonna copy & paste a story of mine from the Pringles Poll! thread b/c no one appreciates it over there ;_;
here is my 'pringles story'i was doing my first ultramarathon last year, a 37 mile footrace in 85 degree texas weather on a rocky/hilly trail that started at 7pm and went overnight (i finished close to 5-6am). i was close to mile 30, absolutely fucking wiped out and weak and felt like i was gonna die, and sat down at an aid station and this lady goes "you have to go on... you're almost there! here, eat these, they help" and she handed me like 12-15 pringles and i ate them all. perfect runners' food for ultramarathons-- super salty, super carbohydrate packed, high calorie to low mass ratio, and you dont even have to fucking chew them, you just smash them against the roof of your mouth with your tongue and they shatter and you can swallow them. trust me, it sounds stupid but it gets really hard to chew/swallow once your body realizes you've been running for 9 fucking hours and basically shuts down your digestive system to focus on other maintenance. anyway, i ate all the pringles, washed them down with a cup of coca-cola (i havent had soda in about a decade, ever, other than a blanket exception for long trail runs; that shit also works wonders out there), changed socks and shirt, and after about 5 minutes suddenly i felt fucking incredible. got up, shuffled around the trails for another hour and a half at like 5:00am and BOOM-- THIRTY SEVEN FUCKING MILES.they were original pringles btw, so i voted original.and i dont normally eat pringles, or soda like i said, but ill eat or drink anything on a run so long as it keeps me moving― hey ilxor, thanks for contributing, glad you stopped by (ilxor), Tuesday, April 5, 2011 10:51 PM (10 minutes ago)

yep, two weeks ago. ran 20 this saturday for the first time and then 27 yesterday. i'm not getting much faster but i'm definitely getting stronger and cutting weight. oddly enough, my muscles are less tired / stiff in the morning than they were when i first ran 7 or 13. things feel good.
― jeff, Wednesday, 6 April 2011 04:10 (fifteen years ago)
(xp) nice story. i'll have to give pringles a shot. i'm sure they'll go well with my bottle of chia.
