eek sorry about gramercy tavern, max. the last time i went was for the prix fixe, and it was great.
― lauren, Wednesday, 10 December 2008 00:54 (fifteen years ago) link
max is right about the atmosphere at the tavern, in my experience
i just had an awesome pumpkin pie-oh-my at the shack. i'm not sure it's my favorite of the 3, burgers and fries-wise, tho.
― gabbneb, Wednesday, 10 December 2008 00:57 (fifteen years ago) link
no worries lauren! thanks for the recco anyway.
― beyonc'e (max), Wednesday, 10 December 2008 01:43 (fifteen years ago) link
apparently five guys fries aren't consistent between locations. the ones in ATL suck, they are always limp and underdone. I've had them good in DC or NoVA or wherever it was and they were better. The burgers are good but not nearly as good as Shake Shack. Whataburger is mediocre at best. IN and Out is comparable to Five Guys.
We are getting Flip Burger in ATL this week...supposedly coming up yer way to NYC eventually. First time for everything. Or, as I like to say, they can ruin it here and make it better up there. Oh wait, you guys just got Joel's new restaurant up there...can't remember where he is tho. Heard it wasn't that good.

srs about goodburger btw, ppl should try it, they do a good job
― beyonc'e (max), Wednesday, 10 December 2008 01:45 (fifteen years ago) link
goodburger is good. so is joe's bestburger. i wish they'd expand, instead of having one restaurant in flushing that's like the prototype for a franchise that never was.

― Lamp, Wednesday, 10 December 2008 01:55 (fifteen years ago) link
it's great, but i haven't had green curry there. i think jungle curry is the only one i've had. i like arunee a lot, too, but opinions on that place are more mixed.
― lauren, Wednesday, 10 December 2008 02:02 (fifteen years ago) link
i LOVE sripraphai. get the crispy pork & chinese broccoli appetizer, it's the best shit ever.
― ian, Wednesday, 10 December 2008 03:42 (fifteen years ago) link
Zabb's Crispy Pork and Chinese Broccoli is better!
My favorite dish from Srip is the sausage salad appetizer. I get it medium spicy because I'm a wimp.
Their chicken massaman is also unlike any I've had anywhere else, where it's usually just the same old strips of chicken. At srip it's like a stew, the chicken is big chunks of thigh I guess, whatever, big solid pieces of chicken that just tears apart with a spoon.

eh re: burgers, i'm not saying that five guys isn't fine, i'm just saying that i'd rather just shell out the extra couple bucks and get a really good burger at a non-fast-food joint. i don't do burgers at lunch or other times that fast food might be appropriate, and there's no way in hell i'm going out of my way to go to a five guys or an in-and-out or a whattaburger (they are "ok") or shake shake or whatever for dinner time.
only exception is road trips during which i eat hella wendy's and sonic like it is going out of business.
^^^ so when i say these things are just ok keep in mind that i am a burger snob unless i am in a car.

i had no idea the correlation between burgers and boobs was so strong
― mookieproof, Wednesday, 10 December 2008 18:05 (fifteen years ago) link
I agree with Pauls and Donovans. Haven't had the others. I always end up getting sausage or something when I go to Bonnies.
I used to really like Grand Canyon in brooklyn but it's been years since I've had them.
Donovan's has to be ordered medium-rare (well, all burgers should be), when they're medium they're not that special.
And for those with wheat allergies, get the Shephard's Pie. It's basically a Donovan's burger ground up with some mashed potatos and peas and carrots.
I go there a lot, I live around the corner.

Every since a Five Guys opened up around the corner from me, I've been feeling like I'm on the path to personally proving that correlation

P.S. If any of you work or frequently pass anywhere around Lexington and 25th, please eat at this new Vietnamese sandwich place called Baoguette, because it is cheap and delicious and I need it to stay in business for work-lunch purposes. So far I have eaten there about 50% of the total days they've been open.

there's a sausage option at bonnies? are we thinking of the same bonnies? on fifth ave in park slope? i have never had anything but the burger & wings there. wings are also delish.
