Doesn't evernote cost like 5/mo? What does it even do?

mink della reese (Stevie D(eux)), Thursday, 24 March 2011 15:28 (fifteen years ago)

I use the free version. It has a data transfer limit, but I've never approached it.

simplenote + notational velocity Changed My Life

just woke up (lukas), Thursday, 24 March 2011 15:48 (fifteen years ago)

Yeah I really really need a good to do/grocery list/checklist/on-the-fly mixtape idea/note taking app but I refuse to pay, like, 6.99 for one. Simplenote, then?

mink della reese (Stevie D(eux)), Thursday, 24 March 2011 15:50 (fifteen years ago)

Also I really have no need to sync to other computers or devices so idk if i'm missing the point?

mink della reese (Stevie D(eux)), Thursday, 24 March 2011 15:51 (fifteen years ago)

i was going to make a joke about my life revolving around note-taking but now that i think about it ...

just woke up (lukas), Thursday, 24 March 2011 15:51 (fifteen years ago)

simplenote will do that well, yeah

just woke up (lukas), Thursday, 24 March 2011 15:52 (fifteen years ago)

turn off web syncing if you don't need it i guess. seems dangerous, no backups.

just woke up (lukas), Thursday, 24 March 2011 15:55 (fifteen years ago)

Actually, web syncing is fine. It's, like, iPad/Outlook/Thunderbird/iCal/etc shit I don't need

mink della reese (Stevie D(eux)), Thursday, 24 March 2011 15:57 (fifteen years ago)

I don't know how involved you all are with your lists, but ShopShop works well for me.

It saves all my data on a "back" screen, so I don't have to re-enter every item of my grocery list each week.

I can move items up and down the list, in the order I want them.

And I can check the items off as I go, eventually (hopefully) returning to an empty slate by the time I reach the register.

I've taken quick notes on the fly before too, though I wouldn't suggest using it for that.

I use Grocery Gadget for shopping lists. It works good because it syncs with a web interface and also if the app is installed on other devices. So if I go to the grocery store and get stuff, I check it off, it syncs with my wife's phone, so she won't get the same stuff if she goes to the store. And we can both add items to it and notify each other if there are changes.

Jeff, Thursday, 24 March 2011 16:26 (fifteen years ago)

has anyone ported emacs to ios yet?

diamonddave85, Thursday, 24 March 2011 16:38 (fifteen years ago)

What I think I'll love about Simplenote is that it will synch to an online account, which is what is missing from the notes app that came w/ the iPhone (I think it did, not sure). That's a game-changer for me, to be able to work on notes from PC and computer without having to wait to sync via cable.

Jeff, why Evernote instead of Simplenote? Also, do you have some standard for which one you use for particular stuff?

nobody wants my Diva Cup ;_; (Jesse), Thursday, 24 March 2011 17:45 (fifteen years ago)

Because you can take picture and voice notes too. And it uses OCR on the pics, so if you take a pic of text, that text is searchable.

Jeff, Thursday, 24 March 2011 17:48 (fifteen years ago)

Whoa (Joey Lawrence voice).

What about my second question? Why do you use both?

nobody wants my Diva Cup ;_; (Jesse), Thursday, 24 March 2011 17:51 (fifteen years ago)

Because I like productivity tools and can never decide what works best for me.

Jeff, Thursday, 24 March 2011 17:54 (fifteen years ago)

Which is unproductive.

Jeff, Thursday, 24 March 2011 17:54 (fifteen years ago)

I love Notational Velocity for all my note taking.

I use TeuxDeux for to do. Simple and functional.

dan selzer, Thursday, 24 March 2011 17:56 (fifteen years ago)

Oh it's pretty too!! But also costs too much :(

mink della reese (Stevie D(eux)), Thursday, 24 March 2011 18:04 (fifteen years ago)

Evernote is good because it works on all platforms. Web, windows desktop, Mac desktop, iOs. All of which I use.

Jeff, Thursday, 24 March 2011 18:06 (fifteen years ago)

I don't mind paying 3 dollars for an app that I use every day!

dan selzer, Thursday, 24 March 2011 18:24 (fifteen years ago)

iphone notes app will sync to ur gmail if u have it configured

diamonddave85, Thursday, 24 March 2011 18:54 (fifteen years ago)

It does, but only through the cable. Plus it creates a new version of each note each time you sync instead of updating each note.

nobody wants my Diva Cup ;_; (Jesse), Thursday, 24 March 2011 19:02 (fifteen years ago)

mine syncs through the net, u gotta have note sync enabled in the gmail mail account prefs tho

diamonddave85, Thursday, 24 March 2011 19:38 (fifteen years ago)

Emacs runs interpreted code = no App store

stet, Thursday, 24 March 2011 20:53 (fifteen years ago)

hey so my dad gave me his old iphone 3g and I have no interest in getting a new phone service/dataplan (gf has an ipod touch and there are enough open connections around here that we use it as if it had a dataplan)

that being the case is there a way to get the app store? do I have to jailbreak it?

iatee, Saturday, 26 March 2011 03:30 (fifteen years ago)

I gave my gf my old 3G and she has no problem accessing the app store. I just reset the thing to factory settings and handed it over to her.

Clay, Saturday, 26 March 2011 03:38 (fifteen years ago)

yeah I think I just figured it out, just had to get rid of my dad's account info. thanks!

iatee, Saturday, 26 March 2011 03:41 (fifteen years ago)

can anyone recommend a good IM app? i've been trying IM+ and it's ok but the interface is kinda wack.. can anyone rep for beejive?

tyler 'scratch' perry (diamonddave85), Sunday, 27 March 2011 18:36 (fifteen years ago)

brotherlovesdub swears by beejive but I swear by not paying 10 dollars just to IM people. I highly recommend Meebo; I had this same dilemma when I got my iPhone and I tried a bunch and Meebo is by and far the bet IMO (also free). The only drawback is that it doesn't support group chatting, so no ilxchatz (which IM+ I believe does, but it was so hectic trying to have a chatz on your phone it's not even worth it, trust me). Also, Meebo supports like every protocol imaginable so you can have MSN and Yahoo! and Gmail chat and AIM and Facebook all up at once; so rad.

mink della reese (Stevie D(eux)), Sunday, 27 March 2011 20:21 (fifteen years ago)

nimbuzz does the job

licorice oratorio (baaderonixx), Sunday, 27 March 2011 20:52 (fifteen years ago)

Meebo by a mile; keeps you online after app has quit.

stet, Sunday, 27 March 2011 21:14 (fifteen years ago)

i guess i should clarify that i'm l@@king for an ipad im app

tyler 'scratch' perry (diamonddave85), Sunday, 27 March 2011 23:06 (fifteen years ago)

hey y'all:

i lost my iphone 3gs this weekend, and i think the fucker is gone gone gone. my contract with ATT ends at the end of this coming June.

do I:

--bite the bullet, get an iphone4, and lock myself in with ATT for another 2 years
--get a cheapie ATT burner, downgrade my plan, spend the spring/summer w/o iphoniness, and assess my options then

FUN FUN FUN FUN (gbx), Tuesday, 29 March 2011 17:52 (fifteen years ago)

the latter for sure

max, Tuesday, 29 March 2011 17:53 (fifteen years ago)

apparently iphone5 isn't coming out until fall or 2012

i'd jump to verizon if
a) coverage was an issue (i've never really had issues with dropped calls, and i always get reception in the city)
b) and if i thought i could sneakily use unlimited data + jailbroken tethering to replace my home internet connection (anyone doing this, btw? my buddy is, on a 2gb plan, and while torrenting/netflix/WoW/etc is out, web browsing and email is totally fine)

FUN FUN FUN FUN (gbx), Tuesday, 29 March 2011 17:56 (fifteen years ago)

the latter for sure

this ~seems~ right, obv, but talk me into it. on the one hand i relish returning to a pre-smartphone existence, on the other hand, my iphone is hella useful

FUN FUN FUN FUN (gbx), Tuesday, 29 March 2011 17:57 (fifteen years ago)

i'm currently using g-voice for text messaging, and skype for calls out. i'd love to set up some swagged out G-Voice thing, but am loathe to do the whole "HEY GUYS MY NUMBER CHANGED" thing.

also: ATT tells me I can keep my unlimited data plan, which makes keeping them and dropping Comcast reallllllllly tempting

FUN FUN FUN FUN (gbx), Tuesday, 29 March 2011 18:03 (fifteen years ago)

on my ipad ive accidently sent ILX new answers and various other pages to instapaper cuz my bookmarklet sits right above the Site New Answers and right under the back button

to get around this i made a new bookmark which takes up the first spot on my bookmarks bar that goes to the location "javascript:history.go(-1)" so now my fat fingers wont accidentally send more garbage to my instapaper

tyler 'scratch' perry (diamonddave85), Tuesday, 29 March 2011 20:51 (fifteen years ago)

apparently iphone5 isn't coming out until fall or 2012

― FUN FUN FUN FUN (gbx), Tuesday, 29 March 2011 18:56 Is that right?

I'd be very surprised if it was as so far it's been June every year for the new iPhone launch.

groovypanda, Wednesday, 30 March 2011 07:43 (fifteen years ago)

Gruber types are saying that's changing this year. Especially now that nobody cares about new iPods, they think they'll use the september launch for the phones now.

stet, Wednesday, 30 March 2011 07:50 (fifteen years ago)

Yeah just done some reading and they announced that WWDC will focus on the "future of IOS" this year so people seem to be assuming it'll be a software event rather than a hardware one. Although it does seem that everyone has jumped on that one little comment and concluded the iPhone 5 will be delayed.

I'd be quite happy with a delay tbh as I'm tied in to my iPhone 4 until June next year.

groovypanda, Wednesday, 30 March 2011 08:20 (fifteen years ago)

locked in to my 3g (not s) till oct this year, so a sept release would be nice. still unsure whether to replace my defunct ipod or not - if 5 has decent storage then might be worth holding off.

Did anyone get the Kraftwerk app?

$12 and all negative reviews. Hmm.

You Say Various Things (Autumn Almanac), Thursday, 7 April 2011 10:47 (fifteen years ago)

I just paid 14 bucks for this new Atari app. It's amazing for nostalgic reasons but the controllers are a pain in the ass like all iphone virtual joysticks so I'll probably never really use it.

dan selzer, Thursday, 7 April 2011 13:00 (fifteen years ago)

Chaos Rings does the joystick well. Basically anywhere on the left side of the screen you can put your finger and start the joystick from that point.

Jeff, Thursday, 7 April 2011 13:27 (fifteen years ago)

What's up w this new SkyView app and is it as good as Star Walk?

ToeJam & Lewis (Stevie D(eux)), Thursday, 7 April 2011 14:19 (fifteen years ago)

Got my first situationist thing...
