There are some settings somewhere that have to do with linkage to outside sites that share w/FB I think, that you can turn off? I forget now, but I locked down/disabled everything I could think of ages back, have hidden/blocked every app that ever appeared and so on. OH also adblock plus on firefox is yr friend. No annoying ads in sidebars for me.

yeah i'm gonna have to go back and see that my previous locking-down hasn't been pried back open a bit...

this terrifies me. i know it's an ever-encroaching reality but i mean you can end up seeing some pretty weird things in that online 360. i'm pretty sure i haven't enabled whatever thing sends likes directly to your profile, but i still keep a wide berth from those little "like" icons wherever they pop up.

I was on the FB last night, trying to track down people (didn't work, I have their addresses tho), with Amber on my right looking over.

you get more of them if you're single

I'm listed as married, and I get them.

My daughter, clearly, doesn't get them.

I uploaded some pics and facebook was able to group all the pics that contained the same person

for tagging, like it found all the pics with person A and I could just tell fb it was that person and it tagged all of them

has everyone else's friends started posting to Facebook less and less and Twitter more and more? for the people i know at least, this seems to be a really recent thing, but it's definitely happening

among people i know, there's actually been a lot of going back to facebook as twitter starts to get too...full (though nowhere near an abandonment of twitter)

facebook use def way down in my social world, mostly use it like email now. I don't think my close friends use twitter at all.

id like people to escape facebook but getting a bunch of people of varying it skillz to sign up for half a dozen websites that replicate what they already have going on facebook is kinda difficult

Twitter is good for the real time where is everyone whats happening right now type stuff - esp when you are out and different groups of people are at different things

even if i had the it skills for this (and maybe I do) I can't figure out what the benefit would be of visiting 6 different websites to replicate what one particular one does

the facebook killer is gonna have to do everything facebook does + something it can't easily add

i can see my FB dwindling to p. much invites to events and keeping in touch with family members and other people who never really got email. No need for a killer, just different services will do different parts well. There wasn't a single AOL killer that brought it down, and FB is closest to Aol.

i pretty much told my mother "so not gonna happen" when she tried.

two of my muslim friends have halal facebook pages for their families (and they had to make up a bunch of fake "friends" to make them seem plausible too) and hidden real ones

I set up my mom's facebook account on the very condition that she not ever try to friend me and to relay that message to the extended family as well. I love em, but a few days a year socializing with them is plenty for me.

my grandmother friended my mom and she got mad cause she didn't want to be fb friends with her mom. I haven't had the heart to reject my grandmother but I'm pretty sure she doesn't know how to use her account.

I decided to:

a) accept
b) not give a fuck

you can max out privacy settings to the extent that you're basically not friends

I have a page under my real name that's never been used and a page for the handle that I used a lot before I was a Green Leafy Dragon that's been used a little, but not a lot.

I already have all sorts of extended fam on my fb, but most of them is just cuzzins, and mostly cool ones at that.
