If you go, throw a rotten egg at Andy Dick.

New John Oliver standup thing on Comedy Central with Kyle Kinane and some other dudes. Kinane was pretty good.

i seriously fucking hate when ppl add visuals to stand-up bits. makes it immediately less funny

it's all in the execution imo -- Dr. Katz was good, Shorties Watchin Shorties not so much

NO BLOGS WERE INVOLVED. (some dude), Friday, 25 March 2011 12:02 (thirteen years ago) link

New John Oliver standup thing on Comedy Central with Kyle Kinane and some other dudes.

Pete Holmes and Rory Scovel were pretty great.

I kinda like Todd Glass

His Comedy Central standup from like 10 years ago was incredible. Like, nearly a perfect blend of great jokes and dry meta-humor. He mocked other comics in a Neil Hamburger type way but really was funny besides. I got his two stand up discs and they're pretty terrible. The first one has bits of that routine as well as a bunch of fake songs and bits that don't even try to be funny. On his second one he basically just loses his edge entirely and talks about some pretty awkward subjects. But I have to listen to that one again. Weird guy and I hope he finds work.

ah crap I was going to tivo the Kinane/Oliver thing..

Saw some of an old Daniel Tosh standup special on CC about 2-3 months ago and was surprised how funny I found it ("No, I don't want to smoke a bowl; I'm not 17, I have things to do. Grow up and do coke"). Didn't really catch any racist stuff there or on the clip show, but I don't see it much. He just seems to be doing for gay-seeming, fuckable blond dudes what Sarah Silverman did for JAPs.

His new stand up is pretty good but he really gets off on the wrong foot. One of his first jokes was about how illegal immigrants should be able to serve on jury duty so that criminals can truly be judged by "a jury of their peers"...I can see finding that funny, but my wife is Mexican and needless to say she really DID NOT like that at all. You really have to be on board with his persona to not get pissed at his shtick. That said, he seems to understand the way comedy works better than 90% of the comedians working today.

frogbs, Friday, 25 March 2011 21:23 (thirteen years ago) link

saw stanhope the other night and absolutely loved it. i haven't laughed so much in a long time. probably my favourite working stand-up.

^ consecutive posts about comedians I hate. Hooray!

Johnny Fever, Friday, 25 March 2011 21:50 (thirteen years ago) link

i'm watching this show on comedy central called "mash-up" & i guess the deal is that the stand up is intercut w/ visual representations of the story that the guy is telling -- i'm not exactly sure if it's a one off thing or what idk -- anyway it's hannibal burress stand up so i'm not complaining

J0rdan S., Friday, 1 April 2011 07:54 (thirteen years ago) link

this guy is so fucking funny btw

i really enjoyed norm macdonald's recent stand-up special. i'd forgotten how funny just his cadence alone is.

major fashion inspiration (reddening), Friday, 1 April 2011 09:07 (thirteen years ago) link

norm's one of those guys who was instrumental in convincing me that like 50% of being a good standup is having a funny voice.

One of his first jokes was about how illegal immigrants should be able to serve on jury duty so that criminals can truly be judged by "a jury of their peers

This earns him an "ignore forever" from me. Not that he gives a shit, but it's nice to have such clear-cut reasons to whittle down the list of things in the world one wants to pay attention to.

Had tickets to see Norm live last Friday. Got all the way to the venue only to find a note posted on the door saying that it had been rescheduled. Why didn't Ticketmaster send an email. So angry making. grrr. It's not all bad though - he's coming back in July.

Totally...I don't know of anyone else who could have pulled what he did at the Bob Saget roast. I mean even the whole "bombing on purpose" angle is really overstating it because everyone seemed to love it. "How do you not get that?" Such a classic..

well, the other comics were dying, but the actual audience was kinda like :|

that was the best part!

Norm's Saget roast was one of the funniest things I've ever seen. I think if i was there live, i would have died

Whiney G. Weingarten, Friday, 1 April 2011 13:14 (thirteen years ago) link

Agreed.

His stand-up special was pretty great as well. "Do you know how often men REALLY think about sex? Every once in a while. That's a phrase scientists don't like".

Maybe it wasn't "every once in a while" but you get the point.

dan selzer, Friday, 1 April 2011 14:37 (thirteen years ago) link

you know, when you withhold pleasure from the audience, that's more performance art than comedy (see Andy Kaufman).

We had a name circa 1990 for trying to get laughs from other comics, it was OPEN MIKE NIGHT.

Yeah, I just watched this for the first time recently and was dying precisely because of that.

gilbert gottfriend used to do a bit sort of like that, a long time ago.

"so i just flew in from fort worth and boy... was the food bad on that plane. it was TERRIBLE! then i got into my rental car it TALKED to me! what's that about? I LOVE YA NEW YORK"

40% chill and 100% negative (Tracer Hand), Friday, 1 April 2011 14:47 (thirteen years ago) link

Gilbert was one of the comics on stage who was in stitches throughout.

ok i just watched that and it is brilliant. lovitz is about to have a hernia over there.

Yeah Lovitz! GG reaction PTT mentioned good too. All of them really.

yeah it was clear that some of them didn't get it but they seemed to be laughing regardless...its not like they went dead like during the situation's thing

frogbs, Friday, 1 April 2011 15:13 (thirteen years ago) link

He was on Dan Patrick recently and completely threw Dan for a loop because everytime Norm paused in telling his story, Dan would try to do a station ID or reintroduce Norm...and Norm would whir to life again in the middle and continue telling his story. It was awesome. I like to think he was doing it on purpose...who knows.

Also Norm on twitter is pretty gold. Him, Steve Martin, and Albert Brooks...killing it

loving Joey Kola's performance on Fallon right now

sarraghmaclachlan (some dude), Saturday, 2 April 2011 05:32 (thirteen years ago) link

Joey Kola used to be on tv a lot more. That has to be the first time I've seen him in at least ten years.

Johnny Fever, Saturday, 2 April 2011 05:52 (thirteen years ago) link

want to see Moshe Kasher or Kyle Kinane if/when they roll through town...the clips I've seen and interviews have been great.
Man... I have a really hard time with Moshe kasher. I have never felt like a comedian is so edgy/dangerous/narcissistic/impossible to listen to as he. Is this how getting old feels?
He really makes me not feel good abt life. Maybe this makes him good at his job. I am fully not down tho

Postmodern Bourbon Development (Will M.), Saturday, 2 April 2011 12:06 (thirteen years ago) link

Saw Kasher on John Oliver's show, just kind of annoying.

so netflix on demand has like 240 episodes of comedy central presents...

that's a whoooooooooooooooooole lot of wacky observational humor. might need to buy a new bag of weed and have a marathon.

scott seward, Wednesday, 6 April 2011 01:15 (thirteen years ago) link

haha been watching all week - some good stuff in there!

ENBB, Wednesday, 6 April 2011 01:17 (thirteen years ago) link

i don't recognize half the names and i'll click and go "oh right that guy..."

scott seward, Wednesday, 6 April 2011 01:23 (thirteen years ago) link

having a slow motion sarah silverman program marathon right now. 2 or 3 eps a night.

scott seward, Wednesday, 6 April 2011 01:24 (thirteen years ago) link

so which one of these presents episodes is funny? cause random selection has not really been panning out.

Mordy, Wednesday, 6 April 2011 02:13 (thirteen years ago) link

you have to watch them ALL to find out.

scott seward, Wednesday, 6 April 2011 02:27 (thirteen years ago) link

Comcast on demand used to have a ton of CC Presents episodes available, then last time i looked there were only like the 5 most recent, which was a bummer. you should probably just look for specials by people who've been spoken of enthusiastically on this thread.

ℯℳℴ ❤\(◕~◕✿ (some dude), Wednesday, 6 April 2011 11:43 (thirteen years ago) link

also when in doubt go w/ a woman -- for some reason most of the best CC specials i've seen lately have been lady comics

"It’s a very odd thing with Hollywood, where you do stand-up, you’re good at it, then they go, “How would you like to be a horrible actor?” Then you say, “All right, that sounds good. I’ll do that.” So I’m fucking excited about not having to pretend to know what I’m doing with acting, because it really is nerve-racking. It really is so humiliating. If it wasn’t so pointless and ridiculous, it would be more humiliating, you know? Also, if there weren’t so many people as bad as myself—equally untalented people—it would be even more humiliating."

sounds like he and louis ck are kindred spirits in that respect. which is sad because i really liked louis ck's acting in parks and rec!

Louis CK's riffing on acting in that episode of his show with Matthew Broderick, where he plays the cop who has to tell Broderick that his grandfather's dead, and he tries all these different deliveries, including one where he shrugs his shoulders and places his palms up and asks inquisitively "I'm sorry you're grandfather's dead?" or something was one of the funniest things I've ever seen on TV.

dan selzer, Thursday, 14 April 2011 04:17 (thirteen years ago) link

Norm just seems like he is incredibly uncomfortable with fame and the expectations of it, like he's been doing a lot of radio and podcasts for the show and there's certain interviews where you just know "he fucking hates this" and so he does the non-sequitur Norm stuff to make the host as uncomfortable as he is. I like that about him. He's just a guy who is good at being funny who would rather not deal with any of the other bullshit...let him be funny, and that's it. I find him really intriguing.

Him and Louis...it's funny that they're both these old school guys who work hard at their craft, who are so loved and are finally maybe making their careers out of "Hi. I have no artifice." it's kinda cool,

VegemiteGrrl, Thursday, 14 April 2011 04:26 (thirteen years ago) link

Going to see Hannibal Buress perform at a bar on Friday. Should be interesting!

ENBB, Monday, 18 April 2011 18:24 (thirteen years ago) link

Really enjoyed Norm's hour special on Comedy Central. His first fifteen minutes is about his relative dying of cancer! Who leads with that? Haha

reggaeton for the painfully alone (polyphonic), Monday, 18 April 2011 18:27 (thirteen years ago) link

Never saw it...is it re-airing anytime soon?

Loved the first episode of Norm's new Sports Show...it already seems to be a lot better than "Sportsdome", which was kinda funny but really unlikeable

frogbs, Monday, 18 April 2011 18:32 (thirteen years ago) link

someone on youtube uploaded the whole special in four parts
