just went for my first run in months. I forgot how much fun it is! :)

I had removed my bookmark from this thread cos it was making me feel guilty... now officially rebookmarked!

Volvo Twilight (p-dog), Monday, 14 March 2011 19:29 (fifteen years ago)

been reading through the murakami book on running and it's inspired me to try run every day (except those I play football)

it's worth a read incidentally

cozen, Monday, 14 March 2011 20:22 (fifteen years ago)

Me running everyday = me ending up injured.

Jeff, Monday, 14 March 2011 20:29 (fifteen years ago)

4 miles today. picking it up again...ankles feeling sore but okay.

Ask Nult What Your Country Can Do For You (Local Garda), Saturday, 19 March 2011 15:10 (fifteen years ago)

went on my first tentative run on thu since the tendonitis issues in jan - ironically it was to actually get the pain to come back for my physio appt that day. and it didn't come back! well it kinda did but not like ACTUAL PAIN, so i think imma invest (finally) in some proper running shoes and ease back into the game - knee seems to be healing, physio knows what's up and has given me stretches to do accordingly.

it was so good to get moving again that i almost didn't mind that i could only do 2/3 of the distance i'd been used to

lex pretend, Saturday, 19 March 2011 16:45 (fifteen years ago)

14 miles today. Feeling good.

Jeff, Saturday, 19 March 2011 18:30 (fifteen years ago)

trail marathon today. took me almost 6 hours but that's okay b/c it was 88 degrees (in MARCH!), plus i ran maayyybe 30 miles total (~5/week) since my 50 miler six weeks ago. this was a "whip my ass back into shape" race basically

ilxor you've listened to one odd future album once (ilxor), Saturday, 19 March 2011 23:35 (fifteen years ago)

good job btw jeff & lex!

ilxor you've listened to one odd future album once (ilxor), Saturday, 19 March 2011 23:35 (fifteen years ago)

wow!
looking into local trails to try out tomorrow because i am bored with my closest one + the treadmill.

tehresa, Saturday, 19 March 2011 23:36 (fifteen years ago)

tehresa, have you done the C&O canal yet? can be muddy, but some nice views

well hey actually DC folx, anyone interested in a jogfap?

manic pickle dream gherk (los blue jeans), Sunday, 20 March 2011 00:54 (fifteen years ago)

i haven't!
thinking of going to riverbend park and taking the trail from there to great falls (this way you avoid paying nat'l park entrance fee). i've been to great falls before, but not to run. could be nice.

i am so bad at running with people...

tehresa, Sunday, 20 March 2011 03:34 (fifteen years ago)

so the riverbend-great falls route was pretty good, then did a little climb to the top of the ridge trail and ran back down following matildaville trail. i have no idea how far i went but i did a mix of running, climbing (not really hiking), and walking for about 2 hours so i figure i covered a reasonable distance.

i decided to wear my trail shoes (these are not trail runners, just regular trial shoes) because of the terrain. things felt really awkward at first but then i settled in ok. but today my arches are really sore. hmmmm.

tehresa, Monday, 21 March 2011 14:59 (fifteen years ago)

but today my arches are really sore. hmmmm.

gotta avoid those roots! two days after my trail marathon & the sorest part of my whole body is the arch of my left foot. stepped on a few thick roots mid-foot going downhill... yeouch!

ilxor you've listened to one odd future album once (ilxor), Monday, 21 March 2011 15:01 (fifteen years ago)

the thing i hate most about trails around here is those stupid saucer-sized rocks. they are just big enough to be really annoying/shifty when you run/walk over them (i've encountered this problem hiking, too).

tehresa, Monday, 21 March 2011 15:09 (fifteen years ago)

I need a convenient trail.

Jeff, Monday, 21 March 2011 17:24 (fifteen years ago)

I'm actually going to need to do a 6 mile run in DC on 3/31, maybe I can find a trail? It's going to have to be a 6:00 am start time though.

Jeff, Monday, 21 March 2011 17:30 (fifteen years ago)

I'll probably just have to stick with city running. I don't need to be twisting my ankle a month and a half before my marathon.

Jeff, Monday, 21 March 2011 17:37 (fifteen years ago)

where will you be staying?

tehresa, Monday, 21 March 2011 17:55 (fifteen years ago)

Hilton Capital
1001 16TH ST NW

Jeff, Monday, 21 March 2011 18:15 (fifteen years ago)

ok yeah, hard to find trails near there! maybe go for a run down the mall & around the monuments/tidal basin? if you feel like being adventurous, you could run down to memorial bridge and over to the mt. vernon trail (represent!) or into arlington cemetery.

tehresa, Monday, 21 March 2011 18:33 (fifteen years ago)

What about teddy roosevelt island? Looks like I can get there.

Jeff, Monday, 21 March 2011 18:55 (fifteen years ago)

yeah def. i've never been over there but i *think* you could even take mt. vernon trail to get there.

tehresa, Monday, 21 March 2011 18:58 (fifteen years ago)

Going to try something wacky on Saturday, pacing a pal in a 50k. Well, for one 10 mile loop of it. Got to hold 9 min/miles. Then I'll continue on and run 6 by myself.

Jeff, Tuesday, 22 March 2011 12:50 (fifteen years ago)

still can't quite get fit, my ankle has got stiffer and sorer after running 4 miles on sat. i'm starting to think physio is mandatory if i want to keep running. or else i should just accept pain...

LocalGarda, Tuesday, 22 March 2011 13:17 (fifteen years ago)

if it's still an issue you should def see a physio

lex pretend, Tuesday, 22 March 2011 13:23 (fifteen years ago)

How long did you take off before the 4?

Jeff, Tuesday, 22 March 2011 13:42 (fifteen years ago)

i did 2 miles 7 days before, and had about 4/5 weeks off before that. part of me thinks if i am sensible i can just build up the muscles. but there must be exercises i can do to help this, before and after. i don't think i've fucked any one thing, i reckon it's just something in my gait.

LocalGarda, Tuesday, 22 March 2011 13:45 (fifteen years ago)

Jell, that sounds awesome-- pacing is the job of unsung heroes

ilxor you've listened to one odd future album once (ilxor), Tuesday, 22 March 2011 13:51 (fifteen years ago)

so how does being a pacer work? is it just a question of having developed an awesome sense of timing, or is there some kind of technical assistance involved?

the girl from spirea x (f. hazel), Tuesday, 22 March 2011 14:41 (fifteen years ago)

you just run w/ someone and motivate them to keep going. i've actually never heard of using a pacer in a 50k (as jeff cites)-- it's more typical for, say, the last 30-40 miles of a 100 miler.

ilxor you've listened to one odd future album once (ilxor), Tuesday, 22 March 2011 14:43 (fifteen years ago)

hey guys!
it's so good to be getting outside again. i spent the winter on the treadmill, it helped though cuz i'm running strong atm

Aerosol, Tuesday, 22 March 2011 14:46 (fifteen years ago)

Yeah, it's mainly for support. Makes the miles pass quicker.

Jeff, Tuesday, 22 March 2011 15:27 (fifteen years ago)

hey can anyone figure out the exact URL for this img (LINK) or send me a downloaded .jpg or something? i can usually dig thru the Page Source and figure it out, but this one's giving me trouble. not really into paying $15 for a low-res image to throw on faceb00k or whatever

(photo from saturday's trail marathon btw!)

ilxor you've listened to one odd future album once (ilxor), Tuesday, 22 March 2011 17:29 (fifteen years ago)

hahaha thanks. i guess judging by the border you took a screen shot & cropped? i shoulda done that...

ilxor you've listened to one odd future album once (ilxor), Tuesday, 22 March 2011 17:38 (fifteen years ago)

Yes. I'm helping.

Jeff, Tuesday, 22 March 2011 18:00 (fifteen years ago)

front of my ankle, btwn foot and lower calf, goes numb and dead early into each run lately, stiff and hurts like hell after. Anyone got any tips?

the '' key on my keybord is not working (darraghmac), Tuesday, 22 March 2011 19:14 (fifteen years ago)

been running 8+ every other day lately. this week i am going to buy some gels and make a push to break 13 for the first time. very excited.

jeff, Wednesday, 23 March 2011 08:52 (fifteen years ago)

5 miles last night in 40:05. Actually the fastest 5 miles I've run. If I had been racing an 8k it would have been a PR by about a minute and a half. Don't know where that came from.

Jeff, Wednesday, 23 March 2011 12:52 (fifteen years ago)

nice job all!

i shuffled thru 3 miles last night in 32 min or so, first run since marathon saturday. also planned out a hefty running schedule for the next 7-8 months or so: 1,500+ miles, five races (one tune-up, then four ultramarathons). schedule starts NOW

ilxor you've listened to one odd future album once (ilxor), Wednesday, 23 March 2011 13:44 (fifteen years ago)

How far are the ultras?

Jeff, Wednesday, 23 March 2011 14:08 (fifteen years ago)

60k, 60k, 60k, then either 50k or 50mi depending how burned out (or not) i am

ilxor you've listened to one odd future album once (ilxor), Wednesday, 23 March 2011 14:15 (fifteen years ago)

that's 37.2 miles before you go running to your calculator btw

ilxor you've listened to one odd future album once (ilxor), Wednesday, 23 March 2011 14:15 (fifteen years ago)

Thanks for the math help, bro.

I'm progressing nicely so I'm starting to think about a 50k. Not going to make any decisions till after the marathon though. I had a dream last night that I ran sub 4. It was a good dream.

Jeff, Wednesday, 23 March 2011 15:48 (fifteen years ago)

there ya go!

i was on track for sub-5 at my trail marathon until about 1/2 way through when i realized: A) i had not run further than 7-8 miles on any run in the last 6 weeks, B) i had run an average of mayyyybe 5-10 miles a week in those 6 weeks, C) the result was that i was grossly underprepared, D) this was not a flat road marathon but a fairly hilly, rooty 6.5-mile trail loop twisting thru the woods, E) it was fucking 88 degrees in MARCH in texas and felt like summer and i had not done ANY training in the heat... so ended up being in the 5:xx:xx range like pretty much all my marathons :(

ilxor you've listened to one odd future album once (ilxor), Wednesday, 23 March 2011 15:53 (fifteen years ago)

oh and F) running the first half of the race at sub-5 pace meant i was about to crash and burn really badly and not be able to keep up the pace in the heat

ilxor you've listened to one odd future album once (ilxor), Wednesday, 23 March 2011 15:54 (fifteen years ago)

88 degrees is tough.

Jeff, Wednesday, 23 March 2011 16:04 (fifteen years ago)

i'd love to blame it 100% on the weather/heat but i was way underprepared :D

ilxor you've listened to one odd future album once (ilxor), Wednesday, 23 March 2011 16:10 (fifteen years ago)

Under prepared AND heat are tough. That was basically my marathon in a nutshell.
