Slow lorax loves getting tickled (dayo), Wednesday, 9 March 2011 23:12 (fifteen years ago)

What does "b/n" mean? Sorry, I'm probably being thick.

Alba, Wednesday, 9 March 2011 23:20 (fifteen years ago)

Ah, got you.

Alba, Wednesday, 9 March 2011 23:30 (fifteen years ago)

you guys are unlimited data y/n

Yes. Grandfathered in with my original iPhone 1.0 plan

Stockhausen's Ekranoplan Quartet (Elvis Telecom), Thursday, 10 March 2011 01:17 (fifteen years ago)

I got grandfathered in a year ago November. I think they cut unlimited data plans shortly after. Really hoping I can keep it and get a new iPhone later this year.

mh, Thursday, 10 March 2011 02:21 (fifteen years ago)

so basically this new ipad 2 has 512 mb ram \(^_^)/

Head goes goes goes (Schlafsack), Thursday, 10 March 2011 03:02 (fifteen years ago)

Keep forgetting that there's another reason to get the 3G-enabled iPad - the wifi-only one doesn't have GPS. I know location-based services can do a reasonable job with base station triangulation in urban areas, but still.

Alba, Thursday, 10 March 2011 11:09 (fifteen years ago)

the only GPS service is use is the maps, i disallow it on everything else.

The GPS abilities these apps have now is scary, as I've seen on my iPod touch - I guess Google is using the IP or something

Nhex, Thursday, 10 March 2011 12:36 (fifteen years ago)

You mean the non-GPS abilities? Touches and non-3G iPads use triangulation from known wifi hotspots in place of GPS.

Alba, Thursday, 10 March 2011 12:41 (fifteen years ago)

It's not just the Touch stuff, I've seen other websites use the same Google maps triangulation too from my home computer

Nhex, Thursday, 10 March 2011 12:43 (fifteen years ago)

Has the location security settings moved to a more prominent place in 4.3 or am I just imagining it. I'm glad I did because now the Angry Birds won't know where I've hidden their eggs. (serious wtf does angry birds need to know my location for?)

American Fear of Pranksterism (Ed), Thursday, 10 March 2011 13:23 (fifteen years ago)

I let all apps know my location. It's wonderful and magical.

It did move though, yeah. Full breakdown here (ilounge does these really well, always worth checking in with them when there's a new firmware): http://www.ilounge.com/index.php/articles/comments/instant-expert-secrets-features-of-ios-4.3/

JimD, Thursday, 10 March 2011 15:15 (fifteen years ago)

is there any news about uk ipad pricing? or when that will be announced?

caek, Thursday, 10 March 2011 23:02 (fifteen years ago)

International prices are unknown atm. Given your weak pound they'll probably be more expensive than the last ones.

i just got my hands on a mid 2007 aluminum body imac. its got 1gb RAM and i want to upgrade; is the difference between 4GB (which would mean buying 2x2GB) and 3GB (which would mean buying a single 2GB to slot next to the current 1GB) significant enough to be worth the extra $40?

max, Friday, 11 March 2011 15:52 (fifteen years ago)

I think more ram is always worth it and I wouldn't work with less than 4 these days.

dan selzer, Friday, 11 March 2011 16:01 (fifteen years ago)

my old sysadmin's advice still holds, i think - "RAM is like money, you can't have too much"

40% chill and 100% negative (Tracer Hand), Friday, 11 March 2011 16:12 (fifteen years ago)

well... you can, but the system disparity has to be so great that you wouldn't even consider getting to that point in the first place (like say, a Pentium III with 64GB of RAM)

ancient, but very sexy (DJP), Friday, 11 March 2011 16:16 (fifteen years ago)

how would you even fit 64 GB of RAM onto a PIII motherboard, DJP

dayo, Saturday, 12 March 2011 00:22 (fifteen years ago)

that's what SHE said

40% chill and 100% negative (Tracer Hand), Saturday, 12 March 2011 00:27 (fifteen years ago)

I have a 24' late 2007 iMac myself, and I got the 4GB upgrade when I purchased it. Unless you're going to junk it in a year or so, I'd say it's worth the extra $15-30 for that 1GB - look around, you can find ~$60 for 2x2GB PC2-5300 SODIMMs, look for laptop memory. I often hit the 4GB ceiling now (though I'm often running 10 apps at once), so I'd say it's worth it.

Euler, Saturday, 12 March 2011 14:01 (fifteen years ago)

Dear Lord I must put GarageBand down now and eat something.

quick question wrt the new HDMI out - will you be able to output the sky sports feed via the iOS sky sports app to a telly?

cozen, Tuesday, 15 March 2011 12:54 (fifteen years ago)

and is there any way to watch atdhe/myp2p feeds ON IPAD

cozen, Tuesday, 15 March 2011 12:56 (fifteen years ago)

why didnt anyone tell me the interface for ipad reeder was boring as fuck before i dropped 5 big ones on it?

throwing darts and eating pizza behind impenetrable walls (diamonddave85), Tuesday, 15 March 2011 16:29 (fifteen years ago)

Boring but effective.

Jeff, Tuesday, 15 March 2011 16:33 (fifteen years ago)

say what? Reeder has justified buying an ipad singlehandedly. Can't fucking wait for the mac app store version to come out - so fed up with netnews reader

licorice oratorio (baaderonixx), Tuesday, 15 March 2011 16:52 (fifteen years ago)

this is boring http://smokingapples.com/wp-content/uploads/2010/05/reeder-ipad.jpg

throwing darts and eating pizza behind impenetrable walls (diamonddave85), Tuesday, 15 March 2011 16:54 (fifteen years ago)

when you finally drill into yr feeds it's great, but this main screen is just awful

throwing darts and eating pizza behind impenetrable walls (diamonddave85), Tuesday, 15 March 2011 16:54 (fifteen years ago)

baaderonixx the Mac beta is now stable enough to use every day. Still can't manage feeds though :(

stet, Tuesday, 15 March 2011 17:01 (fifteen years ago)

I stopped using Mac beta Reeder, but love it on my iPhone. Find I use google reader on mac out of habit, and was annoyed by not being able to manage feeds, and constantly being asked to redownload it.

dan selzer, Tuesday, 15 March 2011 17:39 (fifteen years ago)

bbbbut PS3.... has no games
xps

cozen, Tuesday, 15 March 2011 18:33 (fifteen years ago)

I agree the main screen is boring, but I don't have any immediate suggestions how they could make it as useful as the iPhone version's opening without another similar screen-wasting thing.

I'm really getting into using Flipboard more, lately.

mh, Tuesday, 15 March 2011 19:30 (fifteen years ago)

they could make the main screen highlights from yr favorite feeds, like the opening screen for google reader

just woke up (lukas), Tuesday, 15 March 2011 19:33 (fifteen years ago)

Reeder is great and not boring, although afaict there's no way to reorder your feeds alphabetically. The Mac version keeps crashing (yes even on the newest beta).

Emperor Tomato Catsuuuuuuuup (Autumn Almanac), Tuesday, 15 March 2011 19:41 (fifteen years ago)

i would like at least an OPTION to show a list of my subscribed feeds
