It was just because they didn't want to get murdered by a particularly big episodes of American Idol in the ratings.

Danny Pudi is on the latest Nerdist podcast

Crazed Mister Handy (kingfish), Tuesday, 8 March 2011 17:40 (fifteen years ago)

and Starburns (Dino Stamatapolous) is on WTF. he doesn't talk about Community much but he does talk about everyone hating Chevy Chase. He says he likes Chase, but thinks Chase needs people to respect him before he can be friendly with them, and the cast is so young that they don't really have much respect for him so it sounds like there's definitely friction. But Stamatapolous also says that Chase is a total dick, and tells a story about him trashing a sketch he worked really hard on for the Conan show.

congratulations (n/a), Tuesday, 8 March 2011 19:39 (fifteen years ago)

also describes Chase as somewhat old and confused

congratulations (n/a), Tuesday, 8 March 2011 19:39 (fifteen years ago)

so no real surprises there

congratulations (n/a), Tuesday, 8 March 2011 19:39 (fifteen years ago)

i don't love this show, too many hugs and feelings in it, which is not what i'm looking for in a comedy show. otoh it does bring some pretty decent lols and alison brie is really hot, which i'd never noticed watching mad men.

À la recherche du temps Pardew (jim in glasgow), Tuesday, 8 March 2011 20:16 (fifteen years ago)

thought you were talking about WTF until the bit about Brie

rockapads, Tuesday, 8 March 2011 20:52 (fifteen years ago)

don't understand why anyone would think Community has an offensive amount of feewings compared to any other sitcom. if anything its emotional moments are done with more ironic distance and/or imbedded jokes than most other shows.

some dude, Tuesday, 8 March 2011 21:28 (fifteen years ago)

i don't watch much tv.

À la recherche du temps Pardew (jim in glasgow), Tuesday, 8 March 2011 21:29 (fifteen years ago)

maybe it's just code for "I hate Britta and Shirley"?

goth barbershop quartet (DJP), Tuesday, 8 March 2011 21:29 (fifteen years ago)

and my favourite current show is it's always sunny and favourite of all time is seinfeld so you can see where i'm coming from.

À la recherche du temps Pardew (jim in glasgow), Tuesday, 8 March 2011 21:30 (fifteen years ago)

i feel like they spread the emo stuff around fairly evenly.

À la recherche du temps Pardew (jim in glasgow), Tuesday, 8 March 2011 21:32 (fifteen years ago)

yeah if those 2 shows are your control i can see how you're approaching the variable

some dude, Tuesday, 8 March 2011 21:34 (fifteen years ago)

tbf community laid on the feewings stuff relatively thick in the first season

ullr saves (gbx), Tuesday, 8 March 2011 21:46 (fifteen years ago)

i totally agree that community has feelings. one of the things i love about the show, but i can understand how someone with absolutely no tolerance for sentiment in sitcoms might be turned off

Mordy, Tuesday, 8 March 2011 22:38 (fifteen years ago)

sitcom sentiment generally doesn't work for me at all because of the way that it's quite often so arch and the "lesson" or whatever is compacted into a very predictable arc over 20 odd minutes and the resolution at the end is accompanied with an artless song fading in and a realisation etc.

À la recherche du temps Pardew (jim in glasgow), Wednesday, 9 March 2011 00:10 (fifteen years ago)

i get to love a sitcom character because i consistently find the lines they come out with, their foibles, and the performance of the actor doing the character charming and or compelling. not because they have a will they or won't they romance or have to overcome a prejudice or whatever.

À la recherche du temps Pardew (jim in glasgow), Wednesday, 9 March 2011 00:11 (fifteen years ago)

and i shouldn't really be shitting up this thread with this, ha.

i dunno i feel like Community parodied that kind of thing much more than they indulged in it particularly in the first season. which might rub you the wrong way too, but i dunno, seems like a big difference.

JaySeanLilWayne (some dude), Wednesday, 9 March 2011 00:15 (fifteen years ago)

Other people have made that claim on this board too... I never saw that much parody in it tbh.

Didn't Community get children chanting I LOVE DRUGS or something?

one of the dominant themes of the show is having Abed know (or imagine or whatever) that they're in a TV show and point out sitcom tropes, undercut sexual tension between Jeff & Britta by comparing them to Sam & Diane, etc. it's been less overt this season but still a lot of deliberate building up expectations for emotional payoff and then cutting them off with a joke (Jeff walking in the rain to what you think will be Annie's apartment, etc.). not saying this is the best part of the show or that it completely overshadows the sentimental moments the show does indulge in, but i don't know how you could miss it.

JaySeanLilWayne (some dude), Wednesday, 9 March 2011 19:43 (fifteen years ago)

Oh, I do see what you're saying there. I guess I just always found many of the storylines and conclusions relatively sentimental and heavy on the-power-of-friendship anyway (esp compared to e.g. the shows jim mentions).

EveningStar (Sund4r), Wednesday, 9 March 2011 20:03 (fifteen years ago)

i think a lot of that is them just working overtime to establish a bond or rapport between the characters that goes beyond them being in a study group, compared to most shows about families or co-workers or whatever where there's not chance of the viewer going "wait why are they hanging out all the time? don't they have social lives?"

JaySeanLilWayne (some dude), Wednesday, 9 March 2011 20:05 (fifteen years ago)

The overarching narrative of the show is about a heartless corporate lawyer learning how to reconnect with people, so the power-of-friendship angle isn't that unsurprising IMO; what I appreciate is the off-kilter, unpredictable way in which they are making that journey AND how Jeff is still retaining an essential core of self-involved narcissism that makes his connections with the other characters more believable.

Sentiment doesn't bother me if it's earned.

reggaeton for the painfully alone (polyphonic), Wednesday, 9 March 2011 20:09 (fifteen years ago)

I didn't say it bothered me, just that it seems pretty central and evident, even compared to other TV comedies, and I can understand how that puts some people off. It's my favourite show on TV fwiw.

EveningStar (Sund4r), Wednesday, 9 March 2011 20:20 (fifteen years ago)

Ditto! <3 Community!

Mordy, Wednesday, 9 March 2011 20:37 (fifteen years ago)

Also cannot wait for inevitable Western ep, esp since the Western idiom is so much about community formation.

Per Variety: NBC renews OFFICE, COMMUNITY, PARKS & REC.

reggaeton for the painfully alone (polyphonic), Thursday, 17 March 2011 19:56 (fifteen years ago)

YES! Considering 30 was already picked up, that means at least one more year of fun (and potentially one year of the most awkward Office episodes ever).

Johnny Fever, Thursday, 17 March 2011 19:57 (fifteen years ago)

Fuck yeah!

Mordy, Thursday, 17 March 2011 19:58 (fifteen years ago)

xp You don't think Chang would win in a walk?

Johnny Fever, Thursday, 17 March 2011 20:15 (fifteen years ago)

he's more of a secondary character, isn't he? tertiary would be more like Leonard and Magnitude

some dude, Thursday, 17 March 2011 20:18 (fifteen years ago)

he's more of a secondary character, isn't he?

yeah thats why i want to do a tertiary character poll - like ppl that have been in multiple episodes but not ft'd roles

nu rave electro banger coked out art school college party (Lamp), Thursday, 17 March 2011 20:20 (fifteen years ago)

Dan Harmon has been talking to people on Twitter about Bioware RPGs for the last two hours and took a break to announce this.

Crazed Mister Handy (kingfish), Thursday, 17 March 2011 20:20 (fifteen years ago)

Star Burns, the dean...is the dean secondary though? Because he'd trounce Lenny and 'tude.

Tarfumes The Escape Goat, Thursday, 17 March 2011 20:20 (fifteen years ago)

In that case, I vote for the cute girl who was hanging around with Annie while Britta was mistaking that other girl for a lesbian.

Johnny Fever, Thursday, 17 March 2011 20:20 (fifteen years ago)

there's also abed's roomie whatshisname
