also yeah, v impressed by the new cover design. I wasn't looking forward to toting an ipad in a case that was bigger than the ipad so this is packed with win.

Fannypack's "Camel Toe" (Autumn Almanac), Wednesday, 2 March 2011 19:35 (fifteen years ago)

Interesting also that the old ipad is now a clearance item on the US site (i.e. not in the current products section).

Fannypack's "Camel Toe" (Autumn Almanac), Wednesday, 2 March 2011 19:38 (fifteen years ago)

fucking figures as i just bought the original a month ago.

OLD MAN YELLS AT SHOUT RAP (chrisv2010), Wednesday, 2 March 2011 19:58 (fifteen years ago)

Sorry but I really have to ask these two questions:

1. You didn't know?
2. How didn't you know?

Fannypack's "Camel Toe" (Autumn Almanac), Wednesday, 2 March 2011 20:06 (fifteen years ago)

Also you're not missing much, the new ipad is not the jump the iphone 4 was.

Fannypack's "Camel Toe" (Autumn Almanac), Wednesday, 2 March 2011 20:09 (fifteen years ago)

dual core processor? come on, thats huge

hand solo (diamonddave85), Wednesday, 2 March 2011 20:13 (fifteen years ago)

FM radio?

Tony Abbott : shit happening (SeekAltRoute), Wednesday, 2 March 2011 20:17 (fifteen years ago)

Nothing I'm doing is that processor-limited, so... I guess if I buy GarageBand it could change.

mh, Wednesday, 2 March 2011 20:17 (fifteen years ago)

It's huge if you're doing dual-core stuff with it (and potentially huge if iOS 5 takes advantage of dual-core for proper multitasking). If you're just writing emails and watching videos, meh xxxp

Fannypack's "Camel Toe" (Autumn Almanac), Wednesday, 2 March 2011 20:18 (fifteen years ago)

camera and video out are a (not unexpected) big deal imo

caek, Wednesday, 2 March 2011 20:19 (fifteen years ago)

Again, depends on what you're doing with it. I think we all knew this new ipad would have a camera, even the day the first one was announced.

Fannypack's "Camel Toe" (Autumn Almanac), Wednesday, 2 March 2011 20:20 (fifteen years ago)

yeah prob bigger a deal for people who want to use the ipad as their sole computer. I mostly use it for Reeder and Instapaper - the rest I do on my MBP

licorice oratorio (baaderonixx), Wednesday, 2 March 2011 20:43 (fifteen years ago)

(aa here) I'll use it mainly (as per upthread) for language study, but there's a load of asual stuff I can do with it as well. Doubt very much I'll bother with the 3G, even if I don't get wireless hotspot on my iphone.

Head goes goes goes (Schlafsack), Wednesday, 2 March 2011 20:47 (fifteen years ago)

Good Techcrunch run-down: http://www.crunchgear.com/2011/03/02/hands-on-with-the-ipad-2/

Head goes goes goes (Schlafsack), Wednesday, 2 March 2011 20:49 (fifteen years ago)

well you can use garageband with ipad 1 so who cares. yeah i use it primarily as an ereader, so not that big of a deal for me.

OLD MAN YELLS AT SHOUT RAP (chrisv2010), Wednesday, 2 March 2011 20:50 (fifteen years ago)

dis is cool

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=RrRubE28fH0

ice cr?m, Wednesday, 2 March 2011 20:56 (fifteen years ago)

yeah for ereading you're better off waiting for a high-res screen in the next one.

Head goes goes goes (Schlafsack), Wednesday, 2 March 2011 21:07 (fifteen years ago)

yeah and as far as a camera goes im not going to be whipping out my ipad and taking pictures.

OLD MAN YELLS AT SHOUT RAP (chrisv2010), Wednesday, 2 March 2011 21:13 (fifteen years ago)

^^^what steve jobs says to the ladies.

OLD MAN YELLS AT SHOUT RAP (chrisv2010), Wednesday, 2 March 2011 21:13 (fifteen years ago)

I never understood the point of having a camera in an ipad. Apart from OCR (which I will use tbh) and the odd emergency snap, it's not exactly a convenient shape for that sort of thing.

Head goes goes goes (Schlafsack), Wednesday, 2 March 2011 21:30 (fifteen years ago)

its really so people can do nude face time.

OLD MAN YELLS AT SHOUT RAP (chrisv2010), Wednesday, 2 March 2011 21:32 (fifteen years ago)

padroutlette

Head goes goes goes (Schlafsack), Wednesday, 2 March 2011 21:42 (fifteen years ago)

orrite, because this is a massive fanboy thread I am going to allow myself to be giddy for a minute. I am ordering one of these mofos (black, green case) the second pre-orders appear, and I will <3 it and caress it and probably push it up my bum. Apart from screen res (pie in the sky tbh) and weight this thing basically meets/exceeds my expectations in every way. Bit worried that we've not heard about the RAM (256 Mb is ridic) but I don't think Apple ever announces iphone/ipad memory so it could still be 512.

Head goes goes goes (Schlafsack), Wednesday, 2 March 2011 22:00 (fifteen years ago)

It'll probably need to be 512 to run iMovie. I've just sold my iPad and will be using £->$ currency to get the iPad 2 for about $50 or so over what I got for it, so quite happy there!

carson dial, Wednesday, 2 March 2011 22:35 (fifteen years ago)

Damn good point. iDevices all seem to increase in ram every year (iphones went 128->256->512 over three contiguous releases) so it makes sense that the new ipad will be 512 for that reason too. I'm just worried that all this price-chasing has rendered ram a casualty.

Head goes goes goes (Schlafsack), Wednesday, 2 March 2011 22:42 (fifteen years ago)

seriously considering getting a first-gen ipad now. price has been cut to €379 from (I think) €499 on apple.com/ie.

been thinking about getting one for a while now... I would love to have some touch-sensitive flying faders for music production and decent ones are so damn expensive (e.g. €885 for the Euphonix MC Mix on Thomann) that the ipad seems like kind of a great deal by comparison.

anyone used an ipad like this? would love to hear how effective it is.

Volvo Twilight (p-dog), Wednesday, 2 March 2011 23:31 (fifteen years ago)

tempted by ipad 1 now

Romford Spring (DG), Thursday, 3 March 2011 00:40 (fifteen years ago)

256MB RAM? Is that all?

Tony Abbott : shit happening (SeekAltRoute), Thursday, 3 March 2011 02:49 (fifteen years ago)

That's all the current one has got. The iphone 4 has 512. I know.

Head goes goes goes (Schlafsack), Thursday, 3 March 2011 02:51 (fifteen years ago)

obv old news, but WSJ did a decent write-up that prolly validates most rumors
http://online.wsj.com/article/SB10001424052748703559604576176052060365770.html?mod=WSJ_hp_LEFTTopStories

also of note, it apparently has been written tomorrow.

kelpolaris, Thursday, 3 March 2011 02:59 (fifteen years ago)

does this have flush headphone jack

el tuomboto (cozen), Thursday, 3 March 2011 07:32 (fifteen years ago)

Still not convinced by the iPad and won't be buying one just yet. iPhone 4 is great for my travel needs and I still prefer a laptop.

I'll probably cave in by iPad5.

Bob Six, Thursday, 3 March 2011 14:01 (fifteen years ago)

Generally what happens among people I know is they say they have no idea what they'd use an iPad for, they use one for a half hour, and suddenly they buy one and mysteriously have a use for it.

mh, Thursday, 3 March 2011 14:50 (fifteen years ago)

When it first came out everyone I knew who got one used it for about a month then relegated it to watching-movies-in-bed status. Probably more an early adopter curse than anything else.

Fannypack's "Camel Toe" (Autumn Almanac), Thursday, 3 March 2011 19:52 (fifteen years ago)

Kind of funny I posted that today. I transferred some music to my iPad that I didn't move anywhere else so I'm using it as an oversized iPod right now

mh, Thursday, 3 March 2011 19:54 (fifteen years ago)

watching movies/reading books/surfing the web in bed/on plane is prob 95% of ipad usage atm - im sure thatll change as the platform matures/industry shifts tho

ice cr?m, Thursday, 3 March 2011 19:57 (fifteen years ago)

The iPad would be more useful if I spent a lot of time on the subway/bus, or if I could justify the 3G subscription cost. But my iPhone will do 85% of the iPad's tasks (directions, Safari, time-wasting games) and for most tasks the iPhone can't do I'd rather have a real keyboard, etc..

boots get knocked from here to czechoslovakier (milo z), Thursday, 3 March 2011 19:59 (fifteen years ago)

It makes it kind of outsized, but I got the iPad case from incase that is a carrier for an iPad, the Apple bluetooth keyboard, charger, etc. and it comes with a pretty nice little stand. I've used it as an easy laptop replacement, and I have the camera connection kit so it's pretty sweet to use for a quick photo review session

mh, Thursday, 3 March 2011 20:02 (fifteen years ago)

so i am having the hardest time deciding between the 3G and wifi. I commute by subway (underground, so neither service would work then) in NYC... so I'm sure I could find WiFi spots around if I got that option, but I'm not sure how convient it is.
anyone with an ipad have issues with just the wifi? wish they got 3G? vice versa? etc etc?
what about you guys getting the ipad 2 - wifi or 3G?

juicebox, Thursday, 3 March 2011 21:44 (fifteen years ago)

I think wifi + boingo is a pretty decent option.

American Fear of Pranksterism (Ed), Thursday, 3 March 2011 21:58 (fifteen years ago)

I gave a 3G and used the 3G all the time when I had a commute. Now I have no commute and I never use the 3G.

Alba, Thursday, 3 March 2011 21:58 (fifteen years ago)

Gave = have = evidence I have an iPad

Alba, Thursday, 3 March 2011 21:59 (fifteen years ago)

I'll prob just get wifi. If I want 3G on it, I'll just upgrade my phone plan for the hotspot/tethering feature.

Jeff, Thursday, 3 March 2011 22:00 (fifteen years ago)

If you have a phone that will act as a wi-fi hotspot (e.g. the iphone 4 in a few days, if you're in the US and on AT&T) you could probably manage with a wi-fi ipad, although you wouldn't get GPS.

argh xp

Head goes goes goes (Schlafsack), Thursday, 3 March 2011 22:01 (fifteen years ago)

what is boingo? link?
also, the hotspot was a decent option i was considering. I have an android phone until i can upgrade in december to IPHONE5OMG, but i just was curious if people used 3g all the time. wifi seems to make more (economical) sense

juicebox, Thursday, 3 March 2011 22:04 (fifteen years ago)

boingo is a 10 bucks a month pass to a pretty wide spectrum of hotspots worldwide. (goboingo.com I think)

American Fear of Pranksterism (Ed), Thursday, 3 March 2011 22:06 (fifteen years ago)

nice, I'll check that out. Thanks!

juicebox, Thursday, 3 March 2011 22:07 (fifteen years ago)

boingo is the devil

ice cr?m, Thursday, 3 March 2011 22:14 (fifteen years ago)

Just had a look at an Apple video showing people using this thing. It really does look quite spectacularly thin. If loads of these things snap in half on day one I will lol.

Head goes goes goes (Schlafsack), Thursday, 3 March 2011 22:14 (fifteen years ago)

bunga bunga
