people are speculating that the "western-themed" end of school picnic mentioned in the news crawl might be the real setting for the finale.

i can't believe no-one has mentioned the real world tape.

getting lost guy goes with "air vent monster" on the ticker, so a lost parody is my guess for the finale.

Using Josh whatshisface in an actual LOST parody/nod is a little too on the nose for Community imo. They might hint at it (like they did with the Cosby sweater to Malcolm Jamal Warner), but I don't think they'd base a major plot point around it.

That ticker is the nifty infodump for the second half of the season, just like Abed's Robocop POV was in the first half.

Danny Pudi is on the latest Nerdist podcast

and Starburns (Dino Stamatapolous) is on WTF. he doesn't talk about Community much but he does talk about everyone hating Chevy Chase. He says he likes Chase, but thinks Chase needs people to respect him before he can be friendly with them, and the cast is so young that they don't really have much respect for him so it sounds like there's definitely friction. But Stamatapolous also says that Chase is a total dick, and tells a story about him trashing a sketch he worked really hard on for the Conan show.

also describes Chase as somewhat old and confused

so no real surprises there

i don't love this show, too many hugs and feelings in it, which is not what i'm looking for in a comedy show. otoh it does bring some pretty decent lols and alison brie is really hot, which i'd never noticed watching mad men.

don't understand why anyone would think Community has an offensive amount of feewings compared to any other sitcom. if anything its emotional moments are done with more ironic distance and/or imbedded jokes than most other shows.

i don't watch much tv.

and my favourite current show is it's always sunny and favourite of all time is seinfeld so you can see where i'm coming from.

i feel like they spread the emo stuff around fairly evenly.

i totally agree that community has feelings. one of the things i love about the show, but i can understand how someone with absolutely no tolerance for sentiment in sitcoms might be turned off

sitcom sentiment generally doesn't work for me at all because of the way that it's quite often so arch and the "lesson" or whatever is compacted into a very predictable arc over 20 odd minutes and the resolution at the end is accompanied with an artless song fading in and a realisation etc.

i get to love a sitcom character because i consistently find the lines they come out with, their foibles, and the performance of the actor doing the character charming and or compelling. not because they have a will they or won't they romance or have to overcome a prejudice or whatever.

and i shouldn't really be shitting up this thread with this, ha.

one of the dominant themes of the show is having Abed know (or imagine or whatever) that they're in a TV show and point out sitcom tropes, undercut sexual tension between Jeff & Britta by comparing them to Sam & Diane, etc. it's been less overt this season but still a lot of deliberate building up expectations for emotional payoff and then cutting them off with a joke (Jeff walking in the rain to what you think will be Annie's apartment, etc.). not saying this is the best part of the show or that it completely overshadows the sentimental moments the show does indulge in, but i don't know how you could miss it.

Oh, I do see what you're saying there. I guess I just always found many of the storylines and conclusions relatively sentimental and heavy on the-power-of-friendship anyway (esp compared to e.g. the shows jim mentions).

i think a lot of that is them just working overtime to establish a bond or rapport between the characters that goes beyond them being in a study group, compared to most shows about families or co-workers or whatever where there's not chance of the viewer going "wait why are they hanging out all the time? don't they have social lives?"

The overarching narrative of the show is about a heartless corporate lawyer learning how to reconnect with people, so the power-of-friendship angle isn't that unsurprising IMO; what I appreciate is the off-kilter, unpredictable way in which they are making that journey AND how Jeff is still retaining an essential core of self-involved narcissism that makes his connections with the other characters more believable.

Sentiment doesn't bother me if it's earned.

I didn't say it bothered me, just that it seems pretty central and evident, even compared to other TV comedies, and I can understand how that puts some people off. It's my favourite show on TV fwiw.

Also cannot wait for inevitable Western ep, esp since the Western idiom is so much about community formation.
